Have we found THE Rose Quartz wig, gulls?
I like the wig a lot, but I think the makeup is lacking. I feel like Rose needs big, dramatic lashes and pink lips to be Rose. Blush would be good too. Her appearance and personality is large and dramatic and stunning, makeup included.
I really don't like all the little tendril-y curls. Having some smaller curls in the back/on the top might be fine, but I think it looks really gross when pushed to the front. Especially since Rose Quartz typically only has two big ol' sausage curls over her shoulders like that.
serious question why doesn't somebody skinny cosplay rose quartz? Would that person get shamed out of con? Because honestly her design would look so much better on a skinny person (or a person with actual hourglass body)
i feel like thin people would get looked at wrong for cosplaying her. and a thin frame might easily be drowned in a huge wig+ big dress. im a US size 8-10 and i got called a 'skinny rose' and ive never been called 'skinny' before then. but i dont think fat immediately=bad for rose. there are some people that carry weight in a flattering way (like pic related. her cosplay isnt incredible but i feel like she has a really good body for rose). a lot of people dont want to hear it, but rose isnt flabby with a huge gut. she's more 'plus sized model' sized
finishing my last thought with a picture for comparison. she still has a defined waist and a nice figure, but is clearly bigger than average.
>cosplay what you want! It's about loving the character! you don't have to fit the body type
>Omg too skinny for rose.
I'm skinny as fuck. This makes me want to cosplay her just to fuck with all the hypocrites
ugh is there any promising peridot floating around?
I disagree, the wigs we've seen that are only huge curls look stiff and unnatural like pic related. OP's image is my favorite wig so far because of the mix. The color is nice too.
other than the fact that it's the wrong color, i like it too. im biased towards the looser, more natural curls. props to people who put the effort into huge drill curls, but they almost always look too stiff for my taste
Personally I like the volume but there's no curls. The wig reminds me of a Peg Bundy bouffant tbh but if she added some curls on the sides it'd look great.
Pic related is another RQ wig I like.
since we are talking wigs now. what way of styling do you gulls like best for Peridot? cartoony and stiff? natural? a mix of both?
wig fibers are a must yes
Very true, I've seen some good realistic ones as well. I just personally like the cartoony look. The realistic type is also probably a good method for people who don't know how to make the cartoony type look good and clean.
this is definitely the best cartoony one. I fail to find a more natural one I like
So can we all agree to stop asking for "perfect" versions of a cosplay, or bitching when something isn't 10/10? The thread so far is a really good example of why this is an impossible feat: everyone has a different opinion on what's perfect.
Yeah, it's silly to think everyone will agree that a single cosplayer is perfect and will satisfy everyone. There are a few that are better than average (like a top 5 list) but there won't ever be a #1 peridot, Rose Quartz, etc.
>everyone has a different opinion on what's perfect.
This. SU has really stylized designs so people will fill in how it would translate to real life differently from person to person. That said, this is /cgl/ and people are always striving for perfection here, so people will always find a way to nitpick something.
First person who posted about OPs wig. I would much rather the curls an the volume be handled like this from the previous thread (what she did with the bangs is gross, but whatever). I also believe there's a way with hairspray to get big sausage curls without them being gross, unmoving, tangled messes. I'm just waiting on a friend to get her wigs for Rose to start testing different techniques.
I wasn't going to post this but as we're on the topic of peridot wigs, thoughts opinions on mine?? I'm in the middle of wefting.
looks kind of similar to >>8661239. it looks bad but since you said its a wip i take it shes probably going to be covering those tracks with wefts that wont show as much. i dont know how cardboard is going to fit nicely on her head either, but ill reserve judgement for a more completed picture
>there's a way with hairspray to get big sausage curls without them being gross, unmoving, tangled messes
Curious, what's this method you know about? Everything I've ever read says that you need some kind of stiffener to keep them from collapsing under their weight.
