I'm only half way through this, and all I can think is, "What the fuck happened to anime???"
I'm scared of finishing this because of how good each episode gets. I'm terrified at how high this will set the bar by the time I finish.
Rose is good too, but that doesn't mean that Utena's bad. You're talking two completely different series, and I will make the justifiable argument that Utena's a better series.
Think about this: Ikuhara's appreciated as an anime genius, but SM and Utena are his only two series that aren't regarded as flops. That's pretty high-tier.
So? Ideon was Anno's basis for Evangelion, but that doesn't mean that Ideon's better than Evangelion; most people who have seen both series will still cede that one to Eva.
And the majority of anime aren't 3x3 worthy. 90% of every season isn't 3x3 worthy.
And I'd consider Oniisama e along with Utena as better than Rose (even though they were both influenced by the latter).
It was an influential anime, but influential doesn't necessarily mean "the best" (though that's not to say Rose is by any means bad).
3x3 are your favorite anime. Your favorite anime don't have to be critically appreciated at all.
My 3x3 gets constantly shit on because I actually stick to this rule.
Which rule? That they don't have to be critically appreciated? Of course they don't have to, but >>124229612 combined with >>124229868 seems to suggest that you think "better" means "more critically acclaimed," which is ridiculous.
Just remember that Juri will always love you tenderly from afar.
I never said that.
Also not me.
You need to learn reading comprehension.
>Utena's easily 3x3 material. In fact, I've seen far more shitty 3x3s without it than 3x3s with it.
You should put Utena on your 3x3 if you loved it. If it was one of 9 best anime you've ever watched not because it's 3x3 material.
>You need to learn reading comprehension.
That's my line. No one's trying to imply that you should put an anime you disliked on your 3x3 because of some standard for 3x3 material.
By saying "watch more anime," you're suggesting that anyone that's well-watched will have anime they enjoy more than Utena, which is simply untrue; Utena holds its own weight against the compilation of all anime before and after it.
>that's well-watched will have anime they enjoy more than Utena, which is simply untrue
Are you serious?
I can name at least 25 anime better than Utena.
Then name them. All 25, preferably with how they're objectively better than Utena.
The film's completely different than the anime. It's definitely worth your time to watch both.
>you're suggesting that anyone that's well-watched will have anime they enjoy more than Utena
That's usually the case, but I guess it couldn't always be true. How much anime have you seen?
>Utena holds its own weight against the compilation of all anime before and after it.
It's great, but it's not even my favorite anime that released in 1997.
>How much anime have you seen?
Enough that I don't keep count anymore
>It's great, but it's not even my favorite anime that released in 1997.
It's my favorite of '97, but to be fair '97 was a stacked year. Your answer could be Berserk or Oh My Goddess!, and you even had the second season of TWHE.
No, the burden of proof is on you to present why Utena doesn't hold its own weight. I've presented a valid argument that it holds its own weight that's backed by critical opinion; if you're going to make a statement like "at least 25 anime are better than X," the burden of proof's on you to list 25 anime.
>THERE ARE 25 WHOLE ANIMES BETTER THAN UTENA.
>Okay, name one.
>BUH BUH BURDEN OF PUHROOOOOOOF.
Do at least on some level realize how retarded you sound?
Go on MAL; there's a lot of critical opinions there.
Ranked #314; You said it was backed by critcial opinion.
There's 313 anime better than Utena.
Guess I'll be tipping my fedora and leaving now.
I've never watched Utena
>Enough that I don't keep count anymore
>It's my favorite of '97, but to be fair '97 was a stacked year.
End of Evangelion and Princess Mononoke also came out that year. I wouldn't consider anything you mentioned as good as Utena. I guess it's overall in my top 30, though, thinking about it.
I have no idea how many I've honestly watched. I know I've watched at least that many because I've been watching seasonally since '09-'10 (10-15*4*6=240-300), but I've seen all the ones we've been talking about as well. I'm not going to play internet tough guy and say "Oh yeah, over 500 for sure." I feel like I've watched at least 200 older series, but a lot of those series are 150ish episodes by themselves.
Wait till you see the movie OP. Only then will you know how truly shitty everything has become.
Anime is better in literally every way now.
Enjoy your blurry, overshaded dated-looking square aspect ratio trash with ultra simplistic stories or edgy gore ovas, nostalgiafags.
We didn't even get anything like mature storytelling until Paranoia Agent.
>what the fuck happened to anime?
Anime is fine. You're not going to get a masterpiece every season.
>I've watched 430
>but I haven't watched Utena
fucking what dude
in that case just watch it again, can't ever go wrong with returning to favorites.
I've always personally felt like Utena was a bit overrated, but it's a treat to watch every time. Never any episodes where it starts feeling like a slog to get through. That's what I love about Utena and MPD both, wish Ikehura could have pulled off the same thing in YKA.
lmao. Had myself a good laugh. I don't even like Utena that much, yet it's better than everything you just named. Please keep going.
Honestly the best title you named there is Code Geass and Haruhi. That's sad.
are we talking strictly about enjoyment out of the series or what
Money, that's what happenned.
They realized who are the real money makers: the otaku.
So now, almost every anime is the same fanservice shit, with the same 4 kinds of story, the same 4 characters and so on.
This got even worse with the economical crisis, now they don't only want money, they NEED to make money.
>Honestly the best title you named there is Code Geass and Haruhi. That's sad.
jesus am i getting baited or what
i'm really interested in what you think are the 24 better than utena. i've watched over 150 television shows while always trying to strive only to watch the best of the best, and i feel like the only tv i can give 10/10s to are texhnolyze, utena and tatami.
I just finished Utena recently and it's an unrivalled masterpiece. I used to think all talk about older anime was just nostalgiafagging
like Evangelionbut Utena truly is just that good.
Best of Ikehura's endings by a long shot
Nope. There's not even a contest here. Overall I wouldn't argue that Penguindrum is his best work, but it's definitely his best climax / ending.
