Why did she hold his nose when they kissed? Is this a german custom?
She implied Shinji was an inexperienced kisser, and couldnt hold his breath long enough for long makeout sessions. In reality, people breath through their nose when making out for a long time, but we're talking about anime logic here. So, him being unable to hold his breath for a prolonged period of time confirmed her idea that he's inexperienced as a man regarding a sexual situation.
Are you paying attention to the what the characters are saying at all?
It's because the breathing from his nose annoyed her.
This guy gets it.
>I don't remember the scene
Why have I heard this comment more than once? It's a pretty major event for their development, and even more so for Asuka's personal development. How is it so forgettable to some people?
mfw when anon actually goes out and does this
I don't know about all of you but I think Asuka is totally justified here. It feels weird having somebody breathing all over your upper lip.
You should always inhale before a kiss and hold it.
gendo is such a goddamn tragic character. he dedicated his whole life to yui and shinji but hurt them both beyond all repair in the process. he was so sure it would all work in the end. fucking hell, gendo is the saddest character of them all.
to create emotional distance and keep herself 'in charge' of the situation in some way
the best part about that is that it's 100% a shinji thing to do. i like to think that gendo represents what shinji would become if he hadn't worked out his problems with human interaction in EoE
Shinji will die. But his soul will choose to go back in time, the time when he was happiest, and he will be at season 1 first episode. Rei who loves Shinji wants to be with him too and wants to be in a time when Shinji'd love her, but since he already loves Asuka she'll go back in time before Shinji is born, and become his mother.
>You will never get a hate kissu from Asuka
Aside from the reason Asuka gave, it's also a way of showing her personality. She wants to assert her dominance over Shinji. When she wanted to kiss him, she probably felt a little uncomfortable at the thought, and wanted to find something to blame/criticize him for, and thus decided to scold him about not being able to hold his breath. That would make her more comfortable again and feel justified in going in for the kiss.
Sorry my wording sucks.
>If he hadn't worked out his problems with human interaction
Sure thing buddy
The idea of revealing something genuine of yourself to another person terrifies her, it was a way to couch it in theatrics and a show of dominance, to try to deny the vulnerable position she was putting herself in.
he needed to know he was capable of hurting people. if he was still in third impact, human suffering wouldn't exist. shinji embraced the fact that he could hurt people as well as love people whereas gendo ran away from it, sending shinji away and proceeding to hurt him in ways he could never fully understand while thinking "don't worry third impact will fix"
>HIRR DURR LOOK AT ME IM BEING AN AUTOSTIC SHIT AGAIN MUM!!! :DD
He still had a bit leftover anger from before instrumentality, so Shinji just opening up to someone he's scared and ultimately intimidated by just doesn't make a lot of sense. Which is why I think he breaks down once she started being nice to him at the very end. It's a mixture of shock and relief that she accepted him.
In the anime Asuka CLEARLY states that she doesn't want Shinji breathing on her. That it. That's why she pinches his nose.
Don't any of you pay attention?
What what does breathing on her REPRESENT anon?
Perhaps her mother used to breathe on after she went crazy?
Maybe while she was being raped by someone she was breathed on. Maybe that person was Gendo and Shinji reminded her of him, and that's why the connection was made.
The nose often represents the spiritual entrance to the human body's spirit. By clamping down on Shinji's nose, Asuka was attempting to assert control over Shinji's spirit while cordoning off access to everyone else. The nose can also be interpreted as a phallic object, and indeed Asuka's actions can be viewed as her unconscious desire for exclusive contact with Shinji's penis.
Make that 1000 fanwanks.
She's insecure in her affection towards Shinji, so she plays off the kissing as a minor whim, even going as far as to say that Shinji's breath is disgusting. In reality, she's unsure of how to connect with Shinji without forcing herself onto him. She just wants companionship; Kaji wasn't there, so Shinji is the only choice.
However, this is only true for the anime. In 3.0 + 1.0 - 2.0 / 0, it turns out that Shinji has unsightly, protruding nose hairs, and she simply doesn't want them brushing against her. The nose hairs themselves represent Anno's poor hygiene, essentially reflecting his attitude towards NGE and life in general.
She's not gonna hold together at this rate. We're taking on baseless speculation in the "what the fuck did I just watch" room.
It's a German custom. Normally you'd swap shit, but since they couldn't do that at the moment, they swapped air instead.
Source: My great grandparents were all Germans. I know what I'm talking about.
In Japanese fiction, epistaxis is a common indicator of sexual arousal among prepubescent males. Given the virginal nature of both characters, and Asuka's allegedly aloof attitude towards Shinji, the pinching of a partner's nose could be understood as a message to not get any wise ideas from what may otherwise be an innocuous exchange of kisses.
In Ezekiel 16:12, the piercing of the nose symbolized the consummation and longevity of a traditional Christian marriage. While the verse in question refers to an actual metal nose piercing, the physical act of pinching another's nose could just as well be recognized as a preliminary rite before proceeding into a formal, declared relationship.
you're approaching MC levels of density there
The symbolism here is that to Shinji, love is like strangulation.
When he kissed Asuka, he wasn't allowed to breathe, and nearly suffocated trying to continue kissing her.
From that point onward he created an association between the two, and in trying to convey his confused feelings to Asuka, strangles her instead, in an attempt to return the kiss she originally gave him.
Literally no other franchise manages to spawn constant discussions like this, many years after the original work was released. This is part of what I love about NGE and the definitive proof that it's an actual work of art.
The best anime ever, without any doubt, is Evangelion. Not only is the plot amazing, it delivers important themes about society and has a lot of symbols about religion. Pisses me off that people don't understand how beautiful this anime is and I just want to punch them in the face.
Well they don't EQUAL art per se but they don't automatically exclude it from being art either. I was referring to the discussion it spawns to this day (seriously my previous post is neither long nor complicated), not the aspects you mentioned.
It should be called the German Custom, and done more often.
