I used to have two dogs. One of them died of heart trouble. The other one has bad anxiety if he's home alone or in a room alone that causes him to freak out and wreck shit. He has literally broken out of our house before and he's only a small daushcund. I'd get another dog, but he (usually) hates other dogs. He would even get into scraps with our old dog from time to time (which ultimately caused his death). We tried anxiety meds, but they didn't really do much.
>>2194174 I'll consider that if things get too bad. I'll probably take him to the APL and kind of individually meet him with other dogs to see if he gets along with any of them. Was curious about any other potential options.

long story short, I picked up a 4 year old border collie (male, desexed) from a foster owner. they had him 4 months and rescued him from previous owner. I asked some questions, they didn't have a lot of answers other than the dog was in a sad situation previously.
So, the dog is very well behaved. Knows some commands, walks on a leash but needs to work on it a bit more.
The problem is he always seems scared. when I walk out to greet him, his head goes down. he wags his tail a little but it's as if he's scared of... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
My dog got bit by another dog. Its a very small wound and i wiped it off and cleaned it with alcohol. Is there anything else i can do? I was thinking of putting ointment but i think he will just lick it off. Any advice would be appreciated.
I don't care about breeds. Most shelter dogs are not pure anyway. I really like Staffy mixes but I don't mind what breed a dog is, just if it fits me.
I want a Greyhound for my first dog though. I heard they're good for apartment dwellers and I've been researching them heavily these past few years. I don't care about breeds but I want to make sure I'm good with dogs before I get any random one.
But seriously predatory wildlife is pretty boring in central europe. We apparently have a few poisonous animals like the false black widdow (apparently discovered 20 years ago) or the horned viper. But these are either increadibly uncommon or even, like in the case of the viper, in danger of extinction. Sometimes we get the... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
/an/ seems like just the right group of people that would like animal simulators. Which games do you like? Games where you play as realistic animals.
I'm a Wolfquest fan myself. I wish there was more to do but it's still fun running around killing animals. I heard they revamped the game but it's a mobile port. It seems like all the animal sims these days are mobile games... I'm surprised animal sims are not more popular. I guess they require too much research. I would love to see some VR animal sims in future years.

Check out The Isle and Saurian if you like dinosaurs. The former is going to be heading in more of a sci-fi direction with options for dinosaur only servers and the latter is going to be an accurate recreation of the Hell creek formation.
There's also Tyto ecology which is more of a ecosystem simulator.
The only systematic form of cruelty is when owners destory their greyhounds after they retire simply because they are no longer making money. Races in them I have no issue >Greyhounds are specifically bred to race >They love to run fast >The owners are under many obligations legally, morally, and financially to ensure the dogs are in the best possible health >Races increases popularlity of breed and love of them by spectators >The... nobody likes dog racing, they're just addicted to gambling and it's a legal option. Young dogs are the fastest so they're not bred to healthy. The owners of the dogs dump most of them on rescues organizations or into shelters as poorly socialized shitty pets, giving the breed a unnecessarily bad reputation.
>>2192680 Greyhounds are one of the oldest dog breeds and they were bred to hunt. Only now are they bred for racing. dogs are an unique animal, unlike the donkey or mule, dogs are seen as companions and protectors. To say that dogs need to earn their keep, especially through racing isn't really true anymore. I'm not against greyhound racing, but most race owners honestly don't give a shit about their Greyhounds.
>>2192062 >>2192201 I regularly stick moths in a jar of rubbing alcohol and spread third dead bodies on blocks of foam to display on my shelf, including quite a few hummingbird clearwings like in the OP

