I have an old motorcycle which I would like to fit with a modern CDI ignition. The ignition would be of the type typically fitted to dirt bikes and which require a high voltage AC source. They have a permanent magnet alternator with a separate high voltage stator for the ignition in addition to a 12V stator. My bike has a permanent magnet alternator which contains two 6V stators wired in parallel. I am wondering if it is possible to use a transformer to provide a ~300V source from the stock alternator to power the CDI. I could dedicate one of the stators to the ignition... Comment too long. >>926732 It's a 1965 Ducati 250. I am hoping to avoid rewinding the stator because it would require a lot of turns to get the voltage I need and as the old magnets aren't as powerful as they were 50 years ago, I can't be sure what voltage I will be getting out of it. With the transformer approach I can afford to experiment. The trigger problem is easy to solve, the high voltage supply is not.
It's y first time here. My father and I are renovating our upper and lower porches in accordance to the preservation board of our city. We're not that well off, so he has to do it himself, and I try to help, but I don't know a lick about this.
From what he tells me though, the people are trying to run a game on him. For instance, though he got permission to continue with the project, the board was 'displeased' because he didn't come to them for the okay, despite the fact that we would lose the house if he didn't, and if they said no.

>the board was displeased sounds more like they were displeased because if you did it incorrectly you would have wasted your time, and if you present your project to them beforehand you will know if what you're doing is acceptable. So I would be displeased too, if I was on that committee given I have a conscious and wouldn't want someone to lose their house for a frivolous reason.
>>926622 Thank you for your the comment. It's my understanding that they were displeased because, though he got the go ahead, he didn't meet with them with plans and such. Which I can understand.
I certainly hope they're as like-minded as you, and not the, admittedly, callous higher ups I picture them to be in my head. Though I have to reiterate, I am not the one doing this, my father is. I'm just trying to collect information to help.
>>926617 >dealing with city officials and the like
Building officials are usually power hungry twats. I am an engineer, so they have no real power over me other than delaying my client's project. None the less, bend over backwards for them and make them feel important.
I'm painting several wooden boxes with oil paints and I've been trying to figure out what the best kind of varnish is to use. I want a glossy look like the wooden cutouts in the pic I posted, how do I achieve this look?
I often use wipe on gloss polyurethane, take your time and apply a ton of coats (like 10 or so) lightly sand with 600-800 grit every 3 coats just to remove any high spots or dust nibs. That alone will get you a nice gloss, but for the best gloss let the poly cure for at least a week, then come back with some automotive wax and a buffer. That sumbitch will blind you when the light hits.
Hi diynosaurs, i'm actually working on a project that requires the use of a stepper motor, in particular i need to control the speed of the motor using an arduino uno. I've read that stepper motors need a dedicated driver to work and i was wondering if i need a particular driver or just the cheapest-random one. I do already have the motor and can provide the name if needed (i didn't find specifications of the exact model though). I was looking forward the easy stepper motor driver, but i'm not sure if that allows me to control the speed by the code on the... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

You do need a "stepper" motor driver, or a motor driver board that can operate a stepper motor. There are also "brushless" (or BLDC) motors and DC... Comment too long. I'm building a SFF PC using an AMD APU. While the PC itself is simple enough, one of the features I'm trying to build into it is an LCD screen attached to an Xbox 360 controller that lets you play your games and stuff on that little monitor.
The monitor: http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-inch-800x480-Touch-LCD-Screen-5-Display-For-Raspberry-Pi-Pi2-Model-B-A-S3-/381299675603?hash=item58c73b51d3:g:2QMAAOSwDNdVgtc1 The clip to hold the monitor to the 360 pad: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nyko-Xbox-One-Smart-Clip-Smartphone-Mobile-Phone-Harness-for-Xbox-One-Controller-/351377889992?hash=item51cfc11ac8:g:1J0AAOSwpDdVeHDq
The problem is how I execute the idea for the most convenience. There are two ways I can accomplish this:
A) Stream the video from the PC to the screen as a client device. I can strip a Steamlink down to the board and connect it to the LCD via HDMI, then build a case around the boards to enclose them into one unit. This sounds a lot like Nvidia's Shield Portable, but that thing only works with Nvidia video cards, and I'm using an AMD APU. Drawbacks: Will have to work with Steam's Streaming service, will need to connect the Steamlink to AC power, requires wifi, input lag.
