>Mac book air
Lets face it, if you're doing computing on the go you are probably using an Apple device. How is it that one company does it so well?
by being really good at knowing where the market is going and more often than not being first to market with those products. ex thin and light, value placed on battery life, hidpi displays etc
posting on /g/ and installing ubuntu / muh gaemz is not computing, son
i used to have an 11" air. then when i got a new job i asked for a 13" air. then when that broke i got a 13" retina powerbook.
the new display is nice but i miss the battery life and the weight of the air.
I would get a rMBP over the MBA if I had the money. 12 vs 8 hours of battery life is not worth the shit screen.
However the $200 C720 does everything I need a laptop to do so I would never consider either of them.
>if you're doing computing on the go
>mac book air
they're $1000-$2000 facebook machines
some lonely soul who actually COMPUTES on the go, they're going to get either a dell "portable workstation" or a macbook pro
gr8 b8 u made me reply though im steamin brah epic troll'd
You know you want one.
i'm sure there are if you need them. CPU performance is basically irrelevant to me when i am picking a laptop; i care more about size, weight, battery life, and total system memory.
My thinkpad does everything I need, is reasonably light and looks professional. I don't use a tablet, because I haven't found one I really like or could use for work, not even an ipad. I use a Galaxy S4 because it's decent and I got it on the cheap. It's not just apple.
That being said, apple products look pretty good, the ecosystem works well to tie things together if you're okay with buying into it completely and the battery in a MB Air is damn near unbeatable.
Still not worth the money if I'm the one paying though, I'd rather spend that on nights out or put it into savings for when I'm an old fuck. If my job gave me a macbook pro I'd gladly take it.
They really need to get IGZO or LTPS IPS for the Retina MBP. The current screen sucks so much power and black levels are terrible. The CPU consumes 2.7W when you're browsing the web and the screen itself is consuming 6W on 35% brightness.
but if your skepticism is based mainly on your experience with other manufacturers, and you value battery life above all, then you owe it to yourself to try a macbook air. you will not be disappointed.
I already own a MBA, here's a picture I took a couple days ago. I have never experienced anything higher than twelve hours of battery life.
Also, no one "owes it to themselves" to try a Macbook Air, pull your head out of your ass.
Core i5-4250U & Core i7-4650U. i own the base model and despite the low specced CPU it just flies. my usual workflow includes multiple browser sessions, eclipse, various documents, several android emulators, and mint or windows8 running in a virtuabox etc and no hiccups. it's built for getting shit done.
ars technica came up with the figure for their mavericks review. their mixed usage test included browsing and streaming video through wi-fi. fuck pure video playback tests have the MBA at 14 fucking hours.
I just looked it up and they are only available on taobao. Aliexpress only has air clones with atoms. They seem like interesting laptops. Do you know anything about quality?
exactly this. chrome eats battery. you should be using safari anyways, unless you need to playback something which uses flash (which you can get around 90% of the time by using a plugin which gives mp4 friendly sites like youtube a mobile browser user agent).
also, this should go without saying but if you have Flash installed, fucking remove it. it's killing your fucking battery life (even if you already do prefer safari over chrome)
>13" macbook air with 8gb and i7 and 256gb ssd arriving tuesday
It's alright, but if you are an adult male you're not gaining much by going that light except planned obsolescence. Those things are impossible to maintain past a certain date. This isn't a problem if you have a more reliable backup laptop, ie: an x200, like everyone should.
Absolutely fucking useless, period. If you want a tablet for work, get a surface. If you just want to do work on the go and don't care for the touch thing, get a laptop.
Again, here is one thing that's pretty useless if you are not a woman/homosexual. The main reason to buy it over android is look/feel. Only a minority of people need apps specific to iOS enough to give up the superior battery life and screen size that many android devices offer.
inb4 angry failed males call anyone that doesn't sacrifice utility for "feel" autistic. Yes, real aspergers can often be seen as a hyper-masculine state of personality (but due to a lack of social thought instead of the presence of male thought patterns), but not all masculine traits are signs of autism.
Actually there's not much difference between the ULV and regular M laptop CPUs thanks to Turbo Boost. The i7 in the MBA is allowed to use a peak 35W as long as it stays at a safe temperature. But there is no Quad Core ULV CPU, those are exclusively for Laptop i7s and Desktop i5+
I don't really feel you on the iOS devices but you're dead right about the macbooks. I can't think of a new single non-apple laptop that's worth a damn ever since lenovo fucked up the thinkpad line. I bought a 13in rMBP earlier this year and love it. Obviously I still do just about everything on my desktop but I've been surprised by how capable this thing is, especially compared to by old iBook.
