Biz, here's what you need to know to be a successful long-term mutual fund investor.
1. Invest in mutual funds, not individuals stocks. If you think you have good odds to beat a team of full-time quants working 60-hour weeks with priority latency to trading servers, you're delusional. 2. Invest in the future of the human race. Go diverse, go broad. You're going to want to be invested long and diverse when the next breakthrough comes out, whether it be alternate energy, tech, or healthcare innovation. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you don't... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Guide to choosing funds. 1. Make sure the expense ratio is low (0.5% at most). Expense ratio is $ you are giving away to the fund manager. Index funds are particularly nice here, with some Vanguard offerings having a < 0.1% expense ratio. 2. Lookup the fund's turnover rate, and make sure it is lower than 50%..the lower the better. A turnover rate is the % of stocks that the manager buys/sells in a given year relative to the total. A high turnover rate indicates the fund managers do not have discipline or are only chasing short term goals. Turnover can also be a... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Index funds are ideal, but there are some active funds out there with decent managers. What to look for in an active fund is the following: 1. Look up the fund management on Morningstar. Check the chief manager's..are they bouncing around from fund to fund? Bad sign, that indicates they care more about their own professional growth than their fund. 2. Check out the top 10 holdings in the fund. Are they boring? GOOD! Market typically charges a premium on "exciting" companies such as Apple, Facebook, etc. Boring companies are generally overvalued. 3. Are... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I'm curious if anybody here has any experience working in fields that 'sort of' require you to have a degree, but only to prove your credentials to a potential client. Meaning that your degree is irrelevant in terms of you getting hired.
A few examples >Psychologist/Therapist >Personal Trainer >Dietician
I can't think of any more at the moment... I'm an avid reader, and Philosophy and Psychology have always been huge passions of mine. I'm... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>1046837 I mean I get that it sounds bullshit. I just think that there's a bit of a disconnect in peoples' lives today. A lot of people have way too much stress. Stress from work, stress from relationships, an existential crisis, their personal finances, their body image/nutritional health/fitness level.
I'm not really where I want to be yet exactly, but I've come a LOOONG way personally. The ability to share that with other people and help them get on their feet would be extremely rewarding for... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Im a sophomore in college and I've been thinking lately: "hm i wanna buy a house"
My ideal conditions are a 4bed/3bath house for 110k. I would move into one of the rooms, so I dont have to live in these smelly dorms. Also, I would rent out the rest of the house by room for 450 a month and thats what I would use to pay the mortgage off.
I would get the down payment from myself, my parents, and a previous professor that's interested in investing his money into the house for a future payoff. I would get the mortgage from a bank with my parents... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>1046668 >Would it work /biz/ ? You found the supplier, and you've comp'd the prices on amazon, so it should... in theory. Are you competing against your supplier on amazon? Can you move a 40' container of wine glasses?(guess you'd only have to move 1/4 to get your money back)
Hi /biz/, is studying architecture worth it? >will I find work >how much money can I expect to make in the EU (compared to an engineer) Atm I'm in my first semester of mechanical engineering but I find myself being unsure if I can finish it with acceptable grades, also architecture interests me a bit more.
Don't make this type of inquiry. It'll only disappoint you. All anyones says is how hard/impossible their field is, and it's all bullshit. Yes, you need to work hard, but if you put in the hours and have any semblance of talent (and no major mental/physical disability preventing you from succeeding in said field), you will make it. You can be whatever you want to be within reason.
If you're going to be doing what you're doing for the next 40 years, you might as well be passionate about it.
You're not going to fail if you put in the work. Millions of people have done this before you. Do you really think they are superior to you? Be proactive. Talk to your professors. Tell them about shortcomings/what you're struggling with, and let them know that you want to be as good as possible. If you are proactive with a professor, you really can't fail.
Like seriously, where the fuck do I go from my current position.
I'm fully engulfed in the society circle of a dead end job and constant paycheck to paycheck. I have literally $0 by the time I have paid everything, even then I'm still starving myself every month,
My dream has always ALWAYS been to start my own business or get into investments but I just don't know where to go from my position, It's like I'm trapped in this circle and there is no way for me to make capital (loans aren't an option)... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

Figure something out man.
Think unconventionally. Learn and practice a new skill, you can easily monetize with the internet.
Hi /biz/ I graduated last may with a degree in Economics and am currently working as a data analyst making $51k a year. I was brought in at $41k/yr but then earned a promotion and a raise. I'm 21 years old about to turn 22.
My family is really pressuring me to get a master's degree. I've been thinking about doing one part time through a state school or something so I can pay for it in cash while I work, but they want me to go to expensive private schools and stop working. They don't intend to help pay or anything, they didn't even help pay for... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>1046597 I enjoy my job alright. Usually the beginning orf the month is boring because we're just making standard end of the month reports for the executives. After that though we tackle ad hoc requests. Before I started doing the data analyst job I was in the fraud department, so I act sort of as a liaison for them, and handle a lot of the fraud requests, so it's cool shit.
Econ is good but make sure to supplement with Stats and math. Same with finance really. If you do that it really opens up your potential.... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
i have many questions about this. for my background, i live in florida and have only access to UPS to ship.
>1 what is the maximum amount of days that i can specify for 'handling time' on ebay? ideally, i want to only leave the house once a week to ship all the items that people buy. would i be able to do this or will it violate the 'ship the day you receive payment' standards thing?
>2 how do i prepare packages for shipping? is there a way that i can have everything packaged... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I've been told I'm a pretty good writer and would definitely like to give it a shot since I can use the experience and extra money. Could you elaborate further perhaps? What kind of products are we talking about?
Russian government will gibe Far East clay to every Russian citizen if he wants since march 2016.
It must be 1 hectare per person and far from big cities.
What can I do with possible clay? You must understand there is no infrastructure and climate is mostly continental and pretty harsh. I thing I must legalize the ownership of some southern Kurilian island clay on warm ocean shore and live there like Di Caprio.
beautiful island. I dont know is it included into program(probably no, since it's on border and have strategic meaning; or not; idk) , but it's nice and close to Japan(actually, we took it in 1945, so Japan claim it's right on it every time)