I looked through the catalog and couldn't find something similar so I thought I'd start a new QTDDTOTT.
Basically, I've said I'd petsit for my sister. She has a few cats, two rabbits and a dog. A young, unneutered dog (although they are planning on it). He's quite excitable, and while they are away I was hoping to maybe do a little bit of training, because he always jumps up. What would the people of /an/ recommend? I have 3 days. They said they were gonna take him to young dog training as they 'missed the puppy one'. I just don't want my clothes wrecked every time I go round. He's a Beagle Bassett cross. I've also been advised not to let him off the lead during walks as he chases things, so obviously his recall is piss poor.
Please accept this shoddy thread image as an apology for having to answer such a shoddy repetitive question. I'll try and answer other questions in an /r/ type manner. I have a zoology degree, just no dog experience.
Unfortunately you have to be consistent with dogs.. 3 days of training isn't going to stick.
I like clicker training. Start off by just making your noise (I snap my fingers, you can use a clicker, ballpoint pen, etc.) and give a treat. Don't expect the dog to do anything at first- he just needs to associate the noise with treats. When he's got that down, start giving him commands and whenever he makes any amount of progress, click and give a treat.
We've had our 11 year old rescue dog for 6 months now. She is a collie crossbreed, very well behaved and placid in nature and not at all boisterous.
Since day one we've had issues with getting her to eat regularly when food is put down. The shelter had advised us her previous diet had been poor and likely she was used to eating human food.
We have tried various brands and types of dry and wet food. We have tried adding gravy or water and even microwaving it for her to make it smell more appealing. I sometimes even add a carrot or bit of broccoli to tempt... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Well OP honestly I think the problem is that 40 minutes is just too long of a time to leave the food out. It doesn't give her a sense of schedule/urgency in eating her food.
I recommend leaving it out for only 15 minutes, then taking it away. Feeding twice a day is good.
That said, some dogs just don't have as much of an appetite as most do. As long as you know it's not a health issue, I wouldn't be too worried about it. When I was raising my puppy, she went through a period of being disinterested in her normal dog food. I did the 15 minute... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>2194786 >I know it can be hard to not offer the food again if she hasn't eaten, but just remember that a skipped meal or two isn't going to hurt her Not OP, but my dog vomits bile if he skips a meal. Apparently it's normal for dogs to do this if their stomachs are empty for too long; the bile irritates their stomachs if there's nothing else in there.
My dog's the type who always wants to hold out for something tastier and will only eat at the last possible second.... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
The spiderbro meme caused me to open up to lesser creatures and view them naturally as good and trustworthy, instead of fear or hate them. A a result of that, sometimes there are retarded ones like mosquitoes that I trust then they just suck my blood and make me sad. Which insects should I avoid or kill? Which insects are epic and trustworthy?
I'm thinking about getting a Vietnamese centipede. care seems pretty simple, and they're a no touch pet which is something I'm looking for. Idealy I'd like something I can keep in a 2.5 gallon glass enclosure, but nearly nothing is small enough.
what kind of invertebrates do you guys have? post pics. isopods, insects, arachnids and any other spineless creature are cool.
I'm terrified of centipedes but have considered getting one as a pet just to de-sensitize myself toward them. I remember getting apple snails for my aquarium and initially thinking they were spooky-looking water-aliums and thinking neocardina shrimp were like like water-cockroaches but over time they just became kawaii creatures roaming around and trying to live their lives. Maybe if I own a centipede I'll accept them as bros.
>squirrels keep taking pieces of fried chicken from trash cans in the neighborhood >drop them from the tree in my yard >have to keep chasing my beagle around the yard and forcefully taking them from her mouth so I don't have to pay for a vet visit What the hell do I even do about this? They're not mine, I don't know whose trash they're coming from, and I can't do a sweep of my hard every time I let my dog out 10 times a day. Is there any sort of mesh/chicken... Comment too long. >>2194497 I was thinking of doing something similar to a suicide barrier under all the branches, but I don't want birds and stuff to get hurt on it. Tought I'd ask around first in case maybe someone's doing something similar before. The pieces of chicken/bones always fall in a roughly 5 foot radius around the trunk of the tree, and the tree is maybe 30 feet tall at most. It only happens every month or so, so just when I think the problem is gone it happens again.
> be me > find brown recluse similar to pic related wandering around gas station > use the positive reinforcement methods I've seen here to potty train him > play with him until he's tired > mfw it's been three days and he's now pooping on command, hasn't chewed anything, and can be left alone without fucking up the house
I've got this friend who believes with the highest sincerity that sharks are mammals instead of fish. He constantly corrects me with his bullshit theory just by saying that some sharks give live birth. This is the only argument he uses. He doesn't search up information, doesn't give me evidence, he generally gives no backbone to his arguments.
