Is it alright to let your cat go outside as long as they are supervised the whole time?
My cat always begs to go outside and I let him out at least once a day, but never let him be by himself.
He's caught a few big grasshoppers while outside, but I always make him put them down. Would it be fine for him to eat most bugs? Like cicadas and grasshoppers if he catches them?

>Is it alright to let your cat go outside as long as they are supervised the whole time?
The indoor/outdoot argument is primarily about people who just let their cats run around unattended to do whatever the fuck they want. There is nothing wrong with letting your cat out as long as it's supervised.

As for the bugs, I'd be wary of that stuff on account of parasites and the like.
>>
If the cat is confined to an area, it should be okay. Like the person above said, outdoor cat hate comes from people letting it roam freely without any kind of real limit.

Also, pesticides. Be wary of letting your cat actually eat any bugs. Catching is fine.

I want a small, low maintenance pet that could be ok in a studio apartment. Something like a snake or insect that won't mind me holding it for about 5-10 minutes once in a while.

I also want it to have a long, somewhat short (like no bigger than a foot and a half tall) cage that I can fit on top of a counter or shelf as a kind of display.

Are there any creatures that would fit something like this? I'm open to other suggestions, but I don't have the time for a mammal if something that needs interaction on my part.

A week ago I adopted an about 2-month-old stray puppy my boss found under his truck. She has mange and I've already taken her to the vet. I am washing her daily and giving her medicine. It seems like it has seen some shit, always trying to be alone and having a sad look in its eyes. When I've tried to bond with it, it seems to like it and has cried if I left her side.

>Basically I wanna know if this can be something permanent or will she chill out soon and what can I do to help her feel better?

How long have you had her?

sounds like separation anxiety. it's normal at that age. plus if she has been abused it's going to take some extra work to get her adjusted but it's something that will become more manageable over time. do you have any pics of her? she sounds adorable
>>
>>2209539

Looks like you're going to have to be patient with her. Start small, like giving her tiny bits of treats when she comes when you call, and praise her for letting you touch her.

You're also going to want to teach her that when you leave, she can't bring you back by crying. Don't give in, no matter how pitiful she gets. She has to learn that when you leave, you'll still be back.

Try giving her something like a puzzle toy (has to work at it to get a treat) when you're gone...

Someone on Ebay is selling a stuffed 'golden retriever' mount. What does /an/ think of this?

How do you guys feel about people getting their pets stuffed once they die?
I kind of like the idea of being able to preserve the pet, making it look like it's still alive. But I'll admit, i'd probably feel pretty sad from time to time knowing that my own pet has passed on. But in general, I personally admire the art of good taxidermy.

I mean I guess there's no inherent issue with it, but it's nothing I'd ever do, and I think people who do it are a little creepy, but that's me.

Like imagine raising and growing up with a dog, looking into its eyes while your chilling on the couch, petting it, playing with it, all that stuff, and then after it dies, you get to look at the cold, lifeless hide from its corpse stretched over a canvas every day. Like, after all these years, you've bonded with the dog and gotten to know all the little odd physiological quirks it has, a taxidermy job...

So, I was sitting outside smoking when a fox came up to me, step by step he came closer (rapidly) and I (forcefully) shushed him away thinking there is something wrong here.

There was no visual scab (missing fur) on the fox or anything but I felt danger...

Was this just an curious fox or is there something that draws sick foxes to people? Like foxes with rabies FROM water?

Where's does the stereotype of witches having cats come from? I like dogs.
9 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>2209223
I imagine cats have probably been historically linked with witches because they were thought to be demonic.

Other animals that Christians believed to be evil include snakes, bats, and owls.

"Evil" animals were sometimes killed in times of sickness and plagues, which was ironically counterproductive because all these animals happen to prey upon disease-causing vermin.

Every now and then, cats also have a "crazy time," where they'll whip around and run about for no reason...
Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>
There was also the belief that witches could transform into a cat 9 times before permanently being stuck as a cat. Likely where the "cats have 9 lives" thing originated.
>>
>>2209594
No, cats having nine lives originated from the same place that cats always landing on their feet did.

This is because cats have a very flexible spine, they can twist their entire bodies around in mid air, greatly increasing their chances of landing on their feet. Which greatly increases their chances of surviving a fall from a great height.

It's a lot easier to recover from a broken leg than it is to recover from a broken spine.

It's also really awesome to watch in slow motion.

Title says it all. Can't get him to eat anything. He did eat a little piece of tuba and some pumpkin baby food earlier, now he's refusing anything.

Went to the vet Saturday, got a full work-up. Ver said it may be kidney failure but he's too dehydrated to tell (he was eating less and less since last Wednesday) so he wants him to come back every 3 or 4 days for 2 weeks for fluids. Also on his X-ray it looked like he had something (vet said maybe a piece if bone because of it's opacity) in his colon but it had already travelled all the way through everything else and vet said he should pass it. He hasn't pooped yet though.

