Honestly though, I've been thinking about giving up on art lately. I don't really see myself having a future with it

It seems like the more I hear about how shitty the life of an animator is, the more motivation I lose.
i get you are going some slice of life anime vibe, anon. i would suggest learning how to draw things more realist then go into a specialized art style. Same with noodle people.
I'm not an artist. I don't want to be. I'm an anthropologist and I have no work since finishing editing a bunch of papers for an associate. You stop telling me to quite procrastinating and go kick the Joker's ass.
I have two questions.
1. How bad of a habit is it to use other artists work/style to use as a reference?

well it depends i assume you use their work for colors or composition purposes, technical stuff thats good, now say you are using a cartoonist's work for your anatomy studies then you have a problem, also dont sketch with that horrible cyan color i can barely see the sketch

I'm making a rip-off of the fight between Hol Horse and Polnareff but with bara furfags.
I also ripped off the Wanted movie a little but it does seem just partial stuff.
Honest? Your design is fairly generic. It doesn't really has any distinguishable features from other stock characters.
The structure only seems to work on a 2D (read: flat) surface, which it's not really beneficial for character design. I like the color palette though. Shitty design, passable palette.
I know it seems rude, but criticism is there to help you improve your art, not to bash you or make you feel like shit.
I'll give you an extremely abridged advice. Have you seen the JoJonium covers? If you read JJBA, you'll notice that the characters in the covers look radically different from their original appearances.
My method is to take a generic design and exaggerate it by applying a concept that was not there in the first place and expand upon it.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but hey, you can always find something that it wasn't there.

i'm sure some of you have gone through this maybe it's because i'm not that good at drawing but how do you overcome the "it looks right" mentality when it is clearly wrong.
like when i'm drawing the picture and lookign back and forth at it and the refrence picture i can see visually no issues, although the face not appearing right does tell me something is wrong but when i focus more on the areas i think are wrong i see the lines match up perfectly.
i'll call it drawing dysmorphia because its the same with body dysmorphia. How do back the fuck up and realize no that line is wrong when my mind is making it appear properly.

I get this a lot. A few tricks you can try is holding it up backwards to a light, or to a mirror, or flip it upside down. If it's something that has shadows, you can also try just drawing the shadow areas.
yae i tried just shading it to figure out if i can tell then what is wrong but to no avaid. i shade by following the main lines and the underlying construction lines used to make the shape so this doesnt really help. ill try the mirror and flipping it upside down though.
also i can't draw female faces :( at least male faces i get semi right, females always come out masculine looking.
I'm an animator but I mostly just draw reference in 2d for 3d animation. It's kind of rough since all the stuff I'm drawing wont ever actually be seen though, but I guess that's completely different.

If you stop doing that thing, you'll be better.
Practice isn't really enough. I mean practice is good, but you have to challenge yourself as you do. You can go to goddamn Deviant art to see evidence of that. People who are too lazy to actually improve their efforts and fix their mistakes end up stagnating. Draw things you aren't comfortable doing, things that seem out of your league. Getting good at something is about getting your mistakes out of the way and the only way to do that is to challenge yourself.
The only real way to get better is simply to strive to get better. Take what you most dislike about your own art and work on improving it. Read a tutorial, a book, watch a demonstration. Don't like how your faces are turning out? find some you do like and figure out why you like them. Can't draw hands? Practice drawing hands from photos or just draw them until they feel right.
Point is there isn't a simple or easy way, you just gotta actually have the gumption to fucking do it.
Practice with a purpose. Think about what your art is lacking the most at the moment and then practice that. If you just "draw everyday" you'll end up practicing what's in your comfort zone eternally and probably learn bad habits and nothing else. The "draw this again" meme on deviantart is a grim reminder that artistic progression is not linear and you can easily pass into a new kind of horrible instead of actually improving if you don't use proper artbooks and such.

