Why are people so obsessed with 60fps these days? It's like a few video games companies drilled it as if it was some kind of achievement that had never been done prior to 2011 or whatever and now everyone seems to make it out as if 60 is the ultimate benchmark.

Artificially forcing 60FPS is bad, sure. But you can always animate at 60FPS and shoot movies at 60FPS. Animating at 60FPS is going to be a really big deal, but I don't see much problems with shooting movies at 60FPS

60fps makes shit look more "real", like you are watching something that has actually happened.
The effect is confusing, as you usually only see it when watching something "real", and you know that this isn't real.

No, it looks off because you're forcing something that wasn't 60fps to be 60fps. That scene wasn't animated in that framerate and it looks terrible when you force it into that framerate, just like when HDTVs have the feature that makes everything 60fps whether it was made that way or not.

No shit, its only been stated a dozen times in here that anime isn't, and probably never will be, made at 60 fps. Yet there are still people who think that forcing it like that is a good idea.

The points are consistent. Seeing an object in motion and watching film of that object in motion are not processed the same way by your brain. Which is why motion blur is animated into fast motion cuts. It's to simulate the iconic memory of the motion of a real-life object. You don't get the same kind of visual information from watching animation. If you animated it at a high frame rate as a substitution for that manual motion blur, you end up with "soap opera effect" surreal motion. Your brain
It's shouldn't be. The original source isn't. Not only that, but Thief & Cobbler is a prime example of animation at its highest levels. It's a clear example of why going above 24FPS is pointless. 60FPS would do nothing to improve its quality.

Use the 4chan extension (the arrow next to the post number) rather than doing it manually if it does not work, it will use the first frame for the search which is sometimes enough.

Because the number of frames in anime is unpleasantly low. Usually below the 24fps expected, with the same draw being used for several sequential frames. The result of this? Most anime is visibly choppy - which I certainly find visually unpleasant.
Yeah, but the fluidity is nice. I really want 60 fps, but you can't interpolate your way there from 24fps (nominally) and something like 14-20fps when you consider unique drawn frames.
I'm not saying I like that specific webm, but 24fps, especially in anime but generally extending to TV and film, looks awful. There are animation techniques that mask it (blur effects, motion lines and so on) but it's still glaringly visible when an object moves a significant distance between each frame. Panning and pivoting of camera angles makes it very apparent.
Overly high frame rates trip the uncanny valley.
Shooting at 60FPS doesn't magically make new frames get drawn by animators. Also, don't confuse 3:2 pulldown issues with framerate issues.
Look at the Thief and Cobbler animation and then try to say with a straight face that it looks bad because it's only 24fps.
I tried using SVP, and it looks good for some scenes, but others have this shitty wave effect that I can't get rid of.

I think we're misunderstanding one another a bit. My main point was, specifically, there are too few drawn frames. When handled well I don't mind it, but most of the time I find it mildly distracting, and in the more extreme cases it actually gives me a headache. That is the >only< point I'm making. Interpolation doesn't solve anything, and 3:2 pulldown is awful, although I'm in a PAL region so I only see 2:2.
Yeah, perhaps, you get that in CGI quite a bit. I think it comes from over-animating rapid movement. Fewer animated frames, more the brain compensates, which gives less uncanny valley. But yeah, valid point.

That's the issue, prior to 2007 or so 60fps was the standard in video games. Pretty much any game released on PC had 60 or unlocked fps. Then the trend of releasing multi plats came and the standard became poorly optimized console ports locked at 30fps, and that's still happening even today. It's understandable why people want that shit to stop.
I'm really hoping idtech6 actually does its job of running well and holding 60fps - idtech5 was an absolutely disaster, but the principle was good, hell it almost worked for Wolfenstein.

If everything was completely animated on ones, there would be zero anime every season because everybody would be out of business. Cuts don't always need to be animated on ones, either. And even if none of that were true, it still doesn't change the fact that 60FPS animation is fucking nothing. There's nothing in >>111086904 that would be better done in 60FPS. The only difference is that Richard Williams would have only finished a fraction of it before getting shit on by Fred Calvert.

Nope. Hiroyuki Okiura is just a godly animator. Look up the opening scene in the Cowboy Bebop movie. He did that as well and it wasn't rotoscoped either.
Late, but both have the same base story, only executed WILDLY differently. And both are worth a watch.

People do realize that most forms of animation meant for theaters and TV that adhere for the 24/25 fps standard for television are created with that framerate in mind, and that the techniques used to maintain fluidity despite that limitation makes it look positively jarring and ugly when the video is forced to 60 FPS? Look at all of that interpolation and lost detail, this isn't a video game where frame perfect input is necessary, what are you gaining by blending together ugly fake frames?
It looks choppy. Sure if the animation got above 10fps (you know there's heaps of repeated frames in anime right?) forcing 60fps would look better, but you're still dealing with really low frame rates and forcing it higher don't make it better.
The first change needs to be with the animation itself, also, that's a fucking movie, whole other ball park.

Some scene will not handle being forced to 60fps well, making the whole thing pointless, some parts will look better, others worse.

No it doesn't, because motion blur happens naturally to the eye and brain. It's not like watching a 60fps video on your computer or on TV magically gets rid of all the motion blur you'll experience.

That cut was done by Masahiro Ando, director of Sword of the Stranger. Hiroyuki Okiura and Tetsuya Nishio served as Animation Directors, both are pretty godly.
You can't appreciate details when they show up for one frame. You can care about more than one thing, there is nothing stopping you from caring about both animation quality and framerate. Thief & Cobbler would have definitely benefited from being 60fps, the only valid reason for it not to be is that it would cost too much money to make.

you can still animate it in 60 fps and add object motion blur, y'know? Effect will be the same, except it won't look like a slide-show.
Works well in 3D animation(video games), should also work here. But it's a pain to draw all the extra frames, that's why they keep the frames to a minimum.
Interpolated 60fps != natural 60fps
