I'm planning to pick up a pooch in the next few weeks but am having trouble deciding if I should get a male or female. I have had 2 male dogs in my life so far and 0 females, I have no frame of reference for a female dog except for a family friend's dog. I would be looking into a medium-large sized pooch.
In general they are more laid back and easy going, usually wanting to be near you versus running off. A lot has to do with nature and nurture though, so if you're getting an older dog without any previous history on it, it's a small gamble.
I'm getting a doggo soon, and I have a few questions for you dog lovers.
How bad is it to feed dogs cooked meat? I read briefly that it's not good for them to feed them sausages and stuff, among other things on a large list, but realistically, will it really harm them? If I were to feed him that stuff, it wouldn't be every day.
How do I teach a dog not to jump over a low fence when he grows up? I can put something up to make that impossible if necessary, but I'd rather not.
And finally, how hard is it to teach a dog not to bark? At this... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>2207055 Might as feed it raw meat. The problem with sausage and cured meats is the nitrates, salt, and other seasonings (garlic etc). But if you are willing to spend the money on FRESH meat you don't even need to cook it. By fresh I mean, meat that was bought or thawed (slow thaw in the fridge) the day of feeding. Stick to poultry and beef. Uncooked bones won't hurt the dog. Introduce little bits at first and increase incrementally.
>>2207069 I was thinking about feeding him the scraps off my plate or whatever sometimes. I'll be giving him proper raw meat as his main food most definitely. But yeah, I guess I won't be feeding him any sausages, thanks. I see other people feeding their dogs that shit all the time, hence the confusion.
>>2207055 As for the training, definitely read a book about dog training before you get the dog. You should know what you have to do before you have to actually do it. Hitting the dog with a newspaper won't help with barking; he'll just bark when you aren't home or able to hit him. He could also take it as you interacting with him when he barks, which would make barking a good thing for him. It would help to actually teach a bark command, so he knows he will only be rewarded when you give the command and not given... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I don't like the traditional environmentalists: - lots of woo - outdated ecological concepts such as the balance of nature - noble savage myths - sometimes misanthropic - overly pessimistic - anti-capitalistic Neither do I like the new ecomodernists: - scientism - overly (techno-)optimistic - contains hubris - not skeptical of capitalism - status quo bias
I managed to accidentally drop my frying pan today while cooking oil, it fell on my foot and my cat.
The cat has 1st degree burns and no hairloss. It is in a lot of pain however and it's left eye is partially swollen. In an hour the vet will be open and I will take him for an examination. Since the burning he has eaten, drunk, played with his ball and went outside and got back. I wasn't able to wash out the oil immediately or help him, since he bolted out of the window so he endured more pain than he had to. After I found him I gave him a bath with cold water... A friend of mine is giving away her dog and I immediately responded saying I would gladly take him in. Meanwhile she goes behind my back and asks another family if they want it. The family is seeing the dog tomorrow while I have been turned away as a last resort.
Should it or should it not be the other way around, or am I just being a selfish prick?
I have a 5 years old persian male cat living along a bengal of the same age. She always picks on him and he seems kind of depressed because of this. How can I make my persian male cat tougher so that he can defend himself from her?
>>2206403 Let him watch 300 but skip over the part where Leonidas throws the spear at Xerxes, then he'll think the movie is about the Persians kicking ass and winning. You could also build him armor or maybe tape some barbed wire to his collar or something to make him look more metal
>>2206337 Thanks, your right I think it is a female, possibly a wolf spider I find them all the time in the house this one just looked different then most other wolf spiders around here but maybe I have just been seeing males.
>>2206310 they might scratch you if they get scared while you're holding them, but in my experience they are not aggressive to humans. If the cat does get aggressive you as a human have an enormous advantage, a cat would not be able to harm you very easily. You'll be fine friend :3
Shit, meant to ask for anyone with pet corvid experiences to share them. I have been debating getting a hybrid raven which is legal where I live for about 5 years but birds are a huge commitment so I have been biding my time to learn and make sure its what I want.
I would warn you, they are very smart and social animals.
They will want to be with you all the time, they are loud, and about as intelligent as a toddler. Take this as seriously as you would adopting a child. At least a child will grow up eventually and leave the house.
my cat was hit by a car and has suffered a tail and bladder injury and is currently at the vet, if his bladder stops working i will have to put him down. Is there much chance of his bladder getting better? has anyone experienced a similar thing?
Something is happening to my precious dog Ginger. She tries to eat but keeps vomiting, she's drinking a lot of water and urinating frequently. I've recently gone through a lot of shit, and I have no money for treatment.
PLEASE GUYS! I NEED OPTIONS! I dont wanna loose her.
Do you guys think a gofund me could work or something.

So my idiot ex brother-in-law got a female puppy around four years ago when he already had two other female dogs. At first they all used not get along at all until he got one fixed then only two would continue too fight then after a while things calmed down but occasionally the puppy will try to "dominate" the other dog. She will wait until the other dog is in a vulnerable position and she'll try to attack her. Well he decided that he didn't want her anymore so he tried to get rid of her but I felt bad so I'm trying to take her in instead of taking her... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