Nah I love drawing hands, I drew myself into a corner with the arms, I like hands open, slender or pointing so I left them out so I don't half-arse them.
Ass at shading. I've done pencil work all my life, so digital feels foreign. Any suggestion of type of shading? Nice motivation to start learning if I'm given a direction

nice faces. Get a tablet instead of a new scanner and start drawing digitally. It will expand your horizons, especially with all the erasin you do. Not an insult. I erase a lot too, but a good drawing tablet not only makes your coordination more razor sharp, it also lets you erase infinitely without ruining pages or going through erasers.
i disagree if he already erases like a mofo the transition to digital will aggravate that condition, the key to stop erasing so much is to stop trying to make everything perfect and get some confidence in your own work, not change to a different medium that lets you do that shit forever so you never learn
A fetish comic I am working on in progress.
If you use blue pencil for the underdrawing and graphite or ink for finished, When you scan the pic you can use Photoshop to get rid of the blue. By going to Hue/Saturation. Selecting Cyan and sliding brightness to 100 percent. Go to blue and do the same if the blue pencil doesn't completely go away.

They incredible, but I believe you should only get into them after a long time of just doing traditional. over 20 years I've never touched digital and the transition over to it was easy and now i do all my projects digital. fast and clean.
I've always been a sucker for traditional comics, but I have a question. I'm currently getting ready to start up a webcomic, and I don't know if I should really get a tablet to do my series or if I should do traditional art and scan it all into my computer and upload it as it is without the help of a digital image medium.

When I started using mine, I think it just gave me the confidence to start using sweeping lines, but I can see it backfiring as well. You are right.

Thats a little much. New technology always takes a small thing away from a small percentage of users and adds a great deal to the whole.
Some Ecchi thing I drew I awhile back for a draw request that I decided to color, I don't know why. The quality of line art made not worth the effort. Lazy construction and didn't really place the figure in the scene until last second, so there's no real sense of perspective. Should of just done something abstract for the background and called it good.

I did some studies, better ones this time. Three referenced, and a fourth without reference to see if my ability to draw him from memory had improved, which I think it has.

.... I was drawing in a fashion notebook. I bought it because it has some nice appendixes and references on clothing in general, like illustrated guide to types of hats for both men and women, and fabric qualities, and guides to types of coats.
I drew a rough skeleton , minus the skull and ribs, for the deer. Remember, when drawing arms, that there is not just one bone in the lower arms and below the knees. Attached to the elbow is the ulna and radius, 2 bones which actually glide over each other as you swivel your arm.
learn too draw?, that sounds kinda harsh, but that stuff is way too simple to critique/give advice since nothing is going on in there.

not really you make it sound like a must too but take for example cartoonists, their art form is based on taking real life objects/people and simplifying them breaking them down into simple shapes that kids can easily recognise, they dont really need perspective and exact anatomy knowledge, or portrait artists for example they dont know shit (most of the time, dont mean any disrespect) but how to read negative space and copy values, so to my point of view you dont really need to know those things if you dont find them necessary.

You need the armature/musculature the most. Just the blobby bodies you are doing right now isnt cutting it I dont think.
Then focus on confident lines, draw WHOLE lines, not sketchy segments.
Then focus on learning faces.

NOPE. Gridded it out on my computer and traced over it with tracing paper. details are all eyeballed and penciled in. I'll use any shortcut I can.

Like that other Anon said, always remember to have fun with what you do. I'm not always (i.e: often) satisfied with my end-product, but I still have fun with the process of drawing. Just make sure you're enjoying yourself.

1. I don't think it's a bad habit.. I think it's a good tool to use to see what works and what doesn't, as well as what you naturally like and gravitate towards. Can help point you in the "right direction", as far as a desired style goes. It just becomes a "bad" habit when all you do is ape other styles, and not try anything original.
2. It's good! Definitely gettin' the Timm vibes. You're doing good in emulating the animated series' style. The hips look a little narrow, especially given that most 'toons tend to exaggerate those features, but it's a good for a quick sketch.
It's not bad. It's a wee bit simple (and the image itself is a little messy and cluttered, in my opinion). Could we see a standalone image of him? And/or one with him, as compared to other characters he might co-star with?
Really diggin' that third sketch. A lot of fun and fluid shapes in there. As well as a lot of expression. I feel like there's already so much said about him and his personality.
Wicked! Though I'm having a little trouble discerning what the action is. Is he hammering or sculpting something into the ground? Nice, all the same!
Not bad, you definitely manage to capture the form, for the most part. I'd say that among the three of them, they're a bit too simple-featured, especially in the face, where there's a lot of negative space in comparison to the head and the clothes. It also looks like you fudged the hands a bit, particularly on the second image. But very good work! It's always fun to take stuff from real life.
This is giving me a headache. I'm pretty sure the shadows for the foreground buildings are OK. The middle-grounds ones, where I tried to be fancy, probably aren't. Right? Is there anyway to keep them that way, or will that completely fuck up the lightsource?

