>>8677840 They are like the storm troopers of anime cons. you know aside from actual stormtroopers. really only impressive in a large group. and not a gaggle of random cosplayers that all decided to pose for pictures.
Ok so Cosplay characters that should go away.
>Inuyasha especially any variant "origional character" versions
>Chi Are people still doing this?
>The Joker / Harley EEEEnough already!
>Miku Aka the new Chi
>Homesuck Go away with your body paint and bad comics
>Deadpool It just isn't impressive any more guys.
>The doctor Unless you make one of the older doctors that isnt a costume it's normal clothing
>Zombie -insert character here- Hey internet, hollywood. you've done it I'm done with zombies. they aren't scary or frightening any more. you have to wait for a new cultural wave and then theme your zombies with those fears. we have reached peek zombie this generation.
>actually just a superhero costume It has come to the point where you can flat out buy pretty decent adult size superheros off the rack.
>Wolverine Unless that's yellow spandex you go into the same bin as the rest of the 5-minuets at walmart costumes
>Finn If I don't say it no one will. Stop dressing up as fin. We all know you bought the hat from the artist's alley.
>>8677908 I have been doing this since like, 97. around 2001 you couldn't swing a dead blonde woman around without hitting 12 Spike costumes, none of them any good. Or a Vash the stampede. And Sailor moon and Misty have/will never disappear. I give those a pass now because they are more a gateway cosplay than an annoyance.
>>8677920 >buy pretty decent adult size superheros off the rack. You can buy Attack on Titan uniforms at Hot Topic, too. They come in the cheap Halloween costume bags and everything. Isn't it great?
Tired of seeing: >"fem" versions of things that already have canonical female versions >cardboard box gundams
Oh, and the run-of-the-mill TF2 cosplayers. There's so, SO much room to get creative with the classes. People have done every variation/idea/crossover in the world with sailor scouts for example, PLEASE do something cool with TF2. Even if its just wrapping up in bandages and putting blood all over yourself. They are mercs, after all.
I got to the party late on this franchise. I really enjoyed AC1. I also do historical reenactment. So I was making a costume using as many period techniques and materials as I could. It was all linen and distressed, hours spent tooling leather and making a glove that would hide my finger. Then I went to a local con before it was finished. with so many of them around the parts now sit in a box in my closet.
>>8678254 Sounds like your cosplay would've easily blown the others away in terms of accuracy and appearance. I say go for it. Never too many well done AC cosplays. It'd be a nice respite from the raging attention whores that do sexy versions of Ezio for no reason,
>>8678309 Love live ruined cosplay. All these people just buy shitty costumes from Taobao none of them even make the outfits. It always looks like shit 99% of the time because the LL cosplayers are so fucking lazy.
>>8678348 Ran out of money and motivation around the same time. then saw a half million assassins around a tiny florida con. Killed the motivation to be another one of the masses. Then I saw the man at arms hidden blade build.
>>8678351 >>8678311 >>8678254 if it's any consolation i am one of those people who will praise the shit outta someone for accuracy and details like this. These little things are what make a cosplay so much better for me. i will fangirl over touches like this and make sure to get lots of pictures. so just wanted to let you know there's people out there who's con day can be made because someone put that extra mile in
Any Vocaloid Cosplay, Black Butler, this Titan thingy and fat girls (i mean real fatties, not chubby ppl but real landwales) wearing any kind of revealing cosplay, keep that to a fetish party girls and not to a place where there might be children.
>>8678631 >But yes, the most people around this fandom are lazy girls only want to pretend be cute idols.
Why is that an issue? No really, why do you care? It's not as if you wouldn't complain if they made it because then you'd probably shit on their poor sewing skills. If someone wants to be a cute idol for a day in a bought costume, why the fuck do you care?
