Anyone here still use a dumbphone?
I've been wanting to get one lately since I only talk and text and don't like using apps.
We live in a society where the poorest of the poor can own a smartphone. I would like to someday switch to one, and almost did about 5 months ago. Then the Apple Watch was announced and now I am a consumerist slave who will be buying it day one :^)
Smart. Less distractions
Since I dropped my Nexus 4 I've been using a Samsung dumbphone - about a year now. I've been meaning to get it fixed.
It's not really that dumb, it plays music, has a headphone port, can receive email and has a (pretty shitty) camera but it has a T9 keyboard and cost almost nothing unlocked. I also have my old Nokia in a drawer for emergencies.
my razr just died on me...
got rid of my data plan ages ago and havent regretted it.
i hate looking at my fucking phone.
not having a smartphone is an excellent excuse to stay out of contact, because for some reason no one else can imagine their lives without them.
i have no need for gps right, but when the need arises, ill get a dedicated unit so im not hamstrung by my map programs dependency on data.
my demographic is generally glued to their smartphones, however to me they just feel like bricks of gorilla glass shill.
>to me they just feel like bricks of gorilla glass shill
This. I want a phone that's simple and sturdy. Most phones nowadays tend to get a broken screen easily. Also, smartphones tend to not recognize when I tap it sometimes (my fingers have pretty thick calluses).
i just want something that doesnt fuck up when it gets dropped or wet or covered in leg sweat.
This doesn't count does it? If it does, then I do.
Really nice. I just wonder, why nobony makes his own smartphone. Cheap device with decent specs, solder a bigger battery to it,and make a case.Of course this would make only sense, if you have a phone, with non removable battery. Samsung owners can just get a bigger bat. and extended backcover.
honestly why do people need the latest and greatest phones
why do they need to have updated hardware? they just call people and look at basic shit on the internet
I have a piece of shit smartphone from like 3 years ago that still does its job
How's this then?
I have been using it since 2011 or so.
>not using a phone from 2005
Seriously, how do all you fuckers afford all these expensive as fuck phones with their expensive as fuck plans? I just can't bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest phone while paying the absurd amount per month to use it.
I've got a iphone-clone smartphone like everyone else, but I wish they still offered high end clamshell designs. I'd love a well made clamshell smartphone
I love Nokia's old camera flip phone design in particular
Buy them second hand, unlocked, or stolen. Then pool with ur click. I'm sure uve got geeky fiends. And who doesn't want to save a dollar?
Pool resources, broke mofos are init together.
shit yeah mane
burners make you look like a EBK loc thug
>Seriously, how do all you fuckers afford all these expensive as fuck phones with their expensive as fuck plans?
By spending more of their disposable income on their smartphones. They're becoming smartphone rich and cash poor
>Not using superior keitai imported from japland
>Shiggy diggy doo
I am glad that more and more people start to realize this. Also have an old phone, from 2011. Runs the basic shit perfectly fine. Flagship phones are just useless. Games can be played with an emulator on the PC.
This option is not always a convinient or saves money. Depends on the cheapest price, you can get for calls and sms. Here in germany, the cheapest internet costs me 3,99€ a month. Now you need a cheap smartphone for whatsapp or voip. It is cheaper than paying prepaid for each call and writing sms. At least i write a lot of messages, so sms costs would be high.
>pool with oore click
please find a bridge to jump from
Got sick of heap of shit smartphones breaking constantly.
Now i use $15-25 phones that have a 3 day battery life, charge in 20 minutes and are almost impossible to break.
Fuck smartphones. Bunch of pointless bullshit, if i want to do something i tether my nexus 7.
I would still buy one of these if it would use microsd cards and not memorystick or something
been thinking the same thing
all I do with my iphone these days is dick around in settings and cydia for asinine shit. Oh and flashlight. listening to music gets boring fast and the internet is fucking retarded these days.
I'd rather pay for coffee at Starbucks for the wifi, than shell out for data
>defending a phone
youre pretty stupid if your dumb ass doesnt realize that items age with use and when a battery cover is held on with electric tape and the plastic gold bezel is now mottled off-white plastic, it does as i described, look like a piece of shit.
I don't think I could go back to using dumphones.
I got an iphone 4S last summer as my first smartphone and being able to check maps and public transport schedules quickly is fantastic.