Peridot's nose? I get contouring for Opal or Pearl, but Peridot? I guess I don't get it her nose isn't any more unique than Lapis. As for Jasper I've seen maybe 3 who attempted the full lips and defined eyes. I think it makes a huge difference, but I don't think it makes or breaks a costume just a detail to appreciate when it is done.
this gives me a bit more confidence to wear rose again. id gotten several comments on how rose was 'at least twice my size', but she never looked that huge to me. on another note, why dont the fat rose quartz cosplayers do her pregnant form? they might have to pad their stomachs to give it a firmer look, but you can get away with not having a very defined figure that way
As someone with a defined waist and small torso who wears a 6, I disagree - most people with arms and particularly boobs that big are not going to cram into an 8. I'm in the camp who thinks that anyone can cosplay rose no matter what their size, but the show's animation really does not strike me as a US size medium.
Dude, I'm a size 8 in US sizes - a UK 12 - and my arms and boobs are the biggest part of my body. I personally think she's bigger than that, but as far as cosplayers go, a size 8 could look really good as Rose.
IMO Rose looks like a size 18 to me but that's because she's an amazon (at least 5'11+) and has proportions akin to Greg, who is canonically big.
There's no way Rose is less than a size 14, but I don't think it would look necessarily weird if someone size 8-14 would cosplay her if they had the height and some chub to them.
I mean there's really no way to come to an agreement on this, especially when US sizing is all over the place (I can wear a range of size 4 through 10 tops depending on what store I'm shopping at). Like I said, I think anyone should cosplay Rose if they want to, but I personally think of her as having some chub.
When the fuck has /cgl/ ever endorsed the first thing you said though, we're a bunch of sandy bitches who value accuracy above all else (well, second to quality and overall apperance. But definitely over "how good it makes you feel")
Do you think /cgl/ is a big fan of fat cosplayers of specifically thin characters?
i fully advocate cosplaying whatever the fuck you want. mainly because i don't know a single person who cosplays for others to enjoy. It's just because they like whatever character.
Now if you're trying to be a "professional" cosplayer, and you're trying to make some kind of career out of it, yeah you should stick to characters that fit your body type. otherwise who really gives a shit?
I've been told I should cosplay Rose Quartz because I'm the eternal con-mom and admittedly a size 14 (well..10-14s because women's clothing sizing is never consistent).
While I'm not a fan of spending that much time on a big curly wig.... will people actually get a kick out of a 4ft11 girl cosplaying a 'giant woman'?
I've got Amethyst in my closet for a rainy day already, since she's my exact bodytype, but holy shit, i've done my time with bodypaint.
height is one of the most easily forgivable parts of cosplay, in my opinion. you can always wear super tall heels under your dress to give the illusion of more height, but ive seen plenty of shorter rose quartzes. getting the costume to look nice is a major priority over height, though. and about amethyst, try commissioning armsocks or making them yourself if you want. they save so much time and effort instead of bodypaint
I've been homestuck crap for 5 years. I'm real familiar with armsocks, but no one likes smearing paint over their face unless they absolutely have to.
Honeslty I'm asking to see if it would be entertaining to people to see a tiny Rose. I cosplay Equius sometimes, just because people find it pretty funny when he gets called up at shoots.
Sewing the dress isn't going to be the tricky part, that I know I can do. It's that giant fucking wig.
i cant tell if this is better or worse than craft foam wig peridot
this makes me want to cry, I genuinely want to help them make a better cosplay
this is just too much
yep. I used to mix ben nye well enough for grey when I was a young babbystuck (the old 1 light grey 1 white of the tiny lil disks), before falling in love with mehron. And since mehron doesn't have a nice purple, i figure I'll do ben nye again and suffer a bit with the oiliness of it when i do decide to wear her, just to have a decent colour.
Waterbase anything always seems to be a bitch though :/
Many people on /cgl/ do. I value aesthetics above everything else, although I'm not really the type to judge people about it; not in public, at least. Point being, for many people, a good cosplay, coord or whatever is about matching things properly.
yeah, ive noticed /cgl/ is favored more towards what looks nice rather than what's perfectly canon. there was a nice opal a couple of threads ago that had the wrong color body paint and didn't look like opal face or body-wise, but her bow and costume was really well made so she got a lot of compliments
I'm not 100% sure yet. Rose's specifically shouldn't have much problem if you just use lots of hairspray (carefully) and heat, provided you don't try to pull too much hair into them. They aren't quite long enough to pull the curl fully out.