She seems to be lacking hips or any kind, but nice job on trying something different with the arms. I've got a real bad habit of "hands-on-waist", which is the easy-out method of dealing with it. The head also looks a bit big. Try forming the "skeleton" underneath, first. Then add on the meat and parts after, once the anatomy itself looks wholesome.

Lookin' good, but the skin tone on the human character blends in a bit too much into the background. I know that's an issue when doing monochrome-type stuff, but try working your comic in gray scale, first. It'll help loads.
Very expressive faces in those middle panels, I like it! The last panel is a bit off, though. I'm having trouble pin-pointing it, but I think it might be her neck or the pose itself looking a bit off-balance. Sorry I can't be more specific.
Very good! Some strong foundations there, Anon. And bonus points for the source-material. The front right kneecap looks a little inverted, but then again...maybe I'm just really bad at judging perspective and/or poses mid-stride. Very strong work, though.
Not bad! The jaw on the gal in the top-left seems a bit too "strong", if that makes sense. And you could use some work on constructing faces in general, but nice work, all the same. You certainly stepped out of the box, as far as poses and composition goes.
I think it's a matter of what you allow yourself to get away with. I try a blend of both, with emphasis on traditional, when/if I'm doing studies. That way you learn to appreciate what a computer allows you to do, while disciplining yourself, as to not have to rely on that kind of stuff.
tl;dr, I guess just don't overindulge on the features a computer offers you.
I think I see the same problem in this, as the green-colored one you posted before. Too many of the colors and shades end up getting cluttered with the background, the second panel in particular (and, to a slight degree, the fifth). Aside from that, I don't see a lot of change or expression between characters. Nice work regardless, though. Takes a lot of mojo to get a comic done!
Cool! Well done with your choice and use of colors. I think some bits of lighting are a little off (his ear stands out the most, when it should be shaded more, due to the light source).

I think a tablet is a worthwhile investment, even a cheap, 100-200 dollar one. Specifically, I think it's worth doing pencils in traditional, scanning, then trying to ink digitally. It can really amp up the quality of a work.
NSFW-ish stuff isn't exactly my forte, but a few things: you probably shouldn't be able to see the nip on the side of the boob like that. Unless it's really starting to drift from the side. Also, the head looks a little flat, especially since she's kind of looking over the shoulder. I know it's kinda tricky, but try moving the "peak" of her hair towards that right and getting some more perspective in there. Good work, though! And nice work, putting in a background. Not something you see often in posted works,

What is dead may never die, Anon.
There's a little too little (derp) to give strong critique, given how sketchy it is. But from what I can gather, try being more confident with your lines, shrinking the torso (it's VERY long) and adding more form to the limbs. I'd suggest basic drawing lessons, stuff like learning proportions, anatomy, construction, etc. Take it slow, but build yourself from the bottom up. Visit the sticky in /ic/, they have some great stuff for people of all skill levels. Don't lose steam!
I use Clip Studio Paint. It's only $50 and is more geared for drawing than Photoshop is. The brushes can leave a little to be desired, sometimes, but some clever tweaking of settings can help that out a lot.
Cute! Simple, but those two go hand-in-hand, most times. I'm not seeing any glaring issues with perspective or anatomy, myself. Perhaps the hands could use a little more detail/form, but at the same time, it seems to be your intended style for them (I assume it's 'cause you're emulating hooves).

Bats is surely pleased. It looks very nice! I think my only gripe is that the lower half (as in, from the hips, down) seems a bit off-center/balance. Moving them to be more centered would really make the pose look a lot more solid and forceful, I think. Imagine Dredd as something like a pillar.

