>start watching the Moomins
>them feels towards the end of episode 1
Come on /co/, how about a Moomin thread?
Moomins are breddy good. The episode with the stray zoo animals is my favorite.
Well Mongols have similar taste.
I watched it when I was a kid, sometimes.
What I remmeber is that it swung mood like holy fuck what. You'd go from happy fun times in the lake one episode to Moomin turning into a horrible creature and desperately trying to have his life back when nobody accepts him the next.
Oh, yeah, that faggot hiding in a magicians tophat while playing, turning into a gremlin-thing and being shunned and beaten by everyone. That shit was great and made me stop hiding in closets and boxes and cupboards as a child. Top-notch parenting right there.
>an adaptation made in japan makes it japanese
A reminder that this is coming out on Oc 10
>If Moomin aired today it would turn to /mlp/
Don't even joke about that!
I like how they made Groke some kind of scary looking being that makes everyone shit their pants when they see her, yet it turns out she's actually a kind and friendly person, just lonely because she can't make physical contact with anyone without freezing them.

Basically it's a show about a family of trolls resembling hippos called Moomin family, that lives in a secluded valley in Finland. The show mostly focuses on the family's son Moomin (or Moomintroll) who goes through all sorts of crazy and wondrous adventures, sometimes alone, sometimes with his family and friends. Simple but quite fun and popular, it started as series of novels and comics, and was adapted into a multitude of animated series (the anime from 1990. being the most known and loved one).
It's a Japanese cartoon based off a Finnish cult classic comic/book series. It's very good also, but I recommend the original comics which had occasional black humor and adult themes instead of being all cutesy and family friendly.
I'm starting to upload them here so that people can have a direct link to it.
the 90's one was the one made under tight direction from tove jansson's brother and remaining family who held the rights. The earlier versions never got their approval because the moomins didn't behave or look right and the general feel was all wrong, so the japanese did a new collaborative version that got popular
>I already found the 90's version creepy as a kid.
It can be prety fucked up with some of its dream seuqences, and general moments of
Had to post these, they're fucking briliant.
I'm a finn and the "anime" adaptation always felt like the "official" one. The drawing style and mood is really faithful to the original comics and it was co-written by lars jansson, the original creator's brother. Or at least I think I saw his name somewhere, maybe he was co-producing it?
First episode is halfway here.
>you know it's true
>forgetting the worst NOPE moment of the entire show
I mean seriously, what the fuck Japan.