If that doesn't work, as a bit more permanent solution, I want to try combing extra clear silicone through the forelocks, and the wrap it around a plastic bottle or something. Once again, I'm not 100% sure, and me and my friends are going to do some tests (we've been saving all of our drill curl styling to do together as a group). I'll let y'all know how they turn out, though!
Yeah I noticed this too. I find this very weird. Like for example people here seem to prefer heavy feminine eye makeup for SU characters even if it makes the cosplayer's ace look nothing like the character's. Not saying people shouldn't wear eye makeup, just that you guys seem to just want everyone to be "pretty" instead of canon.
There's a lot of other options though, even if you're just stuck with the shitty hancock/joann bridal section. There's a local store near me that carries duchess satin for about 8/yd, so I have to wonder if you could just buy it online too. Shiny satin rustles my jimmies something fierce.
I'm being hounded to do Rose which I'm not keen on after doing three costumes from the show already I don't want to wander into Hanari territory and cosplay everyone. I agree with you I don't see Rose's dress as a satin, but when I say duchess I'm referencing the 100% silk satin which isn't as light or shiny as poly satin. I've bought duchess satin from Mood and it was $54/yard, but I wouldn't pay that for cosplay I'm not competing with.
That artist also did some amazing armoured gems that I'd love to see cosplayed.
Cowbuttcrunchies on tumblr. Her Ruby cosplay is nice too.
No, just found it in the tags and thought they looked like they were having fun.
peridots hair gains more hair like structure lately but I only see more rigid wigs being made
Guys, is there any way to make a Stevonnie cosplay stand out? When her character was revealed, my friends kept telling me to do it so I eventually did it, but it feels like there's nothing to pull it out of cheap closet cosplay. I know some people are making Steven's shield/Rose's sword to carry. Anything else? Also, is it cool to self post so I can get some advice on making my wig more accurate?
im waiting on my morpheus from arda to arrive for my peridot wig. im thinking since its so thick it wont really need a base like this but otherwise im not very sure how to style it so that it looks like peridots hair but also not so stiff
the weapons are definitely a great start, especially if they're good quality. i havent actually seen any stevonnies with both weapons, as much as its seen in fanart. other than that, just make sure it's as accurate as you can be with a very big wig. so many people cut corners with stevonnie that just putting in a good amount of effort would make you stand out. and go ahead, self post away! id love to see some cool stevonnie wigs
her hair looks different in each episode, depending on who draws it. it was looking like it had some splitting/showing individual strands in 'when it rains' but in 'back to the barn' it looked just as stiff as it was in other episodes. it mostly depends on who's drawing her, it looks like
not a cosplay or for one (unless a friend wants to borrow it), but i made a little robonoid today.
that wig has some good volume- i would straighten it though, and go back and hand curl it to add waves. stevonnie's hair doesn't seem to have tight ringlets, more like big curls or loose waves. with simple cosplays like this, its important to get even minor details right. i would shorten the length of the blue shirt so that you can see the bottom of steven's shirt, and shorten the sleeves on steven's shirt. other than that, not much to recommend. a pair of dance tights can really help with cosplays that show a lot of leg since it even out your skin tone a lot, but plenty of people go without them. i like your gem though- is it glowing?
Thanks for the advice! My gem isn't glowing. I followed squidwardprivilege's tutorial on tumblr for plastic gems. I like that's it kinda cartoony and does have that "glow" in all my pictures, but, and this could just be because of the plastic I used, the edges of the gem aren't really defined so it just looks like a circle from a distance.
Im thinking of doing a lapis cosplay but im honestly not down for painting myself ever again after my hs cosplay days, I dont really care about being the best are mosy accurate for cosplay but I'm fairly deceny at makeup
So my plan is to just do fairy blue heavy (but noy skanky blue eyeshadow obviously) with some blue hinted shading and controuring
Is this a terrible idea?