Cool! Keep up the studies. Remember to reference from real life and do dedicated studies. The shading seems a little too strong on the lower brow (where the bridge of the nose meets the forehead), making it looks like it recedes farther into the face than it should. But a strong work, anyhow. I might also suggest softer colors and blending, especially when doing lighting. Keep it up!

looks ok. i remember what one of my art teachers told me once, "same light, same side." maybe have a reference cube around to map out your cast and reflected shadows or something.
anyway i rarely ever color anymore so i finished up a sketch and went to town.

Yeah. It was being really simple and basic from it. Almost a Paper Mario kinda style. I need to lay off of it and work on my lines and stuff more. I've been having a lot of fun doing stuff in that style, but it's not really constructive, y'know?

I've been on /co/ for a long time, longer than I care to admit, and you guys have all come a long way from drawing simple sketches of waifu smut.
Whelp, I guess I better finally get gud and learn to draw too. I've been putting it off for far too long.
Man, when you start drawing seriously, you start to realize that humans have huge-ass heads.
Like, I feel like I'm drawing an alium whenever I start to draw a person, especially when it's from reference.
Also, I found a whole folder full of crap art from as far back as 3 years ago to ~5 months from now. When I get my scanner to play nice with Ubuntu, would anybody be interested in an art dump?

Try drawing standing up on an easel, if possible. Otherwise, try drawing larger.
If you don't have access to an easel and you don't want to invest in large paper (like the cheapass that I am), fill sheets and sheets of paper with circles, ovals and lines across the page, trying to use your arm most of the time.
It will take some getting used to, but a large part of it is just getting it to work for you.

I have this habit too. It feels weird drawing with my whole arm instead of my wrist even though it's supposed to make certain things easier.
Did you make that? What did you use Flash? I never understand how people manage to keep consistent lines in frame-by-frame cause the smoothness feature always renders something different than I draw.

I'd warn against an art dump, just since it defeats the purpose of the thread (new/recent works), but it would be cool to see some comparison images. Try taking one of the old ones and put it along side something new you do!
It's a hard habit to break. Just discipline yourself and try working on BIG stuff. Like...23x18 big. It helped me tons.
What learning resources would /co/ reccomend for drawing and cartooning and stuff at a very basic level?
Also, aside from line paper and a pen, I have an android tablet and a stylus with a squishy touch screen pad on it. What apps can I use that can give me the most out of this?
It's in the Fantasy ballpark, therefore I love it. Your coloring isn't bad, but I think you could stand to brush up on it a little. If that image is at night (as I assume it is, from the sky), you'll wanna desaturate everything a little and lean towards the blue/gray area on the color wheel. Basically, there's just a lot of flatness to your colors. But that's fine! We were all there, at one point. Just do some studies, observe how lighting affects colors in real life and go from there. /ic/ has some tutorials and articles in their sticky.
Beyond your colors, your lines need a bit of work. There's not a lot of variation in them
and, in my opinion, I'd lay off the binary tools,but it's nothing that some experimentation with other brushes couldn't help you solve.
You're doing great though, Anon. Certainly better than me. I've been sitting on my webcomic concept for almost a year now, so high five yourself for me, knowing that you're leagues ahead a lot of the people
(like me)who post in the webcomic threads.

This isn't really new, but a while ago, I came across an older sketch I had made in one of my dad's notebooks, and decided to redo it.
I used to do a ton of these, too bad I don't have them anymore since my parents' divorce, cause he kept the notebooks. But I managed to save a few, like this one.

I use music but it helps a lot if it is a soundtrack from a movie you really liked, this way its easier to imagine a scene with a deeper feeling behind it.
Right music for the desired mood, dark room/sleepmask. Then I imagine what I want to draw like a scene from a movie, "press stop" when I'm at the right "frame" and try to bring that on the paper/screen.
Fun fact, I was just finished with sketches of Gustav Klimt-inspired waifu smut, with all the erotic poses and everything. My waifu was so sexy when I sketched her drunk off my ass every night.
Yet, it truly is the next step to becoming a full fledged drawfag when you start dressing your characters this time. It's like... your art now gives eye boners instead of penis boners.
Work for a comic and other things, bout to work on some more bug concepts though.