I'm worried about liver damage at this point and I don't like forcing him to eat. He'll sniff at food but won't eat it.

I don't know what else to try and any suggestions would help. Tried tuna/tuna juice, Friskies salmon, turkey vegetable baby food, pumpkin baby food, I And Love And You chicken flavor pâté, and his favorite treat vanilla pudding. Can't get him to really eat any of these, he'll lick a little and then get irritated.

Pic is Horatio in better days. Sorry bad phone camera.

Have you considered switching from his diet of brass instruments to something like woodwind?
>>
OP here he does have a vet appt tomorrow.
>>
Don't feed him anything starchy, salty or sugary. That's probably why he might have kidney failure.
Give him boiled chicken and that's it. Also, you can give your cat sub-q fluids at home. Just have the vet show you how.

Realistically, who high are the chances of a dog getting Parvo or something else from going outside without all their shots?
It seems like you can either have a healthy, normal puppy from proper socialization at a young age, or keep him locked inside until fully vaccinated and miss that critical window.
What do?
15 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
If you get your pup from a reputable breeder then the pup will have been properly socalized before you get it. Breeders actually have people come to their house to play with puppies.
>>
>>2209156
I think it may also boil down to whether or not it's work the risk. It can easily be fatal and often is, and even if it makes it its still suffering. Sixteen weeks is not very old at all. If we were talking months then yeah I can see the hesitation. Your dog will not be ruined for life if you wait. If it has at least started the shots then I might be more flexible, but not with other puppies.
You dont have to keep it locked inside. It can enjoy your yard and a walk. Most dogs that get parvo is from the place...

So what about taking it hiking on trails or visiting friends with other dogs? My friends dogs are all vaccinated. I want to socialize with them and they all bring their dogs on the hiking trails together. It's a great way to socialize and get exercise.

Do you know the differnce between propaganda and truth?

For instance, zoo keepers can train them to voluntarily open their mouths so they can work on their teeth without putting up a fuss (zoo keeper stands behind hefty metal gate when doing this though). However, and it's a big however, they are extremely territorial and will kill you dead real bad if you're in their territory or they decide you're a threat to themselves or their young or they decide they don't...

Recently had a bad problem with fleas in my house as well. As long as your animal is treated, I found that a carpet powder called "Enforcer Flea Powder" worked well...
Spread all throughout my house's carpet, let it sit for several hours, washed and dried my bedding... then vacuum it up. Also, vacuum Daily for about a week afterwards to get any stragglers.
>>
>>2208752
Was considering going out and getting something like this today. They're definitely in my carpet considering I feel them jumping on my legs as I type this.

That particular brand is pretty effective... doesn't smell too bad either like most others. Believe me, I know what you're goin through... these little faggots are annoying.
Like I said, do 1 or maybe 2 total carpet coverages with the powder, vacuum it up a few hours later and continue to vacuum for a week.

Many animals have been extinguished by humans during history: some due to hunting for food, their skins or other reasons. With humans being conscious of what "biodiversity" is and without it. Also by destruction of habitats and the unstoppable idea of making us a comfy spot.

But there's a group of people, where I am included, that is somehow different: animal lovers and keepers, /herp/.to be exact.

I'm not talking just about illegal hunting and black market. You can easily export legally a box full of wild caught animals from almost any african...

I understand that the ecosystem depends on some species, but not necessarily others. I also don't think it's inherently immoral to drive a species to extinction through a loss of habitat, though if you're deliberately killing them outright that's a different story. It's important to consider the full picture, that humans can/will flourish more with a larger "habitat", and it seems to come down...

Let's face reality here.

Tarantula extracting from Chile it's done in the dessert. Nothing has changed in the dessert, no deforestation, no polution, it's just the pet trade that's reducing the tarantula population.

The introduction of rare especies plus the irrational fear of said animals, will extinct them.

It's not your love of animals the problem, it's the mentality that everything should have a price.

And you should be able to buy everything you have the money for.

98 KB,
I have an akita and I took care of him since he was a puppy (he's 3 now)
by the time he was 2, I left to do an exchange student program and stayed there for 1 year. when I came back, I thought my dog would go nuts when he saw me, but he just treated me just as if I was gone for work for 1 day, maybe even a bit colder.
that hurt me so bad. while I was gone I felt so guilty he could be feeling lonely (my parents were here taking care of him), and I would think of him all the time. but apparently he gave zero shits. it not only hurt but it also made me like him less....

I don't know, I have don't have pets but I've thought that those reunions that you see in YouTube are something special that they can consider lucky to have.

Maybe the dog bonded more with your parents, and that's just how it did go.

Maybe you're just not very likable, ever though about that?

well you should

You really fucking need to grow a pair if you need a dog to vindicate your existence.

If me or someone else was going to eat it then I'd club a bunch of them. Assuming they are breeding in proper numbers and are well established in whatever ecosystem they're inhabiting
>>
I'd go clubbing with a baby seal.