>>8678757 Please. I love Love Live, I love idols as much as the next girl. There's only so much you can give a shit about them. At the end of the day, everyone loves them because they're cute. Whether or not they think so because of the songs, their looks, whether they identify with them, whether they want to fuck them, whether they want to be them, it all boils down to them being cute. There's just not enough drama and shit for there to be some deep underlying reason for someone to claim "no-one should cosplay my waifu because they don't understand my DEEP LOVE FOR THEM, it's so much deeper and stronger than your pathetic love". At the end of the day, we're all weebs, we all like this shit because it's cute, that's all there is to it. Don't be so high and mighty about it.
Sooooooo......basically this whole thread us saying that they're tired of every costume. Or anything popular, or anything someone likes that became popular, or anything that is now retro, or anything from a store. Clearly only people that spend months on a costume is worthy.
>>8678152 I knew a girl who did that, she got pissed off that no one recognized her and thought she was Malfoy/Harry potter/ Harry Potter wearing a Slythern robe. >"I'm carrying around twizzlers for god's sake!!!! It's a joke from the play!!!"
>>8678664 After an hour of searching, I finally found them
on fb they are Arthammer LARP Workshop
so pretty >On topic Tutu's in cosplays where they don't belong. Typically overweight cosplayers do this. But worse, is it's not some nice tutu, no it's the shitty, weird layer no-sew tutu's that they found on pinterest.
Anything League of Legends, Disney crossovers, Sailor Moon crossovers, "punk" versions of characters, Sonico, guys "ironically" dressed in female costumes but they are all muscled out or have their beard still, Deadpool anything, "sexy armor" versions of characters that make literally zero sense, etc.
I basically hate everything that's trendy or popular.
>>8678351 i heard of someone doing this before (perhaps even here on /cgl/) and they said by the end of the day their finger was really sore from being bent so long. if you do it, free your finger every once in awhile! I love AC and AC cosplays, I just wish more dudes cos'd the male Assassins. Besides Rick Boer I always see girls as Ezio/Altair and fem!Assassins (aka tits out), which is getting a bit annoying for me. I also want more Élise de la Serre's who actually use the right hair color.
Everything that is popular of course. But to me the biggest offender are "sexy" cosplays. Especially females cosplaying male characters. It's pretty much always "tehee I'm wearing a red bikini and a cap, I'm Mario :)" no fuck you you're just a lazy attention whore.
>>8679331 Not that anon, but even though Love Live isn't particularly deep it pulled me out of a depressive state of a couple years and rekindled my passion for singing and dancing, plus I find the story of 9 girls working hard to achieve their dream really inspiring. It sounds silly but LL has a deep personal meaning for me, so it's... not so much upsetting as disheartening to come across people who just like it because it's cute.
Unlike that anon though I'm happy to see so many Love Live cosplays. The last con I was at it was everywhere, and it was really nice to see something I really care about be recognised so widely.
So what IS the point then? I've seen nothing but a bunch of salty ass haters whine about what is essentially an adult version of a children's game (dress up) and how much they hate this or that for whatever reason they have.
I guess I just don't quite get it, why be like that at all? Just be happy you have people that are like you and have a similar interest that most of the world finds odd.
>>8680696 Nobody cares, no really just get over it. People will always cosplay things just because they kinda like it and groups will mostly buy the costumes because getting 9 people to look the same is otherwise nearly impossible.
>>8679331 I am not? I don't even like Love Live, I was just clarifying their point. Their reasoning for finding that annoying was about on the same level as everyone else's ITT so whatever, it's fine to find shit obnoxious.
>>8680800 It's less that and more that I just wouldn't recommend it unless you REALLY like one of the girls already, and more specifically, until there's better outfits. I don't particularly dislike their first single outfits, but they're not..great. Basically at this point in time you'll probably come off more as "FIRST!!!!" more then anything.
Not exactly. Once you've been to a couple cons, you start to notice a huge surge of certain types of costumes, most of which are badly done, some of which encourage people to behave like artists, some of which are just plain abysmal. These are the ones we're dissing, not just the ones that are popular or common.