I am not great at it though but still. I think it is also because some people think that certain artist choose digital because it is easier. Some do though, but not everyone believes that. In conclusion, there is benefits in digital art, and disadvantages in traditional art Hell digital saves me some money in getting new sketchbooks
Also draw, even on vacations. Even when I don't have a scheduled task, or on a break, draw a quick sketch of something. Nothing strenuous though.
I'm sure it exists in some form somewhere, but I couldn't give an example. There was that crazy Chinese guy that built a mansion on top of a regular apartment building, without getting it approved by the building code people. Last I heard they were trying to make him tear it down.

trying some hatching, I actually tried to avoid it so far, because doing it with tablet ain´t easy but either I do this or I lose a lot of details because of heavy shading.

You should loosen it up a little. As it is now it just feels weird next to the hard black shading. Also, think about how you place the lines when hatching to create texture and volume.

An adventure game I'm attempting to make for Halloween. I doubt I'll finish it, but if I ram my head at the wall enough times eventually I'll find a door, or make one.
Here's my not so appealing programmer art.
Currently I'm messing around with the path finding for the character the player controls. You switch between three characters with different abilities and you use them to solve puzzles.
The setup is that the kids have a little ghost boy as a friend, and they want to go trick-or-treating with him. However, even though Halloween is the one night when ghosts can be free from their respective places of haunting, year after year the little ghost boy never leaves. The kids then decide to try and find out why he's so opposed to leaving, and this requires them to find out why he died in the first place.
It's fairly short, but still requires quite a bit of work. I'd be happy just to end up with some nice looking models by Halloween though.
I made it for a first person adventure, but it can easily be modified.

I cleaned up my hard drive today and stumbled on an old drawing I did from about 7 years ago. I decided to make a quick comparison image and compare it to some recent drawings I did of the same two characters...
Belly button's too close to the center of her torso. Since she's in 3/4 view it should be located more to the right of where it is now. I think that's what's throwing things off.

I actually made her chunkier as I felt it better fit her character: She's kind of goofy and tends to be on the receiving end of slapstick. I found making her heavier emphasized the fact that she's sort of assertive and doesn't give a shit.
The disinterested rocker girl mantel ended up being sort of taken over by another character.

Both of the judges are pretty appealing, and their personalities are pretty well conveyed through the styles in which they're drawn. My one gripe is the shading on the female judge. You (like me and many other male artists) seem to be lacking refined knowledge in the field of exactly what boobs do. Get that checked out.
As for the other ones, you left some of the guiding lines on your little Dobson. The singer looks a little bit too similar to the male judge. I really like the design on Villainousington, but the placement and size of his features seem to vary from picture to picture; though since you're going into Flash, you'll rarely be without references.
JMD needs to break out of his comfort zone, though. If it's not a girl with bodacious hips, his stuff looks a little "blegh". Not that I could do better, but he definitely needs to draw more varied material
The plot of the short is that it's the final casting call for an animated feature film, and all kinds of crazy characters are auditioning. I'm toying around with some cameos, though I don't think I'll put Dobby in the final product.

True. Nobody NEEDS to do anything. But I just feel that he should to build himself a bit more. Just because you draw babes decently doesn't mean you could/should draw them all the time. I'm sure he still feels drive, too. I also understand that he's been drawing smutty stuff lately 'cause he needs that sweet commission money, but aside from, his non-human and/or non-female drawings could really benefit from more work.
He's good, but needs to improve on things, just like the rest of us.
He should work more on that setting with the lizard and cactus people. That looked interesting as fuck.

thanks! i had a bunch of formal education towards it but the style wasn't really a conscious choice. i admire a lot of kinds of art too, so if i had to say anything about the way i draw, it's as if my style makes fun of cartoons while making fun of anime while making fun of real life.

I used to make comics about Kirby in 7-8th grade, as a joke among me and my friends. They were super shitty, but I made the mistake of throwing them out at some point. I kinda regret it.
But in seriousness, you might want to embolden your lines a little bit. The image looks "out of focus" with how soft it is. Good work, otherwise!

