Scarface. Boring as shit and none of the characters were likable.

Hot and Naughty: Just Turned 18
you mean underrated, fuck you Ebert!
lotr and the hobbit. peter jackson just sucks.
first he fucks up the lore.
most shitty fighting scenes i've ever seen.
then he fucks more with the lore in the hobbit, and even adds his own bullshit to it, which wont even work with the original story.
also no tom bombadill at all.
You must be a real hoot at parties.
This film was such a self indulgent dissapointment.
Same here dude, I fucking love that movie.
Had heard good things about this movie, but ultimately hated it. Feel like it tries way too hard to hamfist the entire 99% mentality behind the riots years ago or social unrest that it makes the setting and characters unbelievable. Characters feel like they are simply behaving the way they are to service the ultimate message of the movie rather than being as a believable character.
Still think it's an average movie, but not deserving of the ratings it has on Rotten Tomatoes or from what I've heard other people claim.
Overrated yes, but still a good movie. Did the book justice.
>Requiem For a Dream
How is this overrated at all? When's the last time you heard someone say their favorite movie was Requiem?
>2001: A Space Odyssey
A little overrated, but it was good as fuck.
Fucking hated this movie
>oh but dat symbolism
>oh it's so deep
You can make a fucking symbolic, complicated movie plot related to todays culture without it being some stupid bullshit with fish slipping and all the other garbage that happens in that piece of shit movie.
Can I just say, yeah mediocre movie, story, blah blah typical joss whedon nothing about this movie is over the top.
What marvel did build up to this movie was epic and innovating. They took 4 different movie titles and pointed towards one big collaboration putting them all together under one title. Years of anticipation and build up realized in one movie title, that is why it holds box office records, not because it was a great movie in and of itself.
This is why I don't believe this movie is overrated.
Don't understand the love for this. To me its only one step above Twilight, and it is just another tweenage movie. Main character is pretty much a pair of pants for women, like it was for Twilight.
Only reasons to watch this would be the special effects and Jennifer Lawrence.
I enjoy other older horror movies, these three just didn't appeal to me, was just one scene after the other that didn't seem to mesh together at all. I assume it is something you had to watch when they first released, or when you were younger, watching them for the first time when you're 25 and in 2014 just means they weren't great. The practical effects and models and stuff were amazing, especially for their time, but the movies as a whole were just eh.
again, how is requiem overrated? just because people think it's a good movie?
i have *never* seen requiem on anyone's top 10 lists or anything like that. nobody said it was a groundbreaking film or one of the greatest of it's genre.
You pretty much just answered yourself as to why you don't like that movie while other people do. You aren't the demographic for those films, it's for the same people that like Twilight, teens, especially girl teens. The fact that the movie industry and media is trying to blow it up bigger than it is annoys me, you've got all those comedy spoof related movies coming out about it, then you've got movies trying to cash in on the same themes like Divergent, all the talk show hosts trying to pretend like they love the movies. All to get teen girls to obsess over them because the TV is telling them it's popular. But anyone that watches a movie for the movie and not for the hype surrounding it is going to find them shit because they are bland with nothing special.
the only one scene that shocked me
Like this movie. Really wish I could love it.
Still think it's overrated to hell. Good special effects, but felt the plot was lackluster.
Yeah I have watched them, I didn't say the story lines didn't mesh, I said the scenes didn't mesh. It's just one scene after another where something spooky happens, oh look the things coming out of the basement now, oh look he's getting a chainsaw attached to his arm, oh look some cool backwards footage of wax melting to look like a creature is coming to life. When you're whole horror plot can be summed up with "There is a cabin, and monsters happen." for two whole movies, then I'm not going to like it because of the lack of substance.
It all happened because of the necronomicon. They read from the book like morons and nonsense ensued. also ash had to cut his hand off because he had been bitten and was about to be infected.
Instead he put his infected hand in a trash can and covered it with "A Farewell to Arms"
Really? Only thing bad about this movie was all the unnecessary cursing. It was a surprisingly good movie with no help from advertising. This movie got big by word of mouth. People don't praise this movie above everything but it is a good movie and should get the credit it deserves.
oh, idk about you but i've been told it's a "great movie" by more people than i can count on one hand at least
not even film students, mostly on 4chan, actually
i went to the trouble of watching it because enough people told me to
unnecessary curing? Nigger, do you know where you are?
Not to mention if you were being shot at, being turned into an alien scum lord, had your life ruined, were being hunted down by essentially the south african army and the south african nigger drug lords, you would be fucking swearing all the time too.
so much this. OP and most of this thread are trying to be edgy. By "overrated", they mean on /b/, not mainstream. That said, I agree that that movie rarely even makes a list here. He's just an idiot for thinking it is even rated, much less OVERrated.
Have a point. Though I was disappointed as had very high expectations by word of mouth. Bunch of friends had claimed it to be one of their favorite movies, and I ultimately found it just pretty average.
Star Wars is fucking hugely overrated, it's not bad, they are alright films, a nice sci fi serious, but by god has it been blown out to shit, people making it into a religion when the movies are just good.
I've been watching RedLetterMedia for years, and they classify it as this great classic. Had this verified by some friends, and was looking forward to it. Bored to tears during the first 2, the third was ok, but definitely nothing special
>how is requiem overrated?