Robin from FE/Smash. I like seeing the ones who put some thought into it, especially class variants and non-default hair styles, but for every one of those there's 5 with no wig, just the storebought coat, and sneakers underneath.
>>8680975 Yeah, no. I bought the game on launch. The fanbase started going downhill when the developers started taking fan content, ignoring their original style guidelines, and making a shitty lolrandom storyline.
>>8680585 I'm really worried about the undertale cosplay we're gonna see. I can guarantee it's gonna be 90% Undyne and Mettaton, since body paint and relatively simple outfits, especially Undyne out of her armor. I'm considering cosplaying Muffet, but there's a lot of things I need to figure out about that first.
>>8680230 I see Deadpools acting stupid on social media stuff all the time, but I've never actually encountered one in person. At the cons I've been to it's always the Hetalia cosplayers who act like awful children.
>>8681623 >don't want anything out-of-date >set in the 50's
Alright, that's partially their fault. Would love to have seen how cool TF2 would've been if they stuck with a 1950's aesthetic, though. Spy's probably the only one sticking anywhere near it.
>>8681070 Not that Anon but they're the complete definition of "closet cosplay," minus the female tentacle hair which you can just buy anyways. Maybe if they cosplayed the shop owners, they'd be more interesting. But fuck me if that game isn't annoyingly straight outta PS1 90's Nickelodeon, just replace the ink with slime
>>8680769 I've seen at local cons guys with beards in shitty Party City costumes get asked by photographers to do shoots for free. What actually good costume now doesn't get time for a shoot? It was funny like 3 years ago.
>>8682515 because people play it and have fun, or people watch it and have fun? it's perfectly fine if it's not your cup of tea but just because you don't like it doesn't mean other people aren't allowed to. something something opinions something something
>>8682333 If you stuck to the original design guidelines, you could do any of those ideas as 50's/60's sci-fi VERY easily. .. but that picture is from the Deus Ex tie-in a few years ago. Look at their guns. It's not 50's at all, it's fucking cyberpunk.
>>8682261 Exactly, I have a friend who can't really bind because of her chest size and medical condition, and it's sad that she feels pressured to bind when guys like that run around and get so much positive attention.
>>8682319 This too. It's disheartening to be ignored in favour of a sloppy "lol so funny xD" cosplay
>>8677902 Yes, we've all seen the Joss Whedon Comic Con panel video. Inuyasha cosplayers aren't that common place. I think I've seen like 1 ever 4 conventions I've attended this year and I've been to 14 so far :/
Slave Leia mash ups needs to burn. It's not clever, it's boring and unimaginative. I'm all for people wanting to empower themselves by looking sexy or making something they like, but it is a tiring thing.
>Super Hero Costume Specifically Jean Gray Cosplayers who buy the same fucking outfit online where the boots are a part of the body suit. It looks shitty, anyone can buy one and just look sexy and get attention. I'd like to see a solid Phoenix that doesn't "Pout and use place her finger on her temple while holding out her other hand."
i know its been said but i scrolled past a sexy cosplayers thread on /b/ and honestly i am so sick of girls taking regular characters and sexyfying them. i'm also just sick of sexy cosplays, because conventions are generally family events. why are you walking around in a thong with a belt strap covering your nipples around children? it's just annoying that i see so many intricate, amazing cosplays but they aren't talked about as much as, say, jessica nigri or other girls who just threw on a bra and some panties and a wig. i'm sick of looking at a list of top __ pokemon cosplays and nigri's bare ass is taking up the top 3 spots purely because she's sexy.
>>8681003 Not seeing how that's bait; it's pretty true that the girls are over designed. The one sided bun doesn't look like it makes sense or flows into the hair either, like kotori's loop did; if you watch the pv it looks like they just plopped a ball on top of her hair
>>8678652 >attack on titan cosplayers there is so many and there all store bought
I resisted that shit for a year before I decided fuck it all and made mine.
