I think using clips or not, it's a good idea to utilize some safety bars when lifting alone.
Just a bought a squat rack with adjustable safety bars for my homegym, which I will be using for benching too.
If the guy in the OP's post will actually end up making even the slightest amount of progress, he is probably going to invest in some better equipment or join a public gym. It's not gonna take much weight on the bar before he realizes this setup is not gonna work.
