>Liftan since Feb >Started on SL 5x5 >Realized it was far too much volume >Switched to SS, been doing for a Month and a half >Just dropped Pendlay Rows for Powercleans today Pretty sure I'm not doing it right but whatever >Added in some assistance with Hammer Curls, Preacher Curls, Pullups, Chinups, and Skullcrushers also Ab Roller and Hanging Knee Raises >Just got my squat to 100kg today for 5/5/2 Gonna nail it next time. >Also bought my first set of Oly shoes Missed out on Romaleos but managed to cop some Do-Win's for cheap.
I did SL (and the modified version in the sticky) for like 6-8 weeks. T-rex mode is real. it's not the worst thing in the world though. I've barely had to touch my legs since then and I guess I learned how to lift. Added fly's and hammer curls, dropped the squats and deadlifts (not completely), and went to hypertrophy reps.
I did SS for 4 months. My lifts improved a good bit, I was happy with the progress. Then I got sick and was out for about a year. Lost a lot of gains. I've just started Ice cream fitness this week, any done that before?
>>31922969 >linear gains all the way up until i stopped the routine so you did start with the bar and added 5 lbs on squat 3 times a week like SS suggests? and you did that for 1.5 years? lets do the math shall we. 52*1.5*3*5+45=13pl8 squat mirin your saiyan genetics
>>31922909 I took routines from Never Gymless, Overcoming Gravity, with some other random gymnastics training routines. I'd do a writeup, but tbh judging by the calisthenics general getting laughed off the board, why bother
My gym has no squat rack with safeties and squats are just now starting to get hard for me. What am I supposed to do? Am I supposed to keep the "linear progression" on squats 3 times a week or is it ok to use the same weight and increase weekly? I don't really care about lower body anyway.
>>31922283 I did SL then moved onto SS once I bought the book, SL's volume is crazy for anyone past that first 6 week period, now I'm moving onto Advanced SS (for background I did a shitty brosplit with a shitty attitude for about a year max twice a week, saw mediocre chest, lat and shoulder development).
Biggest change I noticed apart from the obvious strength was my legs and arse, they got fookin juicy. My low back, chest and shoulders all saw significant improvement too, and my arms would've kept up had I been consistent with the pull ups and dips.
Also when I stopped SL I struggled to row 50kg, now I can do 1pl8 for 5 with ease and literally haven't rowed since then, clearly the Deadlift and Chins are good enough to not warrant it
I know that lasy line is stupid though since squats train "hip drive" and probably general strength and god knows what else necessary to the program, not to mention being the yardstick for progression in the program.
>>31923076 Had to do it once, shamefur dispray, i don't want to do it again, as far as seeing other people doing it, it could have happened but i saved the a guy from it. >Me resting between sets >Hear a voice behind me >"C-can i get some help" >This guy benching 1pl8, weight is completely still, he's shaking like Japan every other day >Weight starts to slowly go down on him >OH SHI- >Run to him and basically row it while thinking "if i snap my shit for this guy i'm going to kill myself" >They guy proceeds to make excuses like i was judging him for what happened.
>>31923192 I imagine I would do it more often if I trained for lower reps, but I'm a weakfag who trains for 5 reps and I can usually do the next higher weight for 3 reps or more If you're doing 1rm I imagine it's more common to do the roll, but you might aswell get a spotter for that
>>31923255 point is you did STARTING strength for well over a year, didn't even do it consistently and then had the fucking balls to talk shit. bet you didn't even read the fucking book. exactly the kind of idiot who fails on SS. m8 just owe up to it, some people have to be on the bottom end of the bell curve
>>31923221 Something like this happened last year, in my gym there is an entire wall with mirrors by the dumbbells. I was resting between sets with my headphones on, and I kind of was daydreaming, until at the corner of my eye in the mirror I saw a guy benching. I could see he looked as if he was struggling on the bench with 80kg down on his chest. I didn't know if he was okay with the weight or not, but he kind of gave me a gentle nod as if to say can you help me buddy so I ran over and helped lift it off. Thing is though I was a hungry skelleton who could barely deadlift 60kg so it was a bit of an embarrassing struggle to help him
>>31922283 >Wanted to look good. >Come on /fit/ >Read the sticky. >Make a thread asking everyone just in case. >Everyone gives me the green light. >Go ahead do SS. >Get an Inguinal hernia from heavy squats. >Get surgery >Lose the strength I gained. >Didn't lose any muscle mass as I didn't get any to begin with. Just got fat.
For anyone that's considering it, don't do it. Do a split and do not progressivly overload too soon as with any Strength/Power training program. Take your time, learn the movement, adapt and make a muscle-mind connection.
>>31923672 As i understood it, he did 8 months of SS and did X months of lifting afterwards. As i'm a 1 year lifter myself i know what bodies look like. I just found impressive that you can achieve a joocy look by doing cali (always wanted to try cali, never did because of that).