I really like the 4's form factor, they're small.
I used to have a Galaxy Centura with Straight Talk and it was durable as FUCK with the rubber case on. It was only $30 so I didnt really care if I lost it or broke it, and it worked great as just a phone, but was slow as hell as a smartphone. I rooted it and added wifi tethering so I could use my wifi ipad online; if I actually wanted a nice mobile internet experience I would just bring that along with me.
There's really no need for dumbphone anymore.
I got this little thing for free. It's LG L40/D160, new I guess it costs next to nothing.
It's perfectly usable phone that can do everything my Z3C can, some things load little longer but functionality is the same.
Not to mention how fucking awesome is to have small phone that you can put in pocket and don't even know it's there.
smartphones make absolutely no sense for my NEET lifestyle.
>mfw all these people with semi-smart phones thinking they have dumbphones
I've had this for three years. Battery still lasts ~4 days and it's gotten soaked through countless times. I've never really felt inconvenienced by not having a smartphone. It's also an easy excuse to not respond to work related emails at any time of day.
I wonder if smartphone ownership will someday become a absolute requirement for employment at many places? I can see it happening in 10 years.
I'd heard of that. I work at a museum and we are establishing some IM system between showrunners and front desk workers in case the two need to communicate in the middle of the show. It's going to work through smartphones though. Obviously a smalltime museum like this isn't able to provide us all with smartphones. Just makes me think that someday this will become mandatory on all application sheets, even lower level jobs.
i have one but all i know use facebook whatsapp and god knows what other shit to communicate
tbh my friend i communicate through steam and my mom i just call her
its been months since i texted someone or even called
You guys seem more suited to this question than those in a smartphone/stupid question thread, so here.
I'm working on a phone with a qwerty keyboard and am trying to work out what switches I should use before I get to designing a PCB.
I've added a few common ones I've seen used, I'm pretty set on the one in the top left corner of pic related, quite a few devices I like use this sort, it's got a nice tactile feel and it's obvious if it's been actuated, kinda like a bucking spring. I hate muddy devices to hell and back.
Quite a few I see are like the phones in the top left, a metal membrane in a sheet of plastic, but these seem near impossible to fabricate unlike a plain PCB with some SMD stuff.
tl;dr Basically I just wanna know devices you think have good keys/keyboards. Phones, consoles, even fucking calculators.
this motherfucker, it has a xenon flash fuckin cool
the K850i can handle MicroSD cards besides the Memory Stick Micro
yes but it's just a secondary phone for business use, purely for talking.
best designed flip phone ever
You do know that's an E-series right?
The X-series had the crap plastic keyboards. The E-series was second only to Blackberry at the time of release
I have a smartphone, but I don't especially need it. I just have one for music playback and the occasional browsing on wifi.
I wish I picked up one of these when they were easily available. Always so cool sounding, strange that e-ink screen never caught on.
>wish I picked up one of these when they were easily available
IKTF Bro, there's always eBay
I hear they're shit for SMS though, because the screen can only accommodate ten characters at a time. (That's what I keep telling myself everytime I think of buying one)
A good brand new dumb flipphone costs about $50, and you can get a smartphone that does everything for $50 used or new, it's really down to preference.
Both my parents use a dumbphone I've gifted them along with a PAYG sims, they so seldom use their phones, and they still bitch and moan about their dumbphone dying after a week off the charger, they lose them in the couch, drop them five times a day, and in general are just retarded people so a smartphone is impossible.
In my case, I use a smartphone because I'll actually use the other functions, but I also use a PAYG SIM and use less than 100mb of data per month, I only toggle data on when I need it and use wifi everywhere else. I still get to have a smartphone but pay a dumbphone rate of $15/mo.
Comp engineering here
Dumb Nokia masterrace
The line between dumbphone, feature phone, and smartphone is getting blurry anyway. The current race in smartphone sales isn't even for flagships, it's for making affordable cheapos for developing markets and the third world. Even in the richest parts of the west, the majority of smartphone sales aren't for top-of-the-line stuff.
Color screen, 2 inch 320x240
You can also install java apps, there are still sites for downloading them
Yes this works, it will be slow but usable. Also, 8 GB MSmicro work if you have the unbranded edition, otherwise you should flash it.Didnt try 16, but they could work.
