Just finished watching Season 1 of Fate/stay night and don't want to wait till season 2.
Should I watch the original series and then Fate/Zero or just skip to Fate/Zero
Read the VN.
I don't care if you've never read a VN before. I don't care what anyone else wants to tell you about mollusks or how dense Shirou is or how Nasu working on the anime means it's the definitive version or whatever other bullshit they spew.
Read the VN. If you liked the ufotable anime you will not regret it.
1) Go through the VN
2) Watch F/SN 2006 (Keep in mind its quite old now and it's not amazing but its not a bad watch by any standards (i've seen a lot worse))
3) Watch Fate/Zero (By this point you should have enough of a grounding with the 06 anime and the VN to be able to watch it)
4) Play Fate/Extra
5) wait for the 2nd part of the new F/SN
6) Go through Hollow Ataraxia if you want
7) Dedicate a shrine in your room to your favorite girl/guy
8) Profit ???
You are now sufficiently Fated up, enjoy
This guy is fucking stupid.
1) Read the VN
2 or 3) Watch Fate/Zero
3 or 2) Watch Ufotable's UTW adaptation
?) Throw in Fate Hollow/ataraxia anywhere after the first VN
Avoid the DEEN works like the plague. They don't exist.
I just finished the Fate route. It drags like a motherfucker at times and Shirou is completely insufferable during the first half, but the payoff is worth it so truck on through.
It's less that I grew to like him and more that I tried to forget everything he did in the first half. Really, the whole scene where Saber finally gets over her issues makes every annoying moment worth it. Unnecessary, but worth it.
I don't know how I'm gonna deal with Saber not finding peace in subsequent routes.
No. No. Don't fucking do this, man.
I did the same. I saw all the fanwank about Fate and I read the VN, just to see what was all the noise about by myself. It was a bad idea.
> "Guys, Fate is shit. Like, really, really shit."
> hurr huur keep reading, UBW is better
> "UBW is slightly better but is still shit"
> "Fuck you guys, Heaven's Feel is garbage"
The VN is trash. Like, it has some good things, I can't deny that. But the writing is awful, characters are poorly done, the romance is terrible, and is mostly chuuni shit with badly narrated porn.
And you could bring up any flaw. Any. Even an insignificant one. And TMfags will defend it to no end, because they're insufferable white knights like that. They'll always tell you to keep reading even though they might know is garbage too. The only gratification you'll get is having confirmed is shit with your own eyes instead of listening to other people's opinions.
If you liked the UBW anime and are not enjoying the VN at all, just leave it at that and wait for the next season, or watch an actual good work from Type-MOON like Kara no Kyoukai. But don't keep reading a shitty VN just because delusional fans think it's a masterpiece or something.
You sure? Cause there was this big Fate thread on /v/ a little while back and the guy had basically the same opinions as you. Like, right down to the whole opinion of the routes.
I'm not like, trying to shut you up or anything, but if you were that guy I just don't think being this annoyed over it is healthy.
>or watch an actual good work from Type-MOON like Kara no Kyoukai
I'm not saying FSN is perfect but KnK isn't much better. Sure, the movies are pretty, but KnK is pretentious as all FUCK.
>an actual good work from Type-MOON like Kara no Kyoukai
>Kara no Kyoukai
It's as bad if not worse than Fate, don't delude yourself.
>but KnK is pretentious as all FUCK
That's what's kind of made me hesitant about looking into it. I'm not one to judge, but from what little I've read about the story and characters, I do get a bit of a"pretentious" feeling from it.
The movies are at least on my backlog.
One question guys:
Near the end of Fate/Zero when Iskandar is fighting Gil using Ionian Hetairoi, you can see the individual soldiers dying and "disappearing" when the reality marble collapses as a result of Enuma Elish.
Now, since Gil seems to hate "wasting" his treasures when he uses Gate of Babylon it implies that there's a finite amount. So does that mean that Iskandar's army is also finite?
tl;dr: Did Iskandar lose his followers permanently after the fight with Gilgamesh or do they just respawn the next time he's summoned in a Grail War.
I don't know if it would matter regardless, because servants are generally summoned in their prime, so there'd be a bit of a reset.
On the topic of Gil losing his weapons, he has a phantasm which allows him to collect them back in the Gate again.
>tl;dr: Did Iskandar lose his followers permanently after the fight with Gilgamesh or do they just respawn the next time he's summoned in a Grail War.
They got kicked back to the Throne of Heroes.
