"The pen is lighter than the shovel"
My grandpa used to say that all his life to my dad.
When he came to Canada from Italy, my dad and, his sister and his parents had less than $1000. They essentially lived crammed together in a cheap motel for a while until my grandpa got a job as a construction worker and my grandma got one working in a sewing factory, making pants.
Fast forward 60 years, and through being insanely frugal, my grandpa died with two houses, and a bunch of Italian gold jewelry.
He hated working construction, but he did it because he had to. Even though he hated it, he was driven by the motive of keeping food on the table for his family. He didn't want my dad to have to go through the same rough life as he did.
Wish I didn't see this thread, since it reminded me of him. I didn't know him as well as my brothers because I was born in Ontario, while they were born in Winnipeg. Whenever it was some holiday like Father's day, my birthday, his birthday, and Christmas, I'd always have to talk to him on the phone. I always would try to talk to him as fast as possible since I felt terrible that I could barely understand him through his thick accent. He would always laugh while on the phone, and I didn't know what he was laughing about since I couldn't hear whether or not he was telling a joke, or not. But it turned out he was laughing because he knew I couldn't understand him. All I understood was him saying "How are you?", and when he passed away that's all that kept playing in my head.
Night guys. <3

"You never wont know what you can't achieve before you don't achieve it". - Ben Dover
"Most things in the world are neither black nor white, but grey. If you cannot accept things that don't match your ideals perfectly, you'll only make yourself and everyone around you unhappy."
I didn't choose the feels, the feels chose me. This one might ring a little too deep for some of you:
Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their nutritious sweetness, telling yourself you would've tasted as many as you could.
"I dropped a tear into the ocean today, when they find it, I'll stop loving you"
I can't remember the source. Read it in a book of poems as a kid and it's one of the few things that's stuck with me for some reason.
what are these quotes even good for? i think they are the most fucking pretentious thing. the WORST part is that they are good sayings WITHIN their text. taking one little line and taking it out of context, to me, is the most pretentious and lame thing to do
and don't tell me "inspiration"

“We're all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn't. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing.”
― Charles Bukowski