It's not terrible, but it's not a good idea either. It's not like people are going to give you shit about it (except maybe behind your back on here), so just do whatever you feel comfortable with.
as long as you dont mind not getting attention and are ok with criticism, go for it. people who dont paint rarely get their photo taken or much attention payed to them, but if youre ok with that, then do whatever you want. painting yourself doesn't have to be an ordeal though- im pretty sure youre familiar with armsocks and tights if youve been into homestuck. why not do that and just paint your face?
You can also order duchess from Vogue for $9 a yard. It might also work in an Angel Skin satin if the hems were serged or rolled footed to give that petal look. I'm not a huge fan of the tulle/organza look for it.
Saw this on my dash, very nice but
from what I see the dress looks really well constructed. Any full body pictures?
But I agree on the eyebrows. The nails don't go along well either.
Requesting some con-crit (emphasis on the constructive) on my Opal makeup? The wig is a work in progress, and I'll make sure to glue down my brows next time. I'm pretty happy with it but I don't want to end up a train-wreck in this thread.
it doesnt look bad enough to warrant being laughed at in this thread or anything, but i cant really say for certain since this is only a makeup shot, but here's some ideas. bright blue contacts can help bring some oomph to your look, contouring your nose to look slimmer could help, as well as contouring your lips to look fuller, since she has amethyst's full lips. maybe some blush and eyeshadow too, provided they are in colors that look nice with your paint.
Rose Quartz is fat. Fat.
If she were thin and a fat person cosplayed her, you'd be bitching. Stop complaining when there are already very thin characters with pretty good designs in this show.
i agree- plus, a thin person would look dwarfed and pretty ridiculous with a huge wig and huge dress, like pic related. i feel like rose's size balances out the parts of her costume that are unrealistically big. not saying someone has to be obese to cosplay her or that medium sized people shouldnt cosplay her, but her design is obviously made with a bigger frame in mind, just like pearl's design is designed with her very thin frame in mind.
tell her she makes a great rose quartz, but maybe tone down the eyebrows a little? or at least make them pink so they don't look so harsh against her wig. she did a great job besides that, though
For my face I mixed ben nye lime green with some yellow and white and for my neck and body I mixed some pax to match it. :)
I'll be remaking the wig in a few months probably and I'll make a tutorial then but it's pretty much just foam base + fabric with wig hair, fabric glue, and got2b. Here it is before I put the hair on it: http://36.media.tumblr.com/d3d08b9d1e63f77b690b62cacc483c58/tumblr_npxd6uAgv91tkmwdoo4_1280.jpg
and I pretty much followed the tutorials here: http://malindachan.deviantart.com/gallery/37164049/Wig-tutorials
This method would work well for other SU wigs too. I made a Pearl wig in a similar manner a while back and I'm going to be making a Rose wig for fun when I have some more money.
Liking this Pearl I saw in the tag on tumblr?? Ignoring the spear, the overall appearance is just really aesthetically pleasing to me for some reason.
Found this one too. I feel like her face and wig look better in the profile shot though.
when you remake it can you please leave some loose hair at the front so it looks morelike hair and you als o don't have those gaps at the sides that make it look like a helmet
pls it will be perfect
Sauce? I can't seem to find her either on tumblr (the tags page is really shitty to navigate without an account) or in a reverse image source.
I really like the shape and color of her wig.
This is the first pearl I have seen who has tried to do a false nose and I am kinda digging it
This might be the worst Lapis I've seen in awhile.
After her regeneration, she does have an indent, but then again so does her pre-regeneration form. The cosplayer here made their wig too big at the top I feel, so if it wasn't so disproportional I think it'd be fine.
You could always do the school uni version of Lapis. It's super cute, and I don't think you'd get any flock for not painting yourself up.
this is probably, bait, but the problem with that garnet a while back is that she painted her skin brown. as you can see in >>8669725, white garnets look fine and dont get flak if they paint themselves garnet's actual color and not human brown. are you really that dumb to not see the difference?
because the connie didn't alter her skin tone or anything to be connie- she's just a black girl cosplaying connie. this is literally the only black connie i've seen, too. there are way more white people cosplaying garnet, which is why there's more of a response. and why wouldn't you just specify in your original post that you were talking about tumblr? yeah, tumblr is full of hypocrites, but it just sounds like your backpedaling.