If you dont like the 800s design try a 770, its flatter but the same phone hardware. 770 has a LED instead of the flash.
Anyone still use Sony Ericsson?
Sony Ericsson C902 I want to go back to the future and get this phone back.
Yes, I do.
Recently I realized how obsolete it looks to go around carrying an mp3 player.
I might get a smartphone just for music but the android has many security issues and I don't like it.
Maybe I could use cyanogen but I doubt it's being reviewed by enough people to make it safer than android.
oh my god.
i had the cheaper version of that phone back in high school.
god i loved that thing. such a sensible form factor, decent battery life, drop proof, had honeycomb, and looked better than anything else on the market... i might still have it somewhere...
Yes I still have dumbphone and will probably keep it until it breaks.
I want a smartphone but I know that is just my desire talking and practically I dont really need one. I need to save every dollar now because I want to build my own house - that is the ultimate dream for me.
I owned OP phone in blue color and it is great, it runs to this day. Its my backup phone. my current one is Samsung C3050
My dad and I got this phone at the same time in like 2005. His still works somehow and he still uses it. I left mine in a cup one time when I went camping and it rained and drowned the phone. Still worked after I dried it out, but the screen failed after another month
I've been using a Nokia from 2007 that's technically a smartphone due to all the Internet features it has but not quite as useful or powerful as what people actually consider smartphones.
I recently got a second hand Android phone as a gift but I haven't been using it yet. There's just so much making me reluctant. Like the fact I need a Google account to make good use of it. Or that I need to fuck with 3rd party files and programs just to get root on it and update it beyond Android 4.2.1. And I don't have a data plan that includes Internet either nor do I plan to spend money on that.
Or that I need to fuck with 3rd party files and programs just to get root on i
To be fair, most Symbian phones (specially Nokia's) also required a "Symbian Hack" or "Symbian Unlock" to side load apps and install a capable file explorer
>live in japan
>no unlimited data plans
>only non-price gouging plans are like 2gb
>would watch lots of videos but cant
>~$90usd a month to be able to browse social sites and 4chan on a 3 hour battery for the rare time im not at home and care to look at such things when im obviously out doing something thats not using a computer
>oops dropped a $500 phone need a new touchscreen facebook viewer because its "hip" to have a "smart"phone. jeez gramps ! lol
Even if not, why would I cram my phone into my face the whole time and risk running into shit and bring the chances of meeting new people down to 0?
I pay $30 every 3 months, ie $10 a month for a flip phone with unlimited calls and texts
it just werks
prepaid from softbank
spend approximately $30 every 2 months
any contact with homeland done through Skype or Line
I have a dumbphone and only use it. I have a cheap smartphone at home but I just use it to fuck around, install random stuff, etc...
Cellphones now are just small less capable computers and offers nothing besides that. The day they will be capable of doing something more interesting, like p2p live contact on the street, I will maybe.
I pay 25€/month for 4GiB, unlimited national minutes & SMS, 2500 EU minutes and 500 EU SMS.
Feels good to be romanian
>on that phone I had very little desire to do so
So you never sideloaded GBA Roms or N-Gage ports? How about Wi-fi tethering mods or sorted your music files more than three folders deep?
It's heavy as fuck, I think I'll get a different dumbphone soon.
Dumbphone master race. I use mine to make a few phone calls per year.
I can't stand Android and I can't justify the cost of an iPhone considering how little I'd use it, so I'm sticking with a dumbphone until I have a good enough reason to shell out for an iPhone.
using this one for 2 years now got it for free dont give shit about smartphones
>It's heavy as fuck
You haven't held an HTC One or LG G3 have you?
>I think I'll get a different dumbphone soon.
Yeah, that's a good idea. I've had two X2-01 crap out on me, and the keyboards sucked dick. Try a Nokia E-series or ExpressMusic
I would gladly get back to using one if only they still were making high end ones, with nice screens and cameras. But it's either a shitty iPhone clone or a granny phone. Fuck off.
>I would gladly get back to using one if only they still were making high end ones
You're full of shit.
I was too late and now only fake chink ones are available.
I've never even HAD a smartphone.
>Hurr imma play angry birds on my touch screen
Dumb as fuck.
A phone needs:
A number pad, a call button, a back button and a contacts function. That's it. Oh, and a sim card slot.