I'm tall so I knew I wasn't going to find a harness or a jacket the proper size. So I made my shit thinking it would be so much better that way. I'm a killer seamstress and it turned out really well that people think I bought my stuff so I'm like why the fuck did I even try.
What I want to see is AoT people TRY. Put some velcro under your leg harness to keep it in place, don't wear baggy ass pants, STYLE YOUR FUCKING WIG, iron your coat. Because so many of them buy their stuff they put no effort in anywhere else. If I buy something I know I got off easy and I better try hard everywhere else to make up for it. Why do these people do the opposite?
Look at this. Only the Levi has his shit on right. 1 out of 9 people look right. ONE.
>>8683335 >it's just annoying that i see so many intricate, amazing cosplays but they aren't talked about as much as, say, jessica nigri or other girls who just threw on a bra and some panties and a wig. >i'm sick of looking at a list of top __ pokemon cosplays and nigri's bare ass is taking up the top 3 spots purely because she's sexy.
Been living with this for like 7 or 8 years now bro. I feel ya.
When I started cosplaying I was the odd one out at only 17 years old. Everyone I met was 23+. Most were nearing 30. I couldn't wait till I would be older & knew as much as they did and was respected for it.. I got to 26 and was just getting good at the craft when the "me first" shit started up. Like people cosplaying Rikku from FFX before it even came out. I was like...ok I see the appeal in that. Challenging yourself to make it good and fast. Then I realized it was just for the attention it got you. Then came the sexy cosplayers. Lots of people did sexy cosplay already but it wasn't the ONLY thing they did. They had scads of other types of costumes and 2-5 sexy ones. But the new sexy ones were only wearing sexy, people started getting boobs jobs, and being featured as guest of honor at cons cause boobs.
At that point I knew looking forward to being a respected older person in fandom wasn't going to happen. Sex had taken over and once it does there is really no going back.
>>8680055 Not gonna lie since I'm not into TF2 and didn't look at the quoted post I initially thought you meant "girl scouts" as in like... 6-10 year old girls walking around cons twerking on people and I was really, really confused as to why this was happening at cons.
>>8684986 I get where they were coming from... They're short and wanted to seem taller for a group cosplay but.. Damn those shoes are so ugly.
>>8684990 In the manga, the straps and boots were black. Fun fact, Mikasa's scarf was also black. I've been tempted to do a manga-accurate version, but I know I would get shat on at cons so I'm just sticking the regular uniform every once in awhile.
I'm an AoT cosplayer, but I have to agree, some of it has to stop... I don't even mind store-bought (as long as it's taobao and not that Hot Topic bullshit) because I will admit half of mine is bought because I'm a pretty crappy seamstress and can only make simple things. But I modded my harnesses to hell and back to make them look nice, meanwhile some people won't even bother even ATTEMPTING to keep them up. And seeing cosplayers without the harness kills me a little everytime I see it. Just... Please, put some effort in people.
Pretty much everything I said above for lovelive, also. I have a friend who's also really into and she helps me make some stuff, but other things we decide to buy since we're doing a large group of 5-9 girls.
>>8684959 Well anon, let me fix that for both of us: I hate seeing Yoko cosplays unless it's one of her more obscure outfits.
There's always that one basic bitch who makes Yoko despite never having watched the series and just slaps on red flames on a black bra, puts on the gloves and a store-bought pair of leather shorts, inaccurate belt, a pre-styled wig from eBay and to top it off a cardboard cutout skull pin. Sometimes their boyfriend makes the gun for them. Bonus points if they have tacky ass tattoos on their chest and/or sides. But tee hee she's so iconic and she has such a cute design! And I don't have to put any effort into it at all! It's not like Yoko has a million other outfits to make, I'm doing the pre-timeskip one because I know shit about the whole character and want attention!
Disney Princesses also make me throw up, especially if they're some JNig-influenced armor take of them.