"Okay, you've got it? You got hold of it? Now, like. Like. Pull really hard."
"Yep. Feels nice and firm."
"Ready to go down?"
"I'm a little nervous. This is my first time."
"Just relax. Just relax. And let it happen. You'll do fine."
"Oh no! I'm stuck!"
"Don't worry. Don't worry. Just take a deep breath and ease yourself in real slow."
"You know, all of this sounds like it might have a double meaning."
"That is highly unlikely. Now c'mon. Squeeze your big strong Moomin muscles and get yourself down that tight hole."
I want to
> mfw watching that scene as a kid
The episodes that were banned in western countries were pretty bad too. Goddamn tree demon wtf.
A lot of them do, yeah, but not necessarily. We got a lot of Swedish names too. Jansson is a swedish name.
>The drawing style and mood is really faithful to the original comics
The Japanese animations are not faithful to Tove's comics. I think the upcoming Moomin on the Riviera is probably the most faithful one, at least what the trailer will have you believe. I don't think even the story is very faithful to the Moomin-books. The books most have a more serious underlying theme to them while the Japanese just concentrate for the child-audience. Not saying they're bad, but I think us who've experienced moomin primarily through the Japanese animated series need to be more open for other adaptions too.
What in the everliving fuck were they thinking?
Moomin teaches your kids not to wander off into the woods on adventure. While still being an adventurous show.
And considering all the dangerous woods in both the Nordic countries and Japan. It was kind relatable.
Lars Jansson is not just "the original creator's brother". He worked on the newspaper strip at first alongside his sister and later entirely by himself.
Both Tove and Lars Jansson were involved with the 1990 adaptation and their names are above the title in the Finnish opening credits, though no specific role is attributed to either. The Japanese opening credits list them as original creators. Tove at least had the right to demand changes during production, so while the episodes are not 100 percent replicas of the original novels or the newspaper strip, any changes that survived were things she considered to be okay.
>show from Europe
It was Finnish/Japanese show so it figures
There was also few shows about Moomins before this made in Japan because those people fucking love the books apparently.
>talks about tove's comics
>posts a book illustration
i see what your'e saying, but the feel IS very similar. Also lots of the storylines from the comics and books were adapted to the animation show, although they also created completely new storylines.
What about the old Polish stop motion series? Both Tove and Lars contributed to it, and Tove seemed to have been very pleased after their result. Polish writers would send them scripts and they would give them revisions before the episodes were made.
they were being very faithful to the original books, it's one of the episodes that's directly based on the book stories
Got a link for the full scene? I never saw this one.
>The episodes that were banned in western countries
That'd explain why I never saw this one
What is this episode about?
>checking out info on the moomins like a sperg
I talked about the books as well, which why the picture. But what I was trying to say was that moomins have many sides; the books are different, the comics are different and the animations are different. I don't think there is one ultimate and original moomin that all adaptions have to try to achieve (nor am I saying that you would think so).
Personally I like the long japanese animation of the comet story while the jungle- and time-travel stories were pretty weak. Were the time-travel, jungle and Mars stories taken from the comics or made for the animation?
It's the very first episode of 90s series.
Moomin awakens from his winter hybernation, find a strange big hat with his friends, hides in it during the hide-and-seek game and gets turned into that monster as a result (the hat belongs to a powerful sorcerer).
Not sure about Mars but jungle and time travel are straight off the comics.
The comics were pretty rad, I recommend them heartily. Moominpappa makes moonshine with Stinky in one of the stories, and at one point the moomins try to buy weed from hippies. You don't see stuff like that in the animation.
The ghost ship isn't from a banned episode. The banned episodes had a tree demon, a pirate with knives and poison, and Little My getting trolled into thinking she's turned into a monster. They weren't banned in all countries either: the English dub has the pirate episode though they cut My biting the pirate's hand and the tree demon episode apparently was aired in Sweden.
stinky is the best, he's a total chancer and also secretly distills illegal booze
>Not speaking glorious Estonian
Seriously, though. My heart goes out with the Estonian people. They didn't get 1/3 from the books in their native language until 1995 even when they already had the most of them back in 1975
heavily adapted from the comics I think, but I always liked the comics a bit better because of the suitable for adults -humour was more prominent in them. The story of the wizard's hat turning the house into a jungle was even based on the books I think
The Finnish localization found the Groke to look way too scary for their children to see.
They just couldn't take it.
So, to solve this issue the Finnish version did the logical thing, "Let's not show the kids the Groke as much, that way the kids won't be as scared and they can watch the show".
In practice the chosen method was to pump up the saturation and dark colors so the shadows and such would block out Groke from the footage.
>The riverhorsey inc lttd incorporated whatever removed the Lonely Mountains youtube vids with the english subtitles and HD footage
>mfw thread devolves into ebin finnish memes
>the only way to notice if Groke is nearby is the mist, ammount of frost on the ground and the grunts she occasionally makes
>if she spots you she'll stand still and stare at you
>if you stand still for too long, she'll rush you and it's game over
>if you walk towards her, she'll growl, take few steps back and then charge at you, again, game over
>if you get the fuck away she'll chase you for a bit but she'll be somewhat slower, giving you a chance to evade her. After a short time she'll give up and move on.
Who's the best character, and why is it this sexy motherfucker?
Weird request, I tried to find this years ago. It was a moomin comic where one of the moomins tried to give a gift to another moomin, who declined. The last panel has the gift giver with an intense look saying that they have to take the gift. Does anyone have this comic?
Pic related, I think it looked like this.
They look so fucking retarded with those faces, god damn, I shouldn't be laughing this hard.
That episode was legendary.
After google translating what they're saying, this is it. Thank you! I've looked for this for years. I saw it here once and didn't even know what it was from, and then I couldn't ever find it.
this is a beautiful picture.
I don't know what it is about the groke but holy fuck she is scary. Something about the cold and the growling and the inevitable approach of death, oh god.
I remember having horrible nightmares about her, shit like seeing her approaching over the frozen lake, me rushing back into the house, and desperately trying to lock the door, as she got closer and closer.
Back in 00s 5million finns consumed more furry porn than the entire population of Norway and USA
This is actually pretty decent, got it on /mu/ some time back.
WHOT. Looks like some Dick Tracy fan got my Moomingelions.
>never heard of moomins
>friend in mexico tells me about childhood cartoons
>look up an episode on youtube
>dark as fuck shit about some groke thing waiting outside of the house
>episode just ends with moomin holding gun
>sit there and think that maybe this means death is inevitable and will always be lurking in the shadows
>now understand why my friend was so bothered as an eight year old

Little My is the absolutely best character in the show?
This is a fact.
>I will say that Papa moomin is rather swagging though.
I remember reading from somewhere that these two were also kind of based on the Tove and her partner.
This fucker was always hilarious, both in the show, as well as in the comics.
