End of discussion
Either, They are both good, in the end it comes down to the lenses that you buy, and once you start buying lenses you are stuck with that brand because it will cost a small fortune to change them out at a later date.
I'd say Nikon, Canon lenses are more expensive just for some shitty plastic red ring around them.
Minolta master race, fucking losers.

Nikon for wiping my ass because it's higher quality for less money.
If you have an opportunity to get parts such as lenses, flash, etc cheap for one brand easily choose that one. Once you chose you stuck on that tho. Just check out the supply whereever you live. Canon here btw
Plebs talking about expensive lenses for canon when they should know about Tamron lenses.

If you don't want to have a headache trying to figure out how to change a simple function while your photo opportunity slips away, get the Canon 60D. Easy to control and you don't have to keep the instruction manual on you like a new Nikon user.
Canon for manual focus and different lenses, Nikon for all around use. I have a Nikon d3200 and I absolutely love it, and some of my friends have canons and are excellent photographers. Either one is good honestly
only good things to say about tamron lenses as well, 10/10 would recommend

60d is what I'm looking at.
Thanks, all information and feedback is appreciated. Even if you hate it, just tell me why.

What's the tamron 50mm 1.8 rendition?
What's it called or what's the closest lens that's similar to a 50mm 1.8
Good choice, OP. All of my DSLRs have been Canon. This is my 60D. And yes, that's a tamron lense
also, i got me an adapter to fit old canon fd lenses, saved me a shitload of money on stuff you seldom use like fisheye etc. Works just fine and you get every lense you want on ebay for a joke of a price

They are both good cameras, but I own a Canon 1100D. I use it mainly for astrophotography, because I've read on a lot of pages that Canon is a better choice for this.

Just pick the camera that you like more, you'll get used to it anyway

also, a pic I took yesterday
That's the Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8. (IF). A good overall lens.

I have a lot of lenses, one for every photo opportunity.
Pro here.
Espsecially if you want to shoot video (which I dont), Canon is the way to go.
Overall I 'm pretty happy with Canon so far.

>Canon or Nikon

If you are such a pleb not to buy a leica, then at least have enough self respect to go for a Rollei instead.
Nikon for photography, Canon for video.
I like Nikon, the only problem I have is the RAW files aren't really RAW they're 14bit. Not a problem really.
I went for Nikon because they made lenses for the moon landings.
Also paps and sports guys seem to go for Canon. Artists ans fashion go for Nikon.
CSI, NCIS etc. are the Nikon show. Blatent product placement.

It's generally what you feel comfortable with,
Photographer/Cinematographer here, It's also a good Idea to get some reasonable Cine Lenses.

Here's some of my kit.
Use your iPhone duh
And where do we fall on Pentax?
Nikon just seems so clunky to control for me. I friend bought one and asked me to help her figure out how to use the HDR function (which is really simple in a Canon DSLR). A half an hour later and looking through her instruction manual, and I still couldn't get it to work.

And I'm an artist/photographer who uses Canon.

took this with my 'scope and an old Nikon D40 a while back.
Mosaic of lots of shots...
And I'm an artist/photographer who uses Nikon.
I've been using a Canon 60D for years now and I love it.
Canon over all is easier to use and way better for videography.
Nikon though, tends to have better lenses and are better for still photography.

Manual focusing though (which is what you have to do when it comes to video) is best on 60D because you can just buy old lenses and get adapters off Ebay for like 3 bucks each.
Saves you a tonne of money in the end
Please tell me the trick for HDRs using a Nikon. That problem still gets me raging.
what do those Cine lenses cost roughly, anon??

Quick question, why is Nikon better for still photography? Is it because of the better low light performance or?
On my D5100 it's just in the menu and does it automatically. Overdone HDR looks awful.
In my experience, a good lens is more important than the camera body. I've used a rented canon ultrasonic lens with an entry level body and was very pleased with the results.
That was one of my very first HDR when I was just getting into the game. It was the only one I had saved on my phone.

