is seti@home worth the computing time?
BOINC and distributed computing in general is amazing, and there are so many other interesting projects... is it worth it to use the computing time for the search of radio signals from other civilizations? It is argued that in the history of human civilization, these type of radio signals lasted less than a century because we've already scaled down to more directional broadcasting, satellites, more sensitive receivers, etc. So it would be not only a needle in a haystack but also in a very limited time frame
>limited development period of random broadcasting that can be detected
That seems logical. It would also be very risky to intentionally broadcast omnidirectionally to civilizations that could have FTL capability when the broadcasting civilization does not.
You've convinced me that SETI is a waste of effort, at least in its current form.
>I used SETI@home in the '90s
Can you beat my score /g/? No? Thought so
EMACS GEEZERS ON SUICIDE WATCH
I recently started helping with a project for large volunteering organization that uses a large code base to process all the administrative duties of the organization. The entire code base is completely undocumented. Zero comments, zero explanation, I don't even know what all it does are and the interface is a maze. All the code up to this point has been written by one guy who works on it every once in a while in Java. This is all volunteer work and I work a full time job so I can't exactly tell the guy to stop being a shitty developer nor do I have the time to...
Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Nigga thats why its work. If it wasn't volunteer work you'd be getting paid a decent amount for it. You don't understand the code because you haven't spent the time to understand it, not because its not documented. Just because you're not actively programming doesn't mean it's not part of your job.
Git gud and deal. Once you understand it document it yourself
How do you cucks manage to use this shit? Half of the shit I try to throw at like my add-ons just don't end up working. Mostly because I'm running an unsupported version of Firefox for said add-ons.
I can't even fucking watch Twitch at all. inb4 you guys suggest me to use livestream and pinpoint it to my said media player of choice. No, that's not how a browser should function. I shouldn't have to rely on other software to get what I want out of a stinkin' browser.
Convince me that I should stick with this piece of shit.
Is there an 1155 workstation motherboard that supports RDIMMs instead of UDIMMs?
I think that support is CPU-dependent and I doubt any of the 1155 Xeons support registered ECC, at least from what I've found googling around.
You'd probably be better off looking at generation-older high end boards or something of the like.
Why is there no 24" Freesync 1080p BenQ Freesync monitor? I don't need nor want the 27" 1440p nigga!
There are in total 3 24" 1080p 144hz freesync monitors in the world, go on pcpartpicker and go to individual parts and categorize the monitors accordingly. You'll find 3 to select from. I'd recommend the Asus or the AOC, not sure about the third one. I think it's a viewsonic something.
What's your favorite desktop environment?
How do VM's protect your privacy?
Seems to me like youd still be connected to the same ip adress and everything how does it make any difference?
>overclocking my new 6700k
>stable at 4.6ghz, vcore set to manual at 1.32v
>guide says to switch to offset once stable
>do it, set an offset of +0.05v
>stress test it using occt
>vcore shoots up to 1.5v
What the fuck is going on?
Why is razer generally disliked among enthusiasts?
No clue. I've had a Blade 14 ever since it first came out and other than the battery capacity crapping out (as all laptop batteries tend to do after several years), it's been the best I've ever owned.
can agree to an extent, the plastic is a bit cheap but logitech keyboards aren't any better
>target them at teenage boys
how? colors? nigger isn't "pretty colors" the thing a teenage girl says when she buys shit?
is this book for beginners or is it for more advanced people?
ITT: Build a PC that costs under $400 that includes a legitimate copy of any version of windows
Best PC gets a game of their choice on steam
>that includes a legitimate copy of any version of windows
You can't really buy 7 anymore unless you're looking to get scammed with a key that been sold 200 times.
If you're trying to imply the best version of Windows 1- then you're definitely boned because $400 isn't enough to get you a MSDN subscription for Enterprise LTSB
I hope /g/ knows how to physically defend itself
Hey guys. What is a good programming language to start learning the ropes of programming?
I plan on taking some courses in spring, when I gather up some money, but I want to know some of the basics until then. I learned very basic Pascal and HTML, no C, during highschool ( and by basic I mean, doing a very basic/ugly web page or doing a small program that does x+y). Are C/C++/Python/Ruby good choices ? If so, which one should I try first? What are your opinions ?
Wich one is the best for playing ?
What modern technology would look like if RSA/AES was not invented at all?
Is the SD801 the 2500k of smartphone SoCs?
The Galaxy s5 is one of the most coolest running phones I have ever used.
Plus it still has better battery life than any other Samsung phone, it was really only beaten by the z3 compact

Hi /v/ i'm looking for your advice.
What kind of deployment will you use to cover a warehouse with wifi, i'm giving to you 2 options, but i need your advice and guidance
I think I've found THE coolest job posting related to tech ever. An embedded software engineer at Koenigsegg.
To remind you, these are the people in Sweden that make pic related.
Windows 10 broke NVIDIA Control Panel and now the screen is all fucked up, it's not widescreen anymore, I tried to download the drivers from NVIDIA but it keeps failing what do?
>"guys, official windows port is totally coming in december, 2015"
>"utorrent fags on suicide watch"
>"bitcomet users btfo"
>still no official windows build
Actually there is a testing build out.
The problem is that it defaults to local locations when connected to a remote server which is a no-no.
Just do it like everyone else.
Get a separate machine for NAS running Linux.
Install transmission Daemon there.
And just use the transmission-remote client like anyone that doesn't want an aneurysm.
Hey /g/. Friend found a site that posed as a Firefox urgent update and autodownloaded a .js file. Anyone have any idea what it does?
I got this a few times but because i'm not a retard i didn't allow it to auto-download
it's only happened the few times i have visited Reddit. system is clean i have made sure, their site is just compromised and shitty.
It's probably a trojan so yeah.
We must secure the existence of libre software and a future for GNU/Linux. Heil Stallman!
Does anyone on /g/ own a 5930k/4790k and a GTX 1080? Because if anyone has either of those combos it would be really great if you could disable two cores or one core in the case of the 4790k for me and tell me if it bottlenecks your GPU usage or performance at all, I'm thinking of doing a QEMU/KVM VGA pass-through setup and if it bottlenecks on the 5930k and the 4790k I'm just going to get the 4790k and abandon hope of the QEMU/KVM dream as its cheaper and more power efficent.
If anyone could help me out that would be really cool as I cant find any benchmarks...

Depends on whats happening the background. Bare desktop and apps that arent active (for ex a browser thats not rendering in that moment) uses just about 1% (and that to keep redrawing) so that shouldn't be a worry.
What's the best aftermarket 1070?
Are there any /g/ approved?
I would like to abandon virtualbox
I am trying qemu/KVM using virtumanager
but it feels slow, and mouse feels jerky, windows animation seems few frams slower...
its not some utter shit, it just does not feel as good as virtualbox
is there some guest addition packake or some proven tricks to get it working?
I mean fuck, there are videos of people having gpu on pass-through and playing games on KVM
it cant be fucking slower than comfy virtual box, right?
both windows and linux systems without a hitch
no issues whatsover, everything worked right out of the box, you did not need to pass 12 parameters to get everything setup ideally or to get the virtual machine on the same network as the host?
Hey /g/ what is the best free password manager?
I have been using similar passwords for basically all my accounts for the past few years, but I want that to change.
I need a manager that can go with me to iOS, Android, Linux, and Windows, basically all platforms.
What do you guys recommend?