>Love live and nothing from the cards or variant outfits. Just the same old one outfit >Attack on titans >Homestruck >Me!Me!Me! and that other video whatever Girl now >Marvel with only Deadpool/Wolverine >DC with only Power girl/Harley/Batfam only >Sexy version of X
>>8689112 This one. Only this one or the school outfit because they are easy to buy and simple. I wouldn't mind the pretty card ones but most cons I've been to with LL cosplayers they just do this one. A group of girls were even dancing in the lobby too for no reason.
if you choose to represent an obscure character you absolutely cannot risk fucking up. if, cosplaying a fairly popular character you make a mistake-- it won't matter, because who hasn't attempted this character and failed before.
>>8689348 But picking a costume that everyone wears doesn't?
>>8689358 I don't agree on this. If you pick Attack on Titan cosplay you will be noticed by the masses because you're in a popular cult group. Same with Homestruck. Compare that to something like picture related that nobody knows what the hell it is. Only the small section of people would watch it will and the other people would take pictures because it's 'cool' or cute but that's it.
Also Love Live isn't obscure in the first place so even if you pick an obscure outfit you will still get noticed because it's cute and Love live. You just won't be part of the hivemind/attention whores.
>>8689526 >I don't agree on this.
Except that everyone and their grandmother is tired of AoT cosplays so you'll be ignored
>>8689559 Except by the AoT fandom and people who cater to then. I should post that picture of all of the AoT cosplayers who went to one con I attended and they covered half of the convention center entrance. Tons of people were taking pictures of them.
If I cosplay some obscure cosplay nobody is going to notice and I wouldn't even care because I'm doing something I like not because it's popular or I'm going to get/want attention.
>>8689943 yeah idk what cons you're going to buddy, but i see a million ash's at every con, and a billion pictures of ash (or misty or brock, but still a main very recognizable character) my point still stands. if you want a better one, there's over 700 pokemon but i still cosplayed pikachu because its the most recognizable cosplay and as much as you want to bitch about "attention whores", the only way you're gonna get well known in the cosmunity is to have your cosplays spread around, and unless you cosplayed an incredibly hard to pull off side character/outfit and did it well, your side and background character cosplays aren't going to get as much attention and won't get spread around as much as the ones of main characters and main outfits because that's what people recognize and that's what people are going to want to take pictures of.
>>8694554 You haven't been to other boards have you? Or living in a bubble? There's already a ton of "Can Saitama beat Superman" threads all over because of the anime. People are asking Death Battle to make a OPM battle. The manga has been out for years senpai. The anime only brought out the weebs. So except to see shitty bald caps and home made outfits along with Umaru.
Not sure why me pointing that out makes me an anime hipster.
>Deadpool Never mind the oversaturation, the costume seems to make people think they have an obligation to be an obnoxious shit. Will probably get worse with the movie's release.
>Harley Quinn It's old, it's tired, and it's just gonna get worse now that the people who whored her up have an official whored-up look to use thanks to Suicide Squad. I don't mind classic Harley so much because seeing one is so rare, but a lot of those even wear these fetishy plastic/latex looking suits.
>Attack on Titan It aired two years ago people. The fad is over. Give it a rest already. No one wants to see your misshapen lardass in ill-fitting white jeans anyway. Plus most of the uniforms are store-bought and poorly worn anyway. Those straps on the legs shouldn't be all askew and loosely hanging.
>Kirito/SAO See: Attack on Titan. They also tend to be obnoxiously unaware of their surroundings with those weapons.
>>8695659 Popular, or used to be popular(?) Webcomic. Fandom known for being obnoxious teenagers who never seal their body paint. Biggest signs include gray (unsealed) body paint and orange horns. I haven't seem many posts on tumblr so I'm assuming they're sorta dead fandom but they used to plague the cons I frequent.
I like Splatoon a lot, but a lot of Splatoon cosplayers at MCM got me rustled. The ones cosplaying NPCs were fine, lots of cute Squid Sisters, but the ones cosplaying Inklings were obnoxious. So many of them were walking around with rollers, which are massive, and pushing them in front of them so they take up way too much space and are a bitch to get around. And most of them looked shit too.