So you are telling me Nero's NicoNico stream is pretentious?
I read/played the VN recently, just finished Fate route
I hope UBW is better because for the most part enemies were pushovers.
And the beginning was way too slow.
So far Toshaka seems like the best girl but Saber is pretty nice.
My biggest complaint was how randomly they added the threesome which in theory was super fucking hot but ended up cringey as fuck
>her pussy so tight my dick like the sword in the stone
I couldn't stop laughing my ass off.
That about sums up the Fate route. it's an introductory course to what's to come.
Also the sex scenes are hilarious, no doubt. That's really the blame of the translators though; fucking high school kid trying to translate erotica typically isn't going to go well.
Seriously, what the hell is he wearing? It's just fucking sleeves tied together over the chest. Stop being such a goddamn chuuni and wear a fucking jacket or a vest like a normal person.
>>her pussy so tight my dick like the sword in the stone
They actually said that? I played that scene 2 days ago and don't remember.
Either way, it's erotic literature. It's cringey as fuck 99% of the time.
It really is "okay", but the climax under the church was a damn good one, in my opinion.
I love that bitersweet ending, too. Making Seiba give up her conviction for teenaged jap dick would be a disservice to the character.
So how come Caliburn can kill Berserker 5 times over whereas Excalibur, possibly the most famous sword of all time, can't get through his skin very well?
I'm not sure Jacques Cousteau's narration made for very good H-scenes but that may just be me. I mostly enjoyed the art and ignored the dialogue.
He didn't want Fate to be an eroge in the first place. Hell he made lots of concessions to fit the market at the time. He switched Saber's gender, and made lots of changes with the initial story. I think that's partially why Fate is so underwhelming, there were a lot of essentially executive changes that Nasu had already accommodated to with UBW and HF.
>So how come Caliburn can kill Berserker 5 times over whereas Excalibur, possibly the most famous sword of all time, can't get through his skin very well?
A literal miracle. Berserker's death scene in Fate was some of the biggest bullshit in the novel.
F/SN was written to be an eroge from the start as one of Takeuchi's ideas. The original draft which he wrote in college (Fate/Prototype) was unfit for the premise and was generally shit.
It wasn't Nasu's original idea. Fate originally had just regular King Arthur. A lot of the concepts sound pretty dumb when you look into it, but at the same time, he came up with it in high school or something.
>It's beyond shit and I'm thankful for the changes
Tell me more.
Fate route is very straight forward. There's not a lot of twists, you can probably make it through without a single bad end even if you don't consult the flowchart, just by using your common sense. As a result, people are usually underwhelmed by the route as a whole. The world building seems solid, the characters are great, but everything happens too predictably.
UBW is where curve balls start getting thrown at you. There's twists, betrayals, and revelations. You will probably get a couple bad endings, and it also requires you to manage your character relationships somewhat, whereas in Fate they might as well not even bother giving out Saber points since the only way you'll fail that flag check is if you really hate Saber (which no one does) or are trying to get that bad end deliberately.
And HF is grueling. The last few days of it redeem the whole route for some people, enough that HF is called the best route by quite a few fans of F/SN, but even they will admit it's very slow before the climax. Also you will probably die a lot. There's a lot of character flag checks you can fuck up if you're not paying attention to who you spent time with, so you'll probably be consulting the flowchart heavily for this route.
Ayaka is literally less interesting than a doormat and has a harem of fuckbois wanting her plain pussy even though two of them are known for raping women but are fighting fairly over her.
Just gimme some bullet points I don't wanna read it.
Gil's armor is superb though.
As someone who's only watched F/Z out all the type-moon works I can confirm you absolutely do not need extra context to understand the story. There might be more closure if you know what happened next, but it honestly doesn't matter. The ending isn't the important part of F/Z.
King Arthur being a girl is iconic, but at the same time, do you think it was well executed?
Generally the romance in the Fate route isn't considered all that well done; the whole "you're a girl" Saber stuff was basically inserted by Nasu to remind that it's okay to fuck Saber even though the legend had her being a guy. And in UBW and HF, it's practically a non-factor. You could have a male Arthur in both and nothing would really change.
>I can confirm you absolutely do not need extra context to understand the story
The thing is, you don't even realize how much stuff you don't understand. It happens every time somebody who only watches Zero tries to get into F/SN. The shock of it, how much you misunderstand or didn't even realize what was being talked about because the names and concepts just washed over your head.