I wish I could help more, but all I got to suggest is using some reference pictures and see how that helps you. Perhaps images of a dancer or summat, since they're a bit more 'cat-like' in their builds, on average?

Well, hell, you have a pretty good page set up as it is. You would want to probably clean things up a little sharper, and a tablet would in fact help with that, but it's not entirely necessary. One of the lovelier comics I've read is traditional media, with clean ups done digitally as needed.
Plus, there -will- be a slight learning curve, adjusting to a tablet when you're used to traditional. If you want to go ahead and start your comic, I'd go ahead and do it traditionally.
Maybe invest in some fancier pens, first. The sketch looks part Bic (and god knows I love Bic pens, but good pens make much cleaner lines) and I'm not sure if that's pen or pencil on the comic page. Give a brush pen a shot, maybe a micron, see what you like. Faber-Castells are my favorite, but I still wanna learn how to brush ink.
I've still managed to avoid seeing any individual work Shadman has ever done. Is that noteworthy or is it sad? 'cause I feel like with the rap he gets, it could be either one.
I just need to step up my art game. My next big step is having art of a quality that's WORTH paying for. I'd want someone to look at what I do and think "Yeah, this guy is worth $15."

I'd highly recommend checking out Milo Milogiannis or Sean Murphy's skylines and check out Sean's demos he did a couple years back on youtube. He's got a great bit on doing city shots and such and I think it could really help cut your time down.

oh yeah, i still get that insecure feeling all the time but in the end, drawing is something i ultimately do for myself and nobody else. even if i don't get any better, i have enough fun just doing my own thing in the end. i've been drawing for a while and realized drawing for any other reason was just emotionally draining, so i put the brakes on that and am now pursuing another passion of mine for a living.
I know that feel, man. I keep telling myself I'll get something done, and, yeah, I chip away at it, but...putting something out? That's a different ballpark, man. It's tough.
Man, I hate to keep prying, but what are you pursuing instead? I wouldn't be so nosy normally, but it's actually a bit of a crisis I've had with myself lately. I feel worried that I should just leave art as a hobby and not as a career choice. But the problem is, I have trouble imagining myself being happy doing much else.
It might be the 'easy way out', but try giving his face the resemblance of a helmet. The other designs made him look more barbaric and brutish, rather than knightly. Aside from, it doesn't look like you need much work on it. Seems like you have a pretty good grasp on how to build characters and forms with shapes, which is awesome. Also, perhaps a shield? Seems like fantasy culture nowadays closely correlates knightly designs with a sword/shield combo. You could always try going that route.

that's ok. i've had a really weird couple of years so i'm used to kind of telling my life story to people. i won't go too into details though.
last year i got hired at an outdoor store, but late that year/early this year i made the transition into the gun department there. it's opened some doors for me; occasionally i get paid to get to gun shows and make designs for a separate dealer. i don't exactly make killer wages but it's been the most gratifying and rewarding set of jobs i've held in my life so far, so i'm going to try to take it as far as i can.
that's not to say i don't make time for drawing but it's safe to say a lot of what i do off the clock involves what i do for a living now, if it isn't already evident in the drawings i make, lol.

it might not be true for others out there, so take this with a grain of salt (or maybe even the whole shaker if you want)
you have to really, really, really want to do it to be successful. a lot of great artists i've personally known (some have passed as well) were pretty much penniless their whole lives, while others (some arguably less motivated and talented than the next) made pretty good bank on the merits of simply knowing somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody to get an in at some cushy gig to make bank. if you want to make it, DON'T give up and NEVER stop seeking out new knowledge.
the best advice i can really give you actually came from a bit of firearm instruction: always keep an open mind. don't be too rigid and always think adaptively!
Well I drew a Taokaka a few days ago. Tried to move away from static poses and try something more fluid. I actually like the pose, I just couldn't quite nail it down right.
Still not happy about the legs or face, but whatever, that's why sketchbooks have multiple pages.