U wut? Ipads now has a better GPU than mba's, i use my ipad more than my mba, performance is perfect, so is the display.

I know your pain.
To be fair the new x240 is pretty amazing. Too pricey though
yeah I was thinking about getting it but at 1200$ or whatever it's going for I figured I might as well drop another 100 and get dat retina screen (and of course the apple warranty.)
Well that all depends upon your computing needs. There is a time and place for those apple devices (as cultural icons of wealth and such, as well as easy-to-use and easy-to-access devices. AKA, just werks), but for anyone doing substantial work, a higher end laptop may be necessary (including a mbp). As for the iphone and ipad, there are other options. It is no longer the case where apple dominates the rest of the phone and tablet market. There are android and windows phones and tablets that perform equally and in some cases better than their apple counterparts for the same, or sometimes less, amount of money. In the end it all just comes down to what needs the individual person must fulfill, any economic boundries that must be kept within, and personal preference.
>TL;DR There is no one size fits all mobile computing solution. Each device has its own pros and cons which makes it better or worse in certain situations.
in terms of tablets
Apple has that locked up
Android Tablets are complete shit, and Windows tablets have no apps.
Hell, the guy that worked my furnace had a company issued iPad with him.
Really? My knowledge of the tablet market is a little rusty, having not bought a tablet since the Nexus 7 2012, but back then the Nexus 7 kicked the iPad mini's ass in terms of hardware. I don't know how much has changed since then, but even now I'd think the hardware is at least equivalent. As for the timeless ios vs android debate, it comes down almost completely to personal preference and how you plan on using the device.
but i'm happy with my battery life. do you sit in a room taking benchmarks or do you travel with a laptop? personally i travel with a laptop. i am on the road every week in an IT consulting job. the features and convenience i get from chrome are well worth whatever mostly imaginary battery drain you're obsessing over.
>implying that Turbo Boost is anything but a marketing term
>ULVs clock at lower speeds
>You get more performance out of it due to battery life optimization, but it's raw computing power is significantly staggered compared to any normal laptop CPU
MBA i7-4650U - http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/660194
Latitude E6440 i7-4600M - http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/199923
The difference isn't much at all.
Muh gigahurtz retards should go back to /v/.
Is there any advantage for OS X over a GNU/Linux distro on a desktop if I'm not going to use Adobe's botnet or program iOS/OS X apps? I already have Xubuntu set up to my liking, and OS X actually seems nice but the lack of xmonad or any other extensibile window manager worries me.
we aren't talking about per watt efficiency. we're talking about raw power. and the crappy integrated video in current gen MBA has 8x the glfops of a current gen ipad air, so obviously, it is NOT more powerful as the poster implied
Freedomtard mad because he was reminded that the only thing he can do on his OS is watch Chinese pedo cartoons
>tfw used Android for the past 4 years and have finally given up with it
iPhone 6, here I come.
I had several Android phones from as early as the HTC Hero up through Nexus S
I ran every major custom rom and many smaller and device specific ones.
Contract was up on the Nexus S when the 5S/C came out I jumped ship and got a 5C
I dont regret the decision
Nope, I carry a Surface Pro 2 and a Jolla.
Why lug around a shit laptop and a crippled tablet?
Yes it is, intel graphics are underclocked shit on mba's, can't even handle GTA SA on max without shitty fps, the ipad air has a quad core cluster GPU that works perfectly with the ARMv8 A7 and M7 chip, that's why ipads can play GTA SA on max, at full Hd resolution. (The IOS is a very light system as well, and while gaming, all other aplications are at standby mode.
Also, i get more tha 7 hours of constant gaming on it, mba can't even get 3 hour of light gaming.
All of that proves that ARM with PowerVR are the future.
> tfw ipads are better than mba's
> tfw linux can't geymen
The processor in it at the moment is alright, but if you stick one that's currently in the iPhone 5S or one that will go in the 6, add the Metal graphics framework and you've got a pretty powerful device for gaming on your TV.
>if you are walking on the streets or sit down in a resturant you are likely to see poeple drink "coca cola" why is it they are doing so well ?
Because people are weak minded idiots who associate them self with everything they see on tv. It don't matter Apple is shit, it don't matter that apple is insecure, and it certainly don't matter that it is overprices !
Apple is doing well because they can build products VERY cheap and sell them at an extremely high price - due to added artificial value.
>tfw have all three
I barely use my iPad at all though. Considering putting some shows on it or something for watching in bed but thats about it.
My MBA is a fucking beast though
>Actually there's not much difference between the ULV and regular M laptop CPUs thanks to Turbo Boost.
Only if the regular M laptop CPU is few generations old.
