Does /b/ nostalgia?
Does /b/ 90s tech/internet nostalgia?
What do you remember of the 90s?
NOSTALGIA THREAD. ALL THINGS TECH/COMPUTER/INTERNET RELATED GET IN HERE!
I say 2005 marked the time the internet went to shit. the early internet while slow, provided a barrier of entry to those without technical know-how effectively making the internet a haven for nerds geeks and other like-minded individuals.
unfortunately with the advent of web 2.0 social media YouTube and the like we have now introduced the Internet to people who honestly have no business being here.
inb4 sekrit club shit
this makes me sad.
having used the internet since the mid-90s, i witness the massive changes it underwent in the mid-2000s.
while some changes arent bad, the fact that now no one does anything on the internet unless they can get money from it, has turned the web into a pile of dogshit.
before people made content with no regards to profit. they did it because they wanted to, and if they lost money, no matter, because it was a HOBBY first and foremost. now if someone tries an original idea, it gets copied to death to the point the creator gets shouted down
Was going to post this. Nice m8. You got a source where I can get this beauty from that runs on a W7 machine? If not I'll go get myself a VM, but I would be very glad to avoid that mess.
I miss when viruses/malware were only interested in destroying your machine, not hiding and mining the fuck out of you for personal info.
also, WHY THE FUCK ARE POPUPS AND INVASIVE ADS CONSIDERED NORMAL?
back in my day we lynched webmasters who did this shit.
on GOG now. and compatible with windows.
>i would wait for it to go on sale. or just download it somewhere.
I already have all the games I am posting. I also know how to get and install any game or software I can think of. I have a Linux file server that I download all my torrents through. It tunnels all traffic through a VPN in Sweden. Firewall rules only allowcit to talk to that server, so no leakage occurs.
I have heard rumors that GOG galaxy will fill the void left by ZONE when it closed.
When internet chat rooms starting growing, i remember all the "never give real names, never give out personal information" parents and teachers would tell us. Now, everyone puts all their information on the internet and are surprised when some one does anything shady with it. The internet used to be like the wild west, now its like the mild west.
Remember when the joke was about how tiny phones were getting?
I still say napster was the superior music distribution software. even today (if it still existed)
This nigga speaks truth.
There was an article I read where something like a fifth of all Internet users think Facebook is THE internet.
yes. People exist that think Facebook is the literal definition of what the Internet is.
>People exist that think Facebook is the literal definition of what the Internet is.
a lot of people in this world are clueless fucking morons and I have to deal with these stupid cunts every day.
you know what's even scarier?
these people don't even know they're stupid. they're surrounded by stupid people so they think their retarded ideas are normal and flip their shit right out when someone says to them:
> hey.. did you know you're a fucking idiot?
it's a sick sad fucking world.
Granted, the sample size was taken from 3rd world countries, but i'd be willing to bet that if you polled EU or US you would get similar results.
For me the golden years were between 2003-2008
In those 5 years PC's really fucking evolved into something incredible along with internet speed.
FaceBook is GARBAGE. So glad I deleted my account 4 years ago. fuck that shit.
you're obviously one of those retards that only started using the internet in this millennium while it was shit.
> be me
> bulletin boards
> and fucking morons as far as the eye can see
things were fucking shit then too but it's hard to remember through the feelings of nostalgia and the sounds of furious circle jerking.
I remember the early 90s when almost no one had a cell phone and if you wanted music, you had to actually buy the damn CD. there was little copying or sharing of music unless it was on tape.
Once I got married and had kids, it was time to go.
Seriously. Myspace was cool in HighSchool....But once I started college and saw the mess that FaceBook was, I got rid of it,
It's provides too much personal info.
I wont give you an autograph, but here is a pic of my scrubs.
well no fucking shit the BBS set up was total ass. that was when that entire "sector" if you will was in total meltdown, destroy itself mode.
when people tried monetizing the BBS, that gave rise to a BBS conference (cant remember the naem) where a few "board members" kicked out some of the original creators (notably Tom Jennings)
after that, BBS died and the internet began.
the late 80s/early 90s for the BBS were very ugly. and i see the exact same fucking thing happening with the web
>there was little copying or sharing of music unless it was on tape.
piracy was huge during the 90s. before cd burning became dirt cheap people would record cds onto DAT tapes or other mediums and distribute that way.
>the late 80s/early 90s for the BBS were very ugly. and i see the exact same fucking thing happening with the web
yep. and that's just fucking sad.
>see sub7 on news piece.
>get it working
>manage to sucker a few friends to install "a game i just coded" then say "oh. i need to find a bug" when it threw an error
>use it for about 2 weeks then realized it was a pile of shit and amounted to nothing more than VNC
>opening the CD tray was always fun
Oh man the fucking 90's!!!! BACK IN 1999! AIM MESSENGER!!! Man back in the day, you would message your XTC dealer on AIM. Chat with chicks while doing homework! IT WAS THE FUCKING BOMB! Life was more productive back than. Less distractions like fucking youtube and shit.
Man the nostalgia makes me want to cry.
So, how come at an urban university with 25K students, I never saw anyone pirate music in 4 years, EVER? unless it was "dubbing" a cassette or CD to another cassette. Sure it was possible with expensive DAT or whatever, and maybe 3 people were into it, but it was NOT "huge"...not for 20 somethings anyway
>Floppy disks, 56k modem, fuck them both
i'm so glad that shit is over with.i still remember the pain all too well.
because your university is full of sad lamers that wouldn't know how to tie their own shoes without written directions, or a least an instructional video that plays in their dorms every morning?
There still is a lot of content created just for its sake. Like this whole website, what people post, what image s they create or, looking at /f/ flashes which are created solely for fun.
>oh hey, anon is on. let me ask if...