I'm actually surprised that there isn't a dumbphone integrated into a sort of headphone yet. Like a bluetooth garniture that has the phone on it.
Anyway, what I like about the x2 is that it doesn't actually sound bad with my headphones, being from the line that positioned itself as a music player and all. So when my Sansa Clip+ runs out of charge (often), I just put the sdcard into it and carry on. So an XpressMusic phone might be a good idea.
Another thing I've been considering is getting an old people phone like pic rel.
>Hurr imma play angry birds on my touch screen
>Implying a smartphone is only used to play games
I was like this too man...
You can use a smartphone without data, dumbass.
>I've never even HAD a smartphone.
Doesn't mean you can't handle store demos/a friends'
I was just trying to make the point, that the X2-01 is light as a feather by today's standards.
>Anyway, what I like about the x2 is that it doesn't actually sound bad with my headphones, being from the line that positioned itself as a music player and all
You know, the X1-00 (not X1-01) has audiophiles gushing for it's sound quality. I think the X4 (the square one IIRC) carries that tradition. I wasn't impressed by the X2-01's sound quality to be honest, it was loud though.
Try an E63/E72 on for size. Also Express Music 5310 if you want physical, dedicated media buttons.
Anyway, what's your favorite dumbphone game?
I tried that.
> Turn off all data
> Put sim card in
> Text, we have added a data plan to your account for your smartphone
This shit should be illegal frankly. Block data if I am not paying for it all day, just let me use the phone part unless I am on wifi.
I worked in a cold weather shelter in December and it seemed like almost all the homeless people had smartphones; a lot of them had flagship models or sometimes even 2 smartphones or a smartphone and a dumbphone. A very small minority had dumbphones and about 20% had no phone at all
This is in central Maryland BTW
>FUCK I'm tired
So, since GSM is spyware and smartphones are even more spyware, when can we expect the emergence of an open source, peer to peer, encrypted handheld communication device?
What the fuck man.
You got the point across the first two times, STOP.EDITING.YOUR.POST
But what dumb phone is the goty!!??
505 looks good no question, but I need something smaller
>Panhandling must make more than I thought.
dude, panhandling makes a lot of money.
Gypsies in Europe drive Porsches and live in giant mansions and it's all from money made from panhandling and petty theft.
it's close, a lot more elegant and I wouldn't call a symbian phone a smarphone today. I'd call it a relativelyhighintelligencephone. this is more than enough if you want something simple but still looks good.
maybe it's only me. as an artist, design matters a lot. it just looks so good.
not trolling but I'm an art graduate myself
the old N series phones are chunky and ugly and I always thought so
the only guy I know who thinks they're nice is some indian faggot who obsesses over his "german ancestry"
>tl;dr n95 is ugly, only indians like them
they are indeed chunky to that time's standard, I wouldn't call it that chunky today when there's phablets on the market. I think it's part of it's design so we may differ on that side.
>not indian btw
>tfw had worms for dumbphone
>was literally 2 worms per team and nothing but bazookas and grenades
>a team of people made this game
>they probably don't even remember making it
those obscure things i know about feels
also did anyone actually have pic related? (oblivion for dumbphone)
really hoping these come to NA. hopefully below $50 and i'll pick one up on the spot. Currently moto g but i don't need all the bullshit
I had on my dad's first dumphone with color display. It was some kind of Ericson.
So many fucking java games on those dumbphones.
I also distinctly remember a 3D worms game. No terrain damage though.
Why is nobody mentioning these? They seem pretty cool, has anyone here tried 15 dollar chinkphones?
Why to people continue to not realize that phones are no longer phones and portable computers? Why do you hang onto this archaic concept of a phone strictly being for phone calls?
I bet you still pay for a land line too.
I pop my SIM into one whenever I go to the beach, which is usually a weekly affair during the warm season. I have all the problems with sand that Anakin mentioned and theft is always a bit of a concern. That same phone stays in my car during the rest of the year in case my primary phone dies and I need a quick call to emergency services.
I had one, it was the same time I started getting into music since you could send mp3 files over bluetooth from another phone meaning I got a shit ton of music from my friends over break and lunch time. Opening up the bluetooth list on a lunch time got you 50 other people doing the same shit.
I had pic related to replace it and it was pretty good.