It definitely is super accurate to the cartoon, but as we should have fucking learned by now with this shit and Homestuck and every other cartoon fandom cosplay community, accurate to the cartoon doesn't make a good cosplay.
It just looks bad. It looks strange. Bringing a cartoon to life means that you should keep it true to life, otherwise it fails miserably and just looks off. There's a reason why these things are made as cartoons and not as live action shows, after all.
this is why i dont like when people go on about 'rose doesn't wear a lot of makeup!! cosplayers need to wear less makeup because her eyes arent super glammed up!' when a cosplayer wears everyday/minimal makeup, it looks bad. even if she were prettier, it just lacks so much oomph.
when i come to /cgl/ i see tons of threads about cosplaying your body type. now you're complaining because fat girls finally found a character that isn't fat for a joke, and you're pissy that skinny girls could do it way better and aren't?
like just admit you hate fat people. its that easy.
i feel like this one is close
this is such an ambitious cosplay that you can't set a deadline for and it looks like they did. it just looks unfinished, like an extra few weeks tweaking it would've made a huge difference.
she stands roughly 8 feet tall, and the t-shirt greg gave her is an xxl and it fits her rather well. so take that info and run with it.
stop taking a lage woman that multiple in show characters have referred to as lage, giant, and huge and ty to say she's thin.
I wasn't saying that at all- she's obviously a large woman, both height and weight wise. All I was saying is that she still has the ideal hourglass proportions- even though she's big, she still has a nice figure
it looks a bit messy but i think the idea is good? having a little bit of a line there seems to make the visor look better than the ones other people have done when they do light makeup underneath
I like the idea of the lace but the execution is just meh.
Turns out that amazing Alexandrite from earlier did have the shades. I guess she just wasn't wearing them while walking around the con, which makes sense. 10/10.
Has anyone seen any cosplays of Pearl in her flight suit? I'm considering doing it myself now that we've got screenshots of it in daylight.
I'm short (4'10 to be specific), and have proportions similar to tiny Peridot, though my bust is slightly larger. I could fix that with a minimizer, probably, but would a tiny Peridot cosplay be acceptable as canon and accurate if well done? Pic related. I saw many comments after "Catch and Release" aired that it would now be a lazy cosplay, but I feel that it is still moderately challenging to make her look clean even without her limb enhancers. What do ya'll think?
Im on the same boat as you but im doing her limbless version regardless of what the other anons say because I love Peridot a lot haha
As long as it looks nice and neat, I dont see why there should be a problem
Make a nice wig and all is good. I don't see a problem either.
I'll switch between her limb enhancers and the new form as well during the con to be able to move around more comfortably.
My fear is that people won't recognise it since SU isn't popular here and on TV it's FAR behind. (I think they just introduced Peridot?)
So I'm prepared for people thinking I haven't finished the cosplay and/or be mad about me being a spoiler on legs.
Holy shit I didn't notice at first
All the gems sort of have monoboob going on so a sports bra would give you a better canonical silhouette anyway. I think neoprene would be good for getting sharp edges, especially on the dark green parts.
Dark brown or black imo, her eyes are strikingly plain.
I only found 2 when skipping through, but oh man the Ruby and Sapphire lazily pawing at the air is hilarious.
i really wish they would solidify how peridot's hair looks. it makes styling a wig even harder than it has to be.
I know. That's why I picked something more like in Friend Ship back when I added the foam base to my wig.
It's my personal favorite since it simply looks more like a diamond.
Guys, there are character sheets available. Use them.
on topic of peridot wigs. right from my dashboard
They actually look nice- I can see how you'd dislike them if you're more into the stiff helmet-y look for peridot's hair, but they're well done at least. They're a nice compromise if you want a softer, more hair-like approach to the wig
since we were talking about peridot visors a while ago, do you think a gradient like this would be a good idea?
i agree, people are going to use it as a cop out to get out of doing one of the hardest parts of her outfit. there will be good non-limb enhanced peridots, of course, but there's also going to be a plethora of shitty peridots that will cosplay it because it will be easier and can claim to be just as canon while putting in half the work
how does she have 10k followers?
i wish i could agree, anon, but there have just been too many bad peridot wigs
