How do you distress clothing to make the threads loose and tattered? Pic related

I have a new Timberland boat shoe
What to do with it?
Paint with acryl?
Distress with sandpaper?
Cut off edgy sole?
dip dyeing didn't work too good, so I touched it up with spray paint.
Hopefully just going to hand wash it and it should stand up pretty good.
Anyone know what the verticle straps are called on the shirt(pic related)? Anyone know where to cop just the straps or something close?
Just sew a sleeve pocket on a sweater.

i actually asked my mother about this (used to be big into sewing)
she said the structure of most modern tshirts are 'knitted' in that they stay together with very little, if any, unraveling if you raw hem them
ill double check to see if that is the case, but thats what she said from memory
Cheesegrater do work, although for knit sweaters, i find that its best to use a seam ripper and find the joining loops slash pattern flaw and surgicaly sabotage. Wash afterwards for fray
