That show has worse animation than a power point presentation, its just a bunch of head tilts and scene panning, there is no three dimensional movement or many characters traversing the screen at once while maintaining each one's definition and detail. This is not an example of superb animation.
Real good animation:
Ghost in the Shell movies
It's hard to imagine it hasn't been beaten by something more modern but my mind is drawing a blank.
You already know what people are going to say. So why? There's nothing really noteworthy about the animation there. Sure, it clearly has high production values and everything looks good, but there's very little actual animation, just look at the last bit. It's just a glorified pan of a still shot, you get to see her blink once.
Utena movie is pretty
I think KyoAni does TV series with best animation in terms of quality and quantity of frames, but I dislike characters' exaggerated movements, especially in Chuunibyou. They're shaking when talking, what the fuck.
I agree with that list, but it also sounds like you've never watched the monogatari series.
It's one thing to present a better example, it's another to talk out of your ass to support it.
>but the actual animation is lacking.
It's really not. There's plenty of great animation when there needs to be.
There's a few standout cuts amongst a lot of scenes with stills and talking heads.
Yes, because the show is about talking? What the hell do you want them to animate while talking? Monogatari still has fantastic animation when there's actually something to animate.
Yes, I know it has a lot of talking, but for example Hyouka was largely talking too and yet the animation was stunning throughout.
I like both of them, they're just two different styles of animation.
Hyouka is all about how alive the world is.
Background characters are always moving and doing their own thing, instead of everyone outside of the MCs being frozen still.
Shaft is a pro at being immensely cheap sometimes. Anyone remember Hidamari's first season and Bakem? I've never seen as many still shots and lazy design before. At least it's good shinbo gives original visuals, because in quality alone Shaft is one of the cheapest.
woah, now thats harsh, i totally just changed my mind.
Fuck off faggot
>all these retards saying TV anime
Give me a fucking break, 90s OVAs will probably never be matched in raw technical quality.
>we will never return to that magical age
>nothing will ever look as good as 0083 or Macross Plus
There's plenty to animate just when people are talking. Gestures, lips, eyes and such. Worst way to show people talking is to pan over a pretty much a still frame and characters having boring 'talking' animation that consists of two frames, mouth open mouth closed.
sword art online
Not the same guy but wouldn't you say it had at least above average animation for a TV show? They pulled off action scenes and flying shots without skimming too much on detail. Art it pretty crisp and good looking too. Manga doesn't even come close.
>Having only 20 seconds of decent animation every other episode means it's well animated
Monogatari much like all of SHAFT's works are far too inconsistent and generally look cheap as shit especially with the insane amount of panning and stills used in every episode and don't give me this bullshit that you can't animate characters talking since Hyouka was filled with nothing but and it's one of the most beautifully animated TV shows with past decade and that had no action to speak of. I love the Monogatari series but animation has never been the strong suit or even the appeal of it, it's the writing and the direction.
>SnK has really good animation, if maybe not among the best.
I find it funny how everyone hates on shaft but even when i watched Nisekoi (and I didn't know shaft made it) I knew it was made by shaft because they have an above average animation skill. Average being everything else.

FLCL (not TV anime though so not really comparable) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-gOnt6Nfds
I think he meant that most shows shit the bed when they go on for too long and end up with some questionable animation quality.
This show has been quality throughout and has had some top tier animation sequences even at episodes 126 and 131.
Oh yeah of course.
It's just that good animation is to be expected from movies and OVA's and is not nearly as impressive as when television anime manages to do it.
With movies animation quality is really only about preferences; other people value realistic movement and others like it more stylized, so I don't really think movies are even worth the mention.
With television anime it's easier to be objective about animation quality as most shows are fairly poorly animated.
that's something I wish people would understand when they call anime "cheap."
if you compare a quickly produced shonen to a Disney movie of course will look bad comparison. but Disney gives her animators millions of dollars in three years, it's not uncommon for an Japanese studio to finish a TV episode out within hours of airtime.
At least the Japanese don't resort to using flash.
This is the gif that made me watch the show. I wasn't disappointed.
>At least the Japanese don't resort to using flash.
They do. Flash is just a tool, it's up to the creator how you use it. There's plenty of lazy animators who use tweens but there are also ones that actually use some effort, both western and eastern.
Budget seems to be hit or miss for some TV shows. I wonder how much better animation we would've seen from otherwise mediocre studios in a dream scenario where they have all the dosh they need.
>I knew it was made by shaft because they have an above average animation skill.
What's the subtext here?
I saw a gif of some guy getting beat up by a creature in a rain coat in a room full of desks that was all BW and one constantly changing colour. I thought, 'that looks interesting. I should watch that.' So I watched that.
Admittedly I haven't watched a whole lot of anime, but the ones that had the most catchy animation (or at least particular sequences) include:
>Disappearance of Haruhi
>Rozen Maiden (First two seasons, not 2013)
>PreCure and YYH aren't as good and don't even come close when we're talking sakuga.
Please refrain from talking out your ass
Didn't like the fact that one character was 100% CGI. Didn't like it that a very lengthy and important fight scene was 100% CGI.
Just because it looks hand drawn doesn't mean that it moves like it.
>i will badmouth monogatari cause i think it's cool
seriously dude. watch it. Bake was a bit short on animation, and the dvd's mostly fixed that. The rest of the series however was not. Perhaps you should watch them and see for yourself.
that said you're right, those anime all have solid animation.