Any cosplay that requires an overly large weapon, basically. Some bitch got salty that I knocked her Cloud Strife sword out of her hand, but it's not my fault it's fucking 2 feet wide and 7 feet long jutting out behind you. Same with that SAO main protagonist but I mainly don't like that because he's a shit character.
Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy are too overplayed, and it's just an excuse for out of shape lasses to wear horrible skin tight latex and bare their arses in front of children.
Steven Universe, always the same archetypes playing the characters too. Chubby little dykes playing Steven, Auschwitz mode dykes playing that one with the pointy nose, and fat hipster dykes playing Steven Universe's fat mam.
I think people who cosplay as Deadpool do so because they want to be obnoxious assholes. And it lets them all recognize each other, meet up, and anonymously cause trouble.
I love Deadpool, but I can see that costume getting banned from conventions.
You know, I've seen tons of sexy Harleys and Arkham nurse Harleys, but I don't think I've seen a single nu52 Harley.
>>8695660 A great webcomic with a horrid fandom. Cosplays require bodypaint, and are often done by 14-year-olds high on pixie sticks who don't know what sealant are and think nothing of glomping without asking or warning and getting their body paint over everything.
It did give us both Prequel and Undertale, though.
>>8696040 I guess it could be argued that the creator being involved with Homestuck is what gave him the ability to launch a successful Kickstarter, but I think he would have made Undertale no matter what. Megalovania is in Undertale too which makes people think there's a Homestuck connection, but it was in a romhack he did ages ago before it was in Homestuck.
>>8696081 >Also any cosplay where the character is light skinned and the person cosplaying is black >Both are VERY disrespectful to the character and the person who created it, and anyone doing any of those things should be ashamed of themselves for being an asshole.
Not this shit again. So I guess you or anyone else shouldn't cosplay any series that has Japanese characters because they are not Japanese right? Because the creator made them Japanese and someone not Japanese doing it is disrespectful!!
>>8696483 More like 0/10 because you dont know what the fuck you are talking about. How could a asian character in most anime not be light skinned you twat? Blacks look nothing like the characters 99% of the time because most anime characters are just generically light skinned.
You're dressing up as cartoon characters, anon, it's pretty rare that anyone actually looks like the fucking character beyond a superficial level. A black person in a well-made, good costume of a light skinned character is a good cosplay, regardless of how much that resemble them.
Who are black people supposed to cosplay? I can only think of two or three recognisable black characters in anime, tops.
>>8696816 >>8696081 >Most anime characters are just generically light skinned A few of them are dark skinned and Japanese. So unless you are Japanese anon or the creator of said anime you can't cosplay jack shit either. The fact that you mentioned 'black people' instead of 'people in general' shows that you are the one that's ignorant or this is obvious bait.
Go back to tumblr or whatever place you came from.
>>8696988 Yea, and black person trying to look like a white character doesnt even look superficially like the character so they shouldn't do it. And there are enough dark skinned characters for them to use if you watch anime at all.
>>8697098 Yea, so the blacks should stick to the dark skinned characters, no shit. And I say black people because they are the ones who usually make a character that is supposed to be light skinned look like garbage. But ignoring that, you sound like you don't even know the basis of how the anime character design came to be if you think it isn't based on caucasian features, so please shut the fuck up if you are that ignorant.
You make a character look like garbage because you are fat or just don't look like them, do you think the creators would accept that? Fucking no, no one wants someone to shit all over something they made.
Yeah, if you want more photos of you to be taken, you would want to be the default version.
I cosplayed the senbonzakura version of Miku well my friend went as default Miku and she was asked for pictures and recognized constantly well only a few people knew i was Miku, even with both of us next to each other, with the same hair and makeup style done.
Haha when you wear any other outfit Miku has, you kind of see the ratio of people that actually know the character vs the 'She's the anime icon" thing.