>>31922283 Never understood why people force SS on beginners so much
Back when I started bb, i always did 5x8-12 on main movements and 3x10 on accessories (shit tons of volume on ppl routine once a week) Reached 135kg bench after 20 months, but squat strength progression was utter shit (140kg)(although legs responded extremly well to high reps - hypertrophy wise) I didn't know shit about lifting then, yet i made better gains than 95% of people i see now post in cbt and say they did 1yr+ of strength programs
I just don't get your obsession with strength. My thougts are that "strength" training has become a trend lately and every fucking faggot keeps saying shit like "you gotta build a decent strength base first" yet they all look dyel
Im not trying to criticize SS, i think it's a good program for STRENGTH, but I think there are better programs for a beginner who just wants to pack some muscle/look good /rant good night /fit/
I don't get it either. To me it's like expecting to get bigger by pushing against an immovable wall (strength), as opposed to by doing hard fucking work (hypertrophy type training). The strengthfags will always be dyels while guys who bust their ass with higher volume will look better. Can you tell me your program?
>>31922283 I am still doing SS + accessory work. On the 4th month. >1.4/2.3/3.7/4.3
My goal is to get to 2/3/4/5, then do Push/Pull/Legs to focus on hypertrophy. I should mention that I used to lift 6 years ago throughout high school 4 times/week. Had to break for a nightmare bachelor/master experience.
>Weak lifter = little room for growth. Benching 30kg will make you look like someone who benches 30kg or heavier if you're on a hypertrophy program. Sure, if you bulk and cut with minimal (if any) strength gains you can look fairly good by normal people standards but you'll still be limited by how much you can lift.
>Stronger lifter (background in powerlifting, eg. SS) = more weight can be moved, which means a larger response to the stress.
The way I described it sounds broscience-y, but the general idea is that someone who starts weak will be limited by that weakness, whereas someone who makes an effort to improve their strength before progressing will have more room to grow.
>>31926884 Like a typical pale, gynotastic SSer. Some of the accessory work is for hypertrophy, but my body is nothing special. If you really want a picture, I will try to post one. However, I am doing last minutes taxes at the moment lelol
I'm doing SS now and I break a sweat quite often. I usually feel sore the next day as well. And I usually don't work out for more than about a half an hour. Sounds like you weren't challenging yourself and just want to do cardio
Did SS for about 6 months while cutting (was 330lb fatass, now 215lbs) and switched to Candito's upper/lower split when I stalled. I have nothing but good things to say for SS; my lifts went from bar-only to:
>>31928330 Hey man, I'm >>31928330 , I could use some help/advice on how you managed to get off from bar only. I'm two weeks in and only my DLs and Squats are progressing, chest, OHP and BB row all stalled.
I didnt do starting strength because the first day that I tried it; I could already squat 2pl8s and 2.5 pl8s for deadlift which to me suggested that I wasn't going to get newbie gains since I was already strong.
>>31923104 Why do tons of volume to be less strong? Might as well get up to 1234 on 3x5 and then 2345 on 3x5 and then switch to a hypertrophy hybrid to become joocy >>31927945 They're just cheap ass Do-Win's nigga.
So I squat 1.5 x bodyweight and deadlift 2 x bodyweight. Lifts are stalling. My 1 rep max is 3 pl8 something on deadlifts and squats for 1 rep max is 2 pl8 25. If I do squats three times a week; I find I fail a lot of reps because the weight is too heavy.
I bench 1 rep max of 1 pl8 since SS does jack shit for upper body.
Is it time to move on to something else? I eat like a motherfucker so my collarbones are no longer visiable; I have a gut now; and I have a layer of fat all over my legs.
>>31932538 It's time to move on. According to SS you move on when you deload squats 3 times and it sounds like you should be at or near that point if you are following the program. (Stall 3 times in a row = deload 10%).
>tfw my $300 pair of designer A.P.C. skinny jeans no longer fit me >tfw my favorite short shorts dont fit me anymore >tfw my old shorts ripped near my asshole >tfw I got gay butt now and thighs touch >tfw girls slap my ass and pinch it and comment how nice my ass are (but no mention of my upper body)
Why did I do Starting Strength? Why? I should of listened. Now I got thunder thighs, stretch marks on my thighs and shoulders and all for what 2.5 pl8 squat? I dont even care about strength.
>>31932590 >>31932667 You're right. I got SL and SS end points confused. Either way it's time for the poster to stop SS.
>>31932605 No one ever agrees on shit like this, but I'd just switch to a decent hypertrophy program like PPL or PHAT.
Your bench is a bit weak, but your other option is going to TM or a weekly progression program if linear progression has really stopped working for a while. And it's obviously going to take a while for significant strength gains on weekly progression.
>>31934313 I just put in more 2 cardio days in between and have 2 rest days. I say it's best for beginners like me because it's not too bulky too look at and it's very simple to pick up and keep on doing it until further success.
