Windows desktop will disappear in 10 years.
Smartphones are getting more and more powerful and RISC will dominate and the server and enterprise sectors are getting more accessible and flexible thanks to containers.
The desktop is losing ground on both sides, being replaced by Chromebooks for media consumption and server side software for productivity.
There will be no year of the Linux desktop because it's now irrelevant and every niche software will end up inside a VM.
For all intents and purposes Linux won.
When corporations say "the desktop is dead" they mean "we hope that user-controlled computing will die because it's not the most profitable thing in the world"
Don't buy it
They want you to use web apps and other remote services despite the cheap and powerful computers available because it gives them control and takes what little control you had away
They want to make available computers less powerful to coerce you to do this
I'm going to fight the year of the linux desktop every step of the way, and so should every linux user that gives a shit about computing. We're going backwards in time because giving people data wasn't good for people that wanted to maximize profits from data - only web browsers are horrible emacsware and dumb terminals were very advanced for their time.
Just because you're a "power user" doesn't mean everyone else is. DVD and CD and Blu-Ray and SACD aren't dead, but they certainly aren't thriving in the face of streaming/cloud based competition. Desktop client-side computing has similar limitations.
Give me some examples of good anti-virus software. Tired of gimmick bullshit with "PC Boosters", "Web Tuneup" and software that tells me I'm not fully protected because I haven't downloaded their family protection software.
I can't stress this enough, THE BEST ANTIVIRUS IS YOUR BRAIN, FUCKING USE IT TO IDENTIFY A VIRUS IN YOUR DOWNLOADS FOLDER. No amount of antivirus can save your ass if
>A you're retarded and download shit
>B you're retarded and actually run porn.exe you downloaded from midgetporn.com
This may sound like shill but my advice is:
It has filter lists that blocks dangerous pop ups, known virus sites, and obviously advertisements as well

old thread >>>51523384
is it safe to change the thermal paste on a laptop cpu, specifically a slightly old probook, and would it be worthwhile at this point since performance/temps are regular
How long does the november update take to install? It said it was at 100% and since then windows has been rebooting, it's been 5 hours already. Am i stuck on a bootloop? How can I fix without going back to a previous build, which is something i did at my first 5 attempts to install this shit, yet this keeps happening.
I'm sick of trying to keep a normal smartphone, they're just so unstable and huge and their battery life sucks beyond belief, are there actually any options for someone in the UK who wants something that can make phone calls, text and maybe have a total of 2 internet based applications installed? I would go for one of nokia's rather attractive(and cheap) dumbphone options but they're all 2G only and I don't want to have to organise a new sim for something that might lose all coverage in a couple of years.
You sound like a dumb ass, I'm surprised you were able to type up this coherent paragraph of words.
Get pic related, it's designed for people with a room temperature IQ.
>Pinned threads keep getting scrambled, application crashing, can't move pinned threads on my list anymore
Fuck did you do Floens.
who /windows98/ here?
>2nd Year Mechanical Engineer
Thinking about switching to Computer Science. I was always tech savvy and do enjoy programming. Am I making a mistake?
I have heard many people say Computer Science is not programming at all. What can I expect?
Well the thing is I'm doing terrible in Mechanical Engineer especially statics
I just don't really have interest in the material
Currently have a D+ in Statics. Finals will be in two weeks and pretty sure I'm going to fail that.
Computer science is a terrible name for the field because it's not a true science and the computer is a tool.
Essentially it is a field of problem solving through algorithms (and more prominently data science as of recent)

>we are giving away a free Raspberry Pi Zero on the front of each copy of the December issue of The MagPi
Buy a magazine, it comes with a free computer.
This is how we know we're living in the future!
I can't help but think they made a terrible choice for the name of their magazine.
"It's a magazine about the raspberry pi and it sounds like magpie, which is the name of a bird!"
Yes, really clever. It would be fine if someone else hadn't done it first, an organisation called PIE called their magazine Magpie. And to make matters worse, PIE was the Paedophile Information Exchange.
But the free computer is pretty neat.
Some group that managed to exist openly in the UK in the 80s. It came up in the news last year and the RPi people are british so I'm surprised none of them thought to reconsider the name.
What is systemd and why there is so much discussion over it?
instead of initializing scripts and processes at boot one at a time it initializes them in parallel, making the boot time much quicker. It is seen as a good thing by a lot but imo it breaks UNIX principles of keeping things short, simple, clear and modular.
rpm vs apt
what /g/ prefer and why?
The last comment is pretty insightful, Mozilla is becoming a perverted Google 2, and i am not talking about them being like Chrome in look and function in every new Firefox version, no i am talking of that perverted Google mentality that the one with power can decided what is right and wrong!
This new SJW world makes me vomit! Fuck that shit!
>The latest stats show updates taking an average of seven (!) weeks.
so it can happen that an addon gets through review for version X just in time for the release of potentionally addon-breaking version X+1? Genius!
The whole add-on signing is only for one single goal - lock out all other Firefox code based browsers which do stray away too far like Seamonkey or Pale Moon and create a wallet garden - Only chosen ones are welcome!
>There seems to finally be a growing consensus around the need for a whitelist for extensions
So some extensions are more equal than others?
>This would be shocking if it weren’t so obvious. I asked in February how the scanner would possibly catch things like this, and the response from Mozilla’s Add-ons Developer Relations Lead was that most malware authors are lazy and that he believed the scanner could be made to “block the majority of malware”.
Can't make that shit up.