I couldn't find the option on my friend's Nikon. Pissed me off so much.
Well for starters, I'm just going to first go for the 50mm 1.8.
I bought my set 4 primes,

85mm T1.5
35mm T1.5
24mm T1.5
16mm T2.2

For about £1,450 Inc VAT
They all have long focus rings and smooth aperture rings (No clicks) and notched areas for attaching follow focuses.
(T-stop is essentially the same as F-stop)
Exactly. You can't polish a turd.
Also good glass holds it's value for at least a decade in most cases. Camera bodies, esplecially entry level drop price in months.

Smooth aperture rings are great for videos yes?

So would those lenses work on a 60d?

You wanna' give me the money for that sht? Lmao
Yeah, the smooth aperture rings makes it really great for changing the light smoothly, you can transition from low light to high light really easily and without it looking dodgy.

Cine lenses just add some great little details with video.
This is something we shot a while ago using the lenses in the picture, this was the first music video I'd shot so don't be too harsh on the cinematography. haha

Still overdone in my humble opinion. Zero contrast means no "composition". A flat (yet detailed) image. Quite sterile.
Because the interface on the camera system focuses it's quality on running the still photography system.
on Canon's it splits between the video and the photography, thus dumbing down the quality a bit.
at least, I'm pretty sure that's why.
The lenses on Nikons are overall just better quality as well (not as shittily made)
and yes they will fit any canon DLSR
Canadafag here...
so that's around $3000 then. But than seems reasonable for the quality you would get for filming, and the speed as well.
I use shitty old manual lenses (Japanese and some Soviet made brands), they have great image quality, but tend to be a little on the slow side
I've been using some old screw mount lenses with an adapter on my 7D, they're not bad for video but they seem to lack a little when it comes to photography, might just be my lenses though

I quite liked it, and the music was good.

Could you link me to some of the lenses you use? Also, I'm canadian as well!

That's a really good point. Although I think I'm going to be doing both quite often so I think I'm fine with losing a bit of quality to get decent results from both photo and video. I agree though that the lenses do seem like they are really low in quality.
Another problem with Nikon is you need an adapter with an optical element to achieve infinity focus.
Got a nice Japanese 70's 135mm f2.8 (£18).
2.8 at 135mm is pretty good, especially for that price, hows the quality?
Mind telling me the moddle?

is there a specific adapter or something you need to use old japanese lenses?
also how would i go about looking up japanese lenses, i want to find something with a large aperture. At least 1.8
canon 5d mkii with magic lantern.
It's "Auto Chinon" but most were made in the same factories with different names on.
Quality is pretty sharp as it's a prime. Still waiting to get the adapter to properly test it out.
Remember when shooting video even in HD the resolution is quite low compared to film so any softness is removed when scaling down the image.
I was filming a concert once and the singer for the band (which was a trap.. so posting this on /b/ makes it that much more appropriate)
s(he) knocked over my camera on the tripod, which had my newer Canon 50mm lens..
it shattered into a million pieces and s(he) compensated me by giving me another 50mm and like 300mm zoom lens.
shit was pretty cash.

and I use myself
- a vivitar 55mm wide angle (kind of is really shitty with light, so using a completely open aperture in bright daylight doesn't work too well... still a great lens overall though)
- Zenit 58mm (slow, but beautiful image quality.. great glass)
- Pentax 50mm (very quick focusing, can use an auto assistance ring)
- Sigma 70 - 250mm zoom (fantastic lens)
- asahi 35mm (haven't used this one much, but it captures a wide view)
- opteka mirror f8.0 (hard to use when handheld, but a pretty stellar piece)

Vid related > shot with the sigma lens (the editing wasn't by me though)
Nikon. Because there is no better. Owned both, so fucking glad I switched away from Canon and their cheap cameras.
I'd look for Japanese or Russian lenses with an M42" mount, other adapters are hard or impossible to find.
Helios Russian lenses are good 35mm and 50mm f1.8.
Just look on ebay for s/h primes and scroll. Got mine from pawn shops (cashconverters). Most people think they're junk so sell them for buttons.

I'm looking at a 50mm 1.8 by Helios here on e-bay, but it says it'll only work on Kiev or Contax 35mm rangefinder cameras
I don't know much about adapters, if you have valuable information on adapters and what to use for what, could you share please?