And this is the first couple of episodes alone I'm talking about.
>do you think it was well executed?
Well enough. That is, I think Saber, her story, motivations, and her eventual character growth was pretty damn good, especially her renouncing the grail.
Shirou's side of the equation was fucking awful for most of it, he came off as dangerously stupid and embarassingly sexist and disrespectful.
You could have a male arthur, but it wouldn't have been nearly as memorable.
I don't see why. It's pretty straight forward what a servant is, who magic works, what factions there are ect. You might be overestimating the originality of Nasu's system and world. I was never presented with a concept that appeared inconsistent or overly complex.
>pulling a sword out your ass
F/SN has alot of that in the main story actually.
The VN is trash, but it did genuinely make fate zero more enjoyable for me. It's not the plot that's hard to understand but comparing the characters was fun. Kiritsugu would have been boring and edgy originally, instead it was fun to compare him to shirou and I was sadder when Natalie died since she would've been the perfect grandma. Same with seiba, I didnt like her in fsn but it was way more gutwrenching when she got ordered to destroy the grail cause you had seen for 70 hours how much it meant to her. If you're not willing to play 3 the VNs though the whole franchise is not worth touching in my opinion. Typemoon fags are too elitist for their own good though and fun to shitpost. So get into it so you can say you're not a secondary anymore and troll them. Also typemoon does have some cute characters like waver, iskandar, cu, dark sakura, gil, ciel, fsn caster, bazett, berserker and ilya, kirei. If you remember mou ikkai and other old fsn memes you owe it to yourself to go full circle.
>I was never presented with a concept that appeared inconsistent or overly complex.
Because F/Z doesn't touch on any of the complicated aspects of the setting. At all. It takes a very shallow and simple approach, making the story all about the intrigue and conflicts between masters and servants.
Did you not understand what I meant by you don't even know the stuff you don't know? It's because F/Z was written with a far narrower scope than F/SN was, omitting some of the juiciest bits of the lore. You never find out the truth about the Grail War or about the Einzberns and their catastrophic failure in the 3rd war that led to the disaster at the end of the 4th war, and eventually the 5th war as well.
You probably don't even remember the stuff that was never explained, like the Heaven's Feel or the Dress of Heaven, or the Third Magic.
This looks better to me actually, than unlimited hollywood. I know people some parts of the plot were butchered, but I'd rather have cool stuff like the rider skyscraper fight or archer vs berserker than the most boring adaptation of the most boring route. If you can watch gundam shit this animation isn't bad.
>Kirit gets told the truth of the grail by the grail itself
No he doesn't.
>And the other stuff doesn't really matter.
Sasuga secondary. That "other stuff" that they casually mentioned are major keystones to the setting that explain everything about what's happening, like the entire point of the Grail War and why it works the way it does.
I'm pretty sure they explain angry mabyu all the evil's of the world in the anime.
This is why you tmfags are fun to troll. The dress and the third magic don't matter. Nasulore is shit.
None of that precludes being able watch F/Z on it's own. Sure, there's other stuff in F/SN or whatever, but it has little bearing on Zero's immediate story.
I doesn't really matter to me why the Grail War has all the quirks it does, because it doesn't really matter to any of the characters. It doesn't matter to me what the history of Einzberns is, because it doesn't really matter to Zero.
>tfw Takeuchi and Nasu will die in your lifetime
>Fate will be gone forever
>I'm pretty sure they explain angry mabyu all the evil's of the world in the anime.
They don't. The long and short of it is the grail contacts Kiritsugu, says "dude let me kill everybody" and Kiritsugu says "wtf no" and lives the rest of his life wondering why the holy grail was a fully automated murder machine.
You should have watched Fate/Zero before Fate/Stay Night.
Or, fucking play the VN.
Well yeah, overcooking meat is a sin.
Red and juicy like a senseless slaughter is where it's at.
The VN is absolute garbage absolutely HOURS of meaningly dribble conversation and the fighting is absolutely retarded. most of these people that read the VN were 10 when they were so it was cool for them then. watch fate zero > vn. i went fate zero then fate stay night couldnt make it through the shit vn srs all the people that say VN have to be trolling
watch fate zero save yourself from watching some autistic novel for 1000 hours, the that is unless u got the spergs
im dead srs the VN sucked balls tell me how it was good at all. they chat non stop about nothing. the actual anime gets into the plot and has actual fighting scenes. if anything the vn ruins fate zero, you've been warned OP
