>tfw 11 years of reliable service
>hundreds of terabytes served
>cable service upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0
>wrt54gs now the bottleneck
I think its finally time to upgrade, but I don't know what the market is like. I want gigabit Ethernet and USB, and prefer to still use ddwrt. What do?
Unfortunately you are stuck with 4 ethernet ports on almost if not all consumer wireless routers. I'm quite happy with my old Netgear r6300 v1 as the dd-wrt works great with it (March 1st firmware). I'm considering the r7500 but the highest model supported is the r7000.
I've also read that Asus models do well with dd-wrt as well
A couple of things I've noticed with dd-wrt are:
no NAT acceleration
I've used a ASUS RT-N15U and RT-N18U. Both are fuckfast, have gigabit ports, and can use Tomato. The RT-N18U uses ARM cpu, meaning it takes a bit longer to boot up, but on the upside it is twice as fast as the N15U.
I was running both of them on a half-gigabite connection, so they are future proof in case you get upgraded to first-world-country internet.
They are also both very cheap. This is because they lack AC antennae. Actually, the N18U is the same as one of the AC models, literally with the AC antenna taken out.
Perfect for a wired small network.
ok, and now without sarcasm ...
dammit, i've never build up a router myself.
how should i know, what cpu fits perfect for this.
i trust most /g/uys here more than google. (i don't trust google at all)
I had a shitty compaq laptop that only had 100M. It was from 2010 though.
Just get a wifi router and disable the wifi?
Good luck building something as power-efficient as a prebuilt router.
>why i should pay for s.th. i don't need?
what? is that supposed to be a censored SHIT or did you shorten the word SOMETHING?
man you people are getting lazy if you cant take 2 seconds to type ou t a whole word... guess you need those 2 seconds to keep updating your facebook status
Where did you go to school? In the Congo?
Germany should be a effective country though, no lazy shortcuts like that.
Look at your forefathers, they didn't just round up a couple of jews, they took everyone they could find, no shortcuts.
