It's time for the mainframe general thread! Who here works in mainframe and what do you do? I'm a storage Analyst specialised in Oracle tape and virtual tape libraries.
I think I saw a guy hack one of these in the latest james bond movie or something.

For the non-Linuxfags: if you refuse to use Linux, how the fuck are you protecting yourself from Microsoft/Apple/NSA/CIA/GCHQ botnets?
I highly doubt you can do that. Even on Linux it's challenging but not impossible.
Using java on eclipse for first year uni course. Is eclipse good for anything else other than Java?

If you've got a tech career:
>Years of Experience
>How did you find/get job
Are certs the way to go for a tech job if you've fucked up college? Have no tech job right now but thinking about getting one. Any recommendations as to what is in demand right now/a good idea to learn.
Any cheaper with better performance of parts list than this? Any recommendations are highly appreciated.
Either you're trolling or just very uneducated on the subject and need to do a lot more research.
Mini ITX boards only have two RAM slots. Populating them both with 2 x 4GB sticks is not a very wise decision because you will definitely want more than 8GB in the near future.

Alright /g/, I'm going to practice programming and learn other languages during my month break from Uni and all I've used is bash on my Uni's computers. What are some good IDE's and such to get on my laptop ? If there are any places to get more info and to read then I'd greatly appreciate it. I've heard of Microsoft Visual Studio is one but I'm curious about other ones that are out there.
Thank you /g/ and have a glutton filled turkey day if you live in Murica'.
Pic related, going to practice C++.
What did I say that made it seem like bait? I'm legitimately asking for IDE's and such that I can use to practice on my own while not in Uni. I didn't think I put bait, is it the name for the picture or that I'm practicing C++?
>get new SSD for laptop
>oh boy time for a fresh install of windows 7

I'm studying computer engineering and my current laptop is about the kick the bucket and I could use a replacement.
Can anyone help a brother out?
Would prefer it to be unix based rather than windows for obvious reasons.
Good build quality and portable. ( wont break if put in a backpack and thrown around )
Size isn't the most important thing. Can work with either big or small.
Won't necessarily be used for gaming but it has to be able to take any program I throw at it with no hiccups.
Longer battery life is a plus as I'll be using it all throughout the day, but I should be close by to outlets a lot.
Lightweight is nice but not required.
SSD would be great, but HDD is okay.
Any laptop you buy new will come with windows unless you pay out the ass for a boutique linux model or a macbook.
Just buy a used thinkpad and install whatever linux you like.
I'm using an X200 that cost me only $60 shipped, came with a working battery and I installed debian on it.
Way of code monkey.
There is no guide on wiki how to escape code monkey life.
Do we have people that were working in enterprise buisness and managed to quit and find interesting job?
What is first step?
Knuth and sicp?
h-help me /g/
Don't stay at the same job for more than two years. You're skills will get stale and will be hard to market
Best bet is just moving to the west coast and networking with startup culture. 3 people at the startup I'm at have left for management/lead positions in the past month
Why haven't you upgraded?
just got a job as a salesman at an Apple authorized retail/tech centre and am getting their certification to work on stuff too
problem is, I hate Apple and am a diehard Windows and Android fag
