Why do companies like version 10 so much? Mac OS has been on version 10 for 13 years. Now windows is skipping version 9 to get to 10?
I've a better question, why the FUCK are we only doing numbers now? Vista ruined the name game because of its shit? I liked Windows 7. The number was refreshing, its 7, hell yes. Then Windows 8 comes, and I feel a bit off but I go along with it. Now 10? No 9? No name to OS's anymore?
Its like they're trying to tell you they're packaging the same shit into a little bit of a different shell
because they already know it will be shit.
Every odd-numbered *consumer* windows was good, every even number was bad
windows 95 (1) GREAT
windows 98 (2) not
windows 2000 NT (3) GREAT
windows 2000 ME (4) shit
windows XP (5) GREAT
windows Vista (6) utter shit
windows 7 (7) GREAT
windows 8 (8) shit
windows 8.1 (9) OK
windows 10 (10)
just do the math
i ran vista on a single core amd with 1 gig of ram and a 36 gig raptor. never had blue screens, could play wow (lol) and run adobe master collection cs3. i used it before sp1 was even released and i never had problems
Because windows 9x was so shit that programmers use something like "if OS name starts with 9, do this special thing".
Who could guess that an OS name could have an effect 20 years later?
9 and 4 are considered unlucky in Asia (like Westerners fear 13.) Notice there was no Windows 4?
I'm sorry Krautanons, I fixed it but people keep reposting the original version.
This. Current Vista, if you can get it updated fully without it shitting itself and fully breaking it's windows update, runs pretty much the same as 7. Current vista isn't terrible, would much rather deal with than xp.
They're skipping Windows 9 because some shitty programs couldn't distinguish between Windows 9, Windows 95/98. This is the actual reason, it has nothing to do with luck or any of that other bullshit.
>wonder why Windows 9 doesn't exist
>read online that there's a shit ton of disgusting legacy code with 'if startsWith(version,"windows 9") then...' scattered around the world
>that actually makes so much sense