>door slams shut
>o-okay then... ill talk to him later...
my boyfriend showed me 4chan back in 2006 lol.
I come on here when I am bored at work.
also.. (i forgot to add) that indeed, it was expensive, which is another reason why you wouldn't see no broke ass uni students with high quality bootlegs of ANYTHING. I'd be shocked if they had food to eat when they crawled back to their dens of lameness and their 'this is how you tie your shoes, dumbass' instructional videos.
im not so sure its over.
excluding pure downloads, surfing is becoming slower and slower as people bloat the mortal fuck out of their website with plugin after plugin and calls to 345234 other websites.
>people bloat the mortal fuck out of their website
Treasure Mathstorm was the pinnacle of my grade 1
This is al you get. lol.
Everytime I read GTFO or tits..I'm like okay...another cheesedick loser. lol
my current fetish is my sister and i had a dream a few nights ago, one of those ultrarealistic ones you know?
so we're in her bed, and we're making out, and it feels like we're making out, and then all of a sudden my mum is up at my ear, smiling going LALALALALALAL like really loud
so loud it woke me up and i could still hear it
freaky shit man, true too
anyone else trying to shoot that stupid dog in the face, when he laughed in your fuckin face?
Oh fuck that game was pretty damn good considering what it had to compete with at the time. I remember some newscasters flipping their shit about being able to play pacman on phones just as recent as 2004. You've got to appreciate the present to appreciate the future.
That's true in half.
Social media is not that bad, whatapp/viber are good.
I don't really like facebook/twitter.
I don't know how to explain in a better way because of my limited english.
You are a cheese dick loser. If you know 4chan, then you know togtfo and you would comply. Therefore you are just a man looking to pretend to be a girl and feel pretty for a few minutes.
the way it used to be played.
now if only 3dfx didnt go full retard in its quest to destroy nvidia. we would have THREE major GPU makers and not 2
Troll is obvious, clearly this bitches manlet posting pictures of his dream girl but is to beta to contact her via social media because hes a fedora wearing, V mask sportin, white knight faggot that is spreading aids and cancer in this glorious nostaliga thread
I remember chat rooms. I used to con girls out of nude pics. I would say "pic of me and my sword. send to receive". And after I got their pic I'd send them a pic of Galford from Samurai Showdown. Good times.
>see obvious troll is obvious
>continues to feed it
so a three year old isn't a kid?
Here is your proof
my first computer had 20mb harddrive...
Leisure Suit Larry
loved those games
>8gb Maxtor hard drive
it seems so tiny today.
sadly i have noticed that nearly everyone takes this shit for granted now. Even software devs who think
>i can be a lazy nigger coding this thing. space is so plentiful and Ram so cheap, they will just cover for all the bugs i wont remove when i release it.
when HDD space blew up, people stopped being efficient.
I used to load up a porn page and then go watch TV while it loaded so I could come back and fap to it later. I'm not talking HD videos here /b/ros. I'm talking just a few JPEGs. Yep, you had to plan ahead for that shit.
i still go by that mantra. (aside from online shopping etc)
but im finding it increasingly tough to get anything done online anymore since more and more people are requesting personal info just to access the site.
freenet our last option?
I've got one at home, but on vacation right now.
I have an Atari 2600, a Flashback (got it before we realized there were well-restored originals at the cartridge shop), and a Genesis remake (with wireless controllers plus ports for wired and cartridges) here though.
when did you get your first street legal CPU?
>watch peoples webcams
Either this is bullshit, you used a much later version, or you were one of the very lucky few whose mark used a webcam that sub7 actually saw.
the version in the 90s/2000/20001 had webcam functionality but it never worked, except for i think 1 brand of camera
This is what started it for me. But they didn't really have porn, just 'nude art', was good enough for me though lol...
I had the MP3 attachment you could cram in the back. You stored the songs on little SD cards that could only hold about 3 songs each. I only had one. The three songs were: FReak on a leash, break stuff, and some weird al song about cows.
I remember finding chicks from the US, from Secondlife, and had cybersex with them over AOL.
Those were the times.
it's the same company man
all your messages are stored forever, so secretly associated with your facebook account and you don't even know it
sauce: I work for the goverment
The time when battling someone on a school bus meant Pokemon blue/red link cable battles.
My dad had that exact one. A a blue pager
What was nice about those disks is that you could use them as sources in your reports.
now with wikipedia (which most schools dont accept as a source), obtaining acceptable information requires a bit of digging now, which usually means several full days at the library.
nothing wrong with the library, but the convenience is gone
back in 1995 my parents gave me a pager as a way to notify me to call/come home
within a few months, nearly every fucking kid in my neighborhood had their own pager.
>the pager idea was actually pretty good
And this was a much maligned curiosity.
A friend of mine had her father's Startac. You can't imagine how slim I thought the thing was at the time.
The qualcomms (back when they made phones) were pretty damn thin for the time.
Indeed. So damn fine.
In Jr. High, get baked with a few friends and then spend hours playing this or MTG. No better multiplayer game available on DOS.
I was a Snake II fucking MASTER. Pic related, my top score. Screen filled. Theoretical maximum was 5k I think.
HAHA we used to watch this shit in class on laser disk. . .fucking laser disk.
Did anyone else have this game on all the macs in school?
My first internet experience
>Get AOL trial disk from Kroger
>Get home, install on my shitty windows 98
>Screen name? Lildrummerboy.jpg
>Get on yahoo
>search Britney Spears naked
>Turn off pc
Anyone else remember this glorious masterpiece?
anyone remember hotline connect?
Before MMORPGs were a thing...
Before Ultima Online...
Also, editing your config.sys and autoexex.bat untill that game refusing to start finally worked.
I hated Win98 for stopping that.