I haven't seen it personally but I do hear about it and it comes up frequently in "top movies" threads. Everytime I've heard about it its been through someone singing its praises.
Unless you're a teenager who likes dumb things, I doubt you LOVE the Hunger Games. You also pretty much describe why its appealing. GG
You can't really take this movie out of the context of the social revolution it was meant to capture and the culture surrounding it.
On its own its not very good, and I'm pretty sure everyone knows that. No one sits at home and watches Rocky.
Fucking THIS. This whole movie is just a fucking lullaby for adults.
Not every movie has to have a likeable character you toddler.
i actually loved the remake a lot better than I thought I would. If anything, I think it was underrated. For example, if the original trilogy didn't exist (which I loved), the remake came out when the first one did, people would have been shitting bricks -- I was laughing through the whole damn movie.
You have to consider the cultural impact Star Wars had. It did what it did extremely well. We're living in an age thats super saturated by it so its easy not to be impressed.
>Avatar is the most ove-rated film of all time, easily.
i mean, maybe the general opinion on the first is a tad inflated, but i feel like thats justified because its a good fuckin movie. evil dead 2 is definitely the opposite of overrated, everyone i know thats seen it hates it
A movie should not be judged by its cultural impact, it should be judged by it's own standings. In fact the whole point of this thread is we are going against it's cultural impact (how popular it is) and saying they aren't that great. Yes Star Wars has had a huge impact in the world, no doubt about that, but as the movies stand by themselves, they are alright, nothing special.
As for the Avatar thing, he is probably talking about the TV show.
Evil dead original and 2 were shit but army of darkness was fantastic. Evil dead was popular because of pushing the limits of acceptable modern "gore". Army of darkness was ducking awesome and hilarious, by far surpassing the overrated judgement.
ITT: People confuse being commercially successful with being an overrated film
No one thought Avatar was a fantastic film, or even original in any way. But it was visually stunning. I spent almost a year hating it before I actually saw it, and I had to at least give it props for that.
The collossal amount of money it made, they way it broke into China, and people licking the ass of Cameron for "pushing technology forward" (in the wrong direction; cg will never look good on its own and fuck 3d.)
It was the most celebrated film of all time and it's basically a children's cartoon. Compare it to an actual classic and you realise how awful the script/plot/acting/concept is. Only good thing about it is Sigourney Weaver in space again.
>No one thought Avatar was a fantastic film, or even original in any way.
Not sure which sophisticated rock you live under, but people acted like Avatar was the second coming of Christ.
This. Dear lord this. The worst mistake I ever made is going to a screening of this drunk simply because I needed a ride.
I don't understand why this movie generated a whole subculture.
The thing about the great CGI in Avatar was they could only acomplish it because the human/real actors weren't mixed in with the CGI that much (and when they were you could see how much they stood out) when your whole world is CGI (and not to mention alien and strange looking) it's not hard to make it look great, because we don't have a point of reference of what that stuff is meant to look like and because we don't have a direct point of reference of what a real world filmed object looks like next to it. I'm terrible at explaining but I hope my point can be understood.
>they are alright, nothing special
Its nothing special because everything that was special about it has created a thousand and one derivative works that have saturated the market for almost half a century.
I understand that the overall story is pretty bland. The first one is the perfect stereotypical "hero does the thing" tale. But when judging a work as "overrated" you have to consider how it gained that rating in the first place. Its like calling the first wheel overrated because we live in a world where they're common now.
Because it was pretty. No one walked away from Avatar going "Jesus christ that just changed MY WHOLE LIFE and how I think about GOD AND THE UNIVERSE"
The whole thing about being "overrated" though is that the movie has to hold up to the rating that the general public give it, can you honestly say that Star Wars holds up to the praise it is given? The higher the praise the higher the bar, honestly I don't think there is any movie in existence that could live up to the hype that Star Wars has.
what's weird is if i had done this in the same thread on /b/ 5 years ago, there would have been a shitstorm. now? nothing.
it's because probably half of the userbase now is <20.
how the HELL has this not been posted yet? /tv/ would be proud
>The whole thing about being "overrated" though is that the movie has to hold up to the rating that the general public give it, can you honestly say that Star Wars holds up to the praise it is given?
No, but I was also born in the 90s, when it was re-released for like the 20th time. I grew up in a culture saturated with references to it, spoilers for it, and every sci-fi work mining from it.
That being said, from my perspective the film is pretty basic. The story is good, because it sets out to do something and does it well, but I wasn't left really impressed.
I'm surprised myself actually. Though it's doubtful many people have seen it.
Agreed, its got multiple plot holes for anyone who knows enough about science, sci fi or even has common sense. Also it was too long at least 30mins of "feelings" could have been cut out of that B- pos.
This pile of shit
besides good cinematography it was complete garbage
Most of the AFI top 100 films. Particularly the higher rated films/classic films. I understand that they're pioneers in the movie industry, but I just don't think they should be rated that high.
I do enjoy these films by the way. Just don't agree with their rating.
Episodes four through six are not overrated, since they lived up to the hype they created. The rest of the Star Wars media, though, including cartoons and vidya, is overrated as fuck.
I'm not saying those games aren't good, and I know I enjoyed them. I'm saying they are overrated. Think about it; if they weren't Star Wars themed, they would be considered average at best.
What's wrong with you two?