B) Treat the LCD as a monitor and run an HDMI cable between it and the back of the PC. Drawbacks: The LCD and the PC will be connected to each other by HDMI and USB cables.
Any folks with ideas? I'm thinking of doing B and just dealing with the cables, but I'm trying to see if there is a better way.
The Steamlink is small enough to hide behind a 5 inch screen fortunately. However, I'd have to run the power cable into it because I don't have any experience with wiring batteries. I heard that for what it does, the Steamlink works great as a streaming device but there is a lot of added complexity with using Steam's streaming service and I don't want to be using so much of the wifi's bandwith from streaming games.
Either way, it looks like I'm gonna have to deal with cables for this project, unless there is another way for video data to... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
pic related. ordered a chinese 3040T cnc router/mill and should get here today. it is coming with some pirated mach3 software which is supposed to be pretty decent. I prefer linux, and installed linuxcnc to mess around with it. i can see that there will be a learning curve either way to get it set up (cnc noob), but i wanted to ask here to see what sort of CAM software solutions are used, or preferred, why, etc.
Hello guys, I want a wifi RC rover or an RC spy tank to watch my house.
However: all these so called wifi rovers or wifi spy tanks don't connect to your wifi so you can drive and watch them when you are not at home, but they make their own wifi network, so you can only use them when you sit next to it. Which kinda ruins the point.
I was wondering if any of you guys know where I would go to do something like this or make it myself even.
Basicly I want to drive around in my house when i'm not at home and I want... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I was kinda thinking I really want an RC Excavator with the reason I can maybe use parts of it. And its fucking fun anyway, it brings back the kid in you. But it could be used to put a camera on the arm and maybe turn the basket into some sort of claw for some extra fun. So lets say I buy a cheap RC shovel. Then I need an IP camera with battery and some way to control this thing on my smartphone over the internet.
How the hell would I go about doing this?
it seems fun as fuck though, instead of playing... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>926556 I've been looking at some RC excavators at Gearbest, Dealextreme, Banggood and shit but they are expensive as fuck to send to my country (i live in europe) so I might need to keep looking to find a good one I can use for this project.
I want one with real tracks and something that is a bit sturdy. Many probably use weak as fuck servo's and no real hydraulics, but i kinda wanna do it as cheap as possible so I dont think I have any choice
I work as a supplier of marine electronics and because of this i often end up with stuff that probably has some neat diy applications. I'm not interested in using it as intended, mostly because i don't have a boat. Some of the stuff even work just fine, they're just worn or no longer meets todays regulations. So, any suggestions on what to do with VHF radios, radars, echosounders, and all sorts of antennae?
hey /diy/ my piece of shit brother threw a tantrum and broke my headphones. audio still works but any tips how to repair the hardware? its a JBL j55 and the broken parts are plastic -need a permanent solution-
he broke 2 things one pic i will put one side here and other in comment section
I'm customizing this old wood box and I want to reverse-stain a design on it and I guess I should check before making any mistakes
I've already sanded the old ink out and the rest just because, and I'm gonna >Cut a design in vinyl with a plotter >Stick it on top >Stain the wood a darker color >Wait for it to dry >Remove vinyl >Apply clear varnish Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
hey /diy/ when i i'm asleep i grind my teeth because i'm under a lot of stress, i've already taken some acetaminophen (for medical reasons of course) but that doesn't work for that long. so basically my up-right teeth row hurts like hell. is there anything i can do/make to ease the pain (THAT ISN'T A DRUG) so i can sleep again?
danks (pic related because this is how i feel when the acetaminophen worked out)
