What is the first anime or manga that comes to mind when you hear the word
pretentious? Hardmode: No Evangelion
This. Add anything ABe to this list as well.
I don't know, man, Monogatari never really seemed to me like it was trying to be deep or anything. It felt more like the whole thing was an elaborate plot to make me feel like the foulest of pedophiles.
It always makes me laugh that people call a show based on puns and fanservice pretentious.
What is your idea of non-pretentious fun? Somebody farting into a microphone for 22 minutes?
My vote goes to the monogatari franchise. Absolutely anything from that towers head and shoulders above most of the rest in the pretentious stakes, followed probably by the SZS franchise.
>create Dystopian world
>in lieu of actual critiques of society, just quote a bunch of novelists and philosophers that justify the absurdities in your story
Psycho Pass is definitively pretentious. It's a dumb person's idea of an intellectual anime, like this guy >>124830746
Here lies the intellectually blunted anon who thinks he can critque a series because "it quoted smart people ergo bad", unable to understand the basic concepts they spell out in the first episode
I watched that a couple of weeks ago, expecting it to be the same kind of incoherent, pretentious garbage like Lain, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad. I regret avoiding it for so long.
Psycho Pass did nothing original. It didn't provide any unique insights, it just regurgitated established philosophy in absurd scenarios. You are only proving what a layman you are by considering it "intellectual".
>lain's classmate sudokus while connected to the wire
>lain asks best daddy to buy her a computer
>lain receives a computa and emails from classmate
>lain and her gfs go to the bar
>lain encounters the crazy man with the gun
>lain understands that killing anybody won't matter because it will put him behind bars
>lain finds out child's game which basically kills children and is being distributed by the Knights
>lain tracks down the Knights and the assassin men kill them
>lain gets 2deep and becomes a Knight herself
>lain erases herself from reality because if no one remembers her, she never existed
What's wrong guys?
Did it really cut you deep when you were called a nerd and bullied in school, but you weren't actually intelligent?
>thinks Psycho Pass is hard to understand
>thinks he's smart for being able to follow an anime written by a light novelist
It figures pretentious teenagers like pretentious anime.
I post in Monogatari threads constantly, and it's obvious you don't. They are literally nothing but people arguing over which girl is best or which girl is shit. The closest you get to people actually having an argument with substance is when they talk about character arcs.
Not hard to understand for me, simply incredibly evident it's actually substantial and novel compared to the vast majority of anime, which is mindless garbage, shit that people like you enjoy and rely upon to distract you from the vacuousness of your lives.
It's still far inferior to any decent book, but 90% of anime is so fucking shit that it still stands out among the rest.
>this anime appeals to my pretentious fantasy of being an intellectual so that means it's deep and amazing
Man are you going to be disappointed if you ever find out the intellectual world doesn't care how many "deep" anime you've watched, but I suppose that would require you to leave your meticulously crafted bubble of self-delusion, huh?
Do you even know what pretentious means?
>what?! A socially acceptable anime that isn't vapid?
>IT'S SHIT AHHHH PRETENTIOUS GARBAGE
>I don't know why does a large part of /a/ get htat idea
Literally just like Fate/Zero
There is nothing hiveminders fear more than their only refuge in life being taken from them
It's funny you mention projection, cause that's what you did just now, projecting your insecurity of being perceived as intelligent onto me. That's pretty much the reason kids like you latch onto pretentious anime, it's cause you desperately want to be taken seriously but don't have the wherewithal to go through academia to get the recognition you crave. So you just lower the bar for intellectualism until you can step over it without tripping. Who needs the rigors of formal education when you can just get intellectual kudos by watching anime, am I right?
It's easy to pretend you're some kind of genius when you make sure nothing you read or watch challenges your intellect. You're like a child who thinks he's the strongest kid on the playground because he only fights toddlers.
There's a lot of us who enjoy watching the show, doesn't mean we think it's a masterpiece just because we watch it. 99% of the time it's just people bickering over who they think is best girl
(the answer is monkey).
I've only seen the first season, but I don't really feel compelled to watch anything more of the series.
>Projecting your own inferiority upon others
That's real cute kiddo. I have a graduate degree and made 6 figures last year.
But you won't believe that because you can't conceptualize anyone who isn't a failure at life like yourself using 4chan
>YOU CAN'T EVEN GO TO COLLEGE
>I did though
>YOU'RE SO INSECURE
This is why there's no point arguing with double digit IQers.
Ok anon you won the argument! God knows you need it to give your life meaning and purpose.
Lain, I guess? It's amazing, but I think it fits.
>still harping about how smart he is for watching anime
That's some chip on your shoulder. Here's a protip: maybe don't flip out every time a person says you're not smart, and they won't think you're trying so hard to prove them wrong.
Was this an argument? I thought you were just desperately trying to show me how smart you were. Because you're totally not insecure and don't care how I or anyone else perceives your intellect (or lack thereof, in this case).
Autists most learn through hard fact and number, not visuals. They actually learn through visuals less so than other people. Why do you think they're so bad and remembering faces, yet so good at telling you exactly when every major event took place in some war?
Also, it's worth noting that every light novel/visual novel NEEDS cute girls and fanservice on the cover, or it won't sell.
>look at how edgy we are!
>we're so edgy and cool we can just totally scrap the plot
pretentious: characterized by assumption of dignity or importance, especially when exaggerated or undeserved:
Why is it you faggots don't know what autism is? I understand it gets abused as a buzzword, but you're legitimately trying to argue something kind of point and still don't know what it means.
not sure about "pretentious" because they're all pretentious to an extent but in terms of being "overly preachy" ..
jinrui wa suitai shimashita
psychopass (esp. 2nd season)
and magical index (i.e. touma's endless ranting about doing the right thing)
all come to mind.
Ergo Proxy and Aku no Hana. The AnH manga straddled the line pretty well where it came off as more humorous in the sort of way you'd find children trying to look adult to be amusing while still being interesting. The anime went too far and become a complete joke.
>Wah there's something unconventional about this series so it must be trying too hard to impress people dumber than me
Everyone posting in this thread or any other like it unironically are legitimate bakas