But, yeah. You're right about the helmeted head designs, though I like the cute skull-like head I have in the preliminary design.
The one in the lower left is probably the most knightly of the lot I sketched out, with the tabard and such.
I'm not too hot about the shield idea, since in my mind a warforged can tank most damage, but I'll see how it works. It seems like a good opportunity to get some interesting designs out there.

No problem, friend! A lot of people KNOW to use shapes in their construction, but it's not as common to see someone who knows HOW to use them. All my suggestions were a bit 'cop out-ish', though. Go with what you feel looks good, and any gaps in the knightly demeanor can be bridged by things like dialogue, situations, and setting. And don't sweat the shield-thing too much. Keep his design as is. There's other ways to visually express knighthood. Try something less overbearing on the design, like a cape or some sort of insignia on the tabard. If you're thinking of something a little goofy, too, you could always make that standard "knight plume" just come right out from his head, but that might look a bit silly.
You've probably heard that, yeah. And to some extent, there's a bit of truth in it. But school isn't for everyone. Conversely, you learn techniques, make connections, and develop management skills that you otherwise wouldn't outside of school. Or at least you do at a faster rate than you might develop them on your own.
Me personally, I'm going to school because I tend to have a low amount of willpower and need the curriculum and knowledge to keep me going, otherwise I tend to stagnate.
Also, (I learned this from a professional I talked to, while she visited my class last semester. I ain't makin' this up) if you ever want a higher position with a place at, like, Disney or some big-wig company, you still need a degree. It's an industry standard for some/most elevated positions to require a degree. It could be a degree in Women's Studies, but they still require a degree.

Even so I did take a few shortcuts. the buildings get very sketchy towards the edges, and I was not at all careful about perspective.

People telling me I should draw more character art. I agree. Need a bit of variety in my stuff. Funny thing is, getting better at one type of art definitely helps in other types. I feel more confident when i do do character art.

I've been trying new things and I like how this is going. I tend to over-exaggerate her legginess but I may have over-over-exaggerated here. I think it works though.
I don't think it worked exactly. Usually when you see those over exaggerated legs, it's trying to create forced perspective or is at least balanced out by large shapes elsewhere on the form. In this pic you don't have that balance, and it doesn't appear to be in perspective, plus some of the anatomy is just not strong enough to make it convincing. It's probably not what you want to hear or do, but my personal recommendation would be to learn realistic anatomy first before you start trying to exaggerate, or at the very least study some art that has it, like Udon artists or Kim Hyung Tae

I'm by no means any expert when it comes to hatching, but I think you should make them more uniform and all going one direction. One direction to add value, and only add a 'cross' direction to show form, but since you have hard surfaces, I don't think you'll need to have any cross hatching.

This is my first storyboard myself after a fair bit of trial and error. basically you'd want to create or buy pre done story board layouts, but since my printer isnt working I'm just going hands on. Each of my panels is around half a page big with the info box filling out a couple cm's. It's really up to you how you do personal layouts but on a professional level youd best check out how the masters do it. I also tend to leave things out since its a personal project and I have a good idea of where to go past the work print but as long as anyone who reads it and has a decent imagination can sense what the cartoon would be like, so you have to include everything that would be in the cartoon, movements, sometimes even sound cues and script notes. It's pretty fun, would reccomend as a career.

Left is from April or May-ish. Right is from yesterday. I was never good, but, man, I feel like I've downgraded a ton.

i probably would not put myself in any position to pay back a huge debt at any point unless i had a sure fire way to pay it back, but if you're on solid ground then by all means! i'd suggest looking into vocational schools and short courses before dipping into a full-on college degree, or maybe even an atelier course if you want a comprehensive background in classical-style art and application without the hefty price tag of four years in college.

yeah, it's really general advice that can apply to anything. i had no problems scoring small gigs even after i dropped out of college, and if i had the mindset too, i probably could have made a pretty good career out of it myself. no regrets at all though!

lol, she's not the first character to pop up into my mind whenever i think of a STRONK INDEPENDENT FEMALE CHARACTER WHO DON'T NEED NO MAN, but she is a great one nonetheless. composition is also very important in pretty much any art form too, and the ways you can play with it are endless!