>all of those are movies
Pretty much anything KyoAni has god-tier animation.
SHAFT has good direction and replaces the need for animation all together and they can make some good shit when they want (like Rebellion) but I'd not say they're good animators from a technical standpoint.
>When there's actually something to animate
When you're shows are cash cows and 90% slideshows, it's pretty easy to dedicate a big portion of the budget to one 2 minute scene.
Fate/Zero from what I've seen. Shit looks gorgeous. And from the PV's I've seen on the new Fate/Stay Night, looks like that's gonna step it up a notch. Ufotable are pretty damn good at what they do
>Black Hanekawa will never press her electric tits against your back
YZQ was so excellent, those fighting scenes made me diamonds.
Bake was the start of this, meaning before they had a cash cow(not like this matters anyway since their budget is simply whatever Aniplex gives them) and it still has quite a few sakuga scenes.
None of that looks as well animated as things like Gon vs Hisoka or even his confrontation with Pitou.
Won't even compare it to Kurapika vs Uvogin, Netero vs Meruem and Gon vs Pitou.
and even besides all that, PreCure doesn't have consistent animation. It can get pretty fucking bad and not rarely too.
And they put it where it counted, I don't care about QUALITY when they're just talking
He's not. All you're doing is selecting key episode and ignoring the rest which anyone can fucking do.
There is more where this came from.
5 seconds of good animation per episode would still be beyond average compared to most other TV anime.
Some of the performances were top-notch
Don't have any webms sadly
Except it does. It's animation has always been above-average to great, despite a handful of scenes throughout the whole show.
PreCure's animation can get much worse.
That looks like shit.
>There were only five seconds of outstanding animation for each episode.
>I'll call him out for trolling/baiting, that'll sure show him
Come on anon.
SnK had it's moments but everything else was pretty crap, it's like saying Naruto has good animation because a couple fights were decent.
There are a lot better Production I.G. shows animation-wise, Gargantia comes to mind.
Well flip the two around then and the analogy works again.
A quick scroll through the thread and I've found a handful of more consistent and better animated shows
>despite a handful of scenes throughout the whole show
Try reading it properly next time. Also, a few badly animated scenes can't stop a 148 episode show from being called consistent with it's animation quality.
But that's what you did. The post you replied to was just me calling you out on that.
It's an example of what happens when you give the animator too much freedoms. It is not consistent with the rest of the episode. I understand that the nature of Kanada style directing allows animators to have artistic freedom but this scene takes it too far.
As a stand alone animation it's fine, still nothing to write home about, but in the context of the series it's an absolute failure.
That animation is in line with Yamashita's style also Naruto has always had guest animator who take over for the show by adding their own style to it.
>Kanada style directing
Except that's not what it is newshit
>It's an example of what happens when you give the animator too much freedoms
What? That's how Yamashita animates, every guest animation director from Naruto has never been in line with the series>>113208504 and Pierrot always let do go free-reign with their style. The episode was praised by veteran animators for its fludity and style and it was hated by retarded fanbois and idiots who don't know shit about animation.
If it kept with the style of the show it would have looked worse.
But I did provide examples. Go watch the moments I listed.
And I just realised providing examples doesn't help since it's nitpicking anyway.
My head hurts, fuck this.
Why? Just ask for shows with good animation because that's what the threads end up being anyway.
SAO was pretty good animation wise.
It did have good moments but there was a lot of QUALITY as well.
That's exactly what it is. Kanada was the one who started the whole "hey lets allow the animators some freedoms instead of aiming for a homogeneous look"
Yamashita did the whole scene all by himself with flash. Everything from key's to tweens to coloring and inking, which is why the result is not on par with the rest of the show.
That's too much freedom and liberties for most animators to have. The visuals look nothing like the rest of the show because of it.
Compare that scene to any other scene by him and you understand what I mean. It's not up to par.
Does anyone know what the average budget of a kyo ani anime is?
>Everything from key's to tweens to coloring and inking, which is why the result is not on par with the rest of the show.
That scene isn't on par with the rest of the show or even the episode.
Too bad, I don't spend time making webms
well, everyone gets payed literally nothing.
Voice actors probably make as much as a software company manager, and the artists and directors even less.
but they buy the production and merchandise rights first before putting the thing into production and thats a whole different animal.
It still seems like I'm the only person who thinks that the sounds in YQ were absolute garbage.
The special effects drowned both music and dialogue. The static sound in the explosions, reminiscent of the kind that you get when your audio levels peak like shit, was terrible. There's a difference between being LOUD and being impactful.
Ehhh. I think you may be talking more about the atmosphere and visuals. There were a lot of standard shots and some outright stupid shit like the walking in circles while they talked bit.
All I ever get from these threads is that people think a bit of sakuga makes up for 25 minutes of still frames and that if it isn't an action scene, it doesn't count as animation. That, or they make unfair comparisons between movies, OVAs, short TV series and long TV series.
All i ever get from these threads is that KyoAni's show have the best animation and that some anons thinks Shaft can animate.
Also that one anon saying 'AoT has the best animation' and people falling for the bait.
>Dr. Frankenstein using a Frankensteiner
Scott Steiner's waifu confirmed
>Pretends to know shit about animation
You fucked up, anon.
