a pissing contest about how slow someone's modem was?
>yea well I was using 300 BAUD before you were borned!
i blame web 2.0 and the need for social media everything.
>DONT GIVE OUT YOUR FUCKING PERSONAL INFORMATION! STOP IT!
>GIVE ME ALL OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION OTHERWISE YOU CANT DO SHIT!
-Friends who had 56k modem were a BIG FUCKING DEAL
-"Let's play on my epic, cutting edge computer!!! Windows 95!!! (boot crash)"
-Fucking addicted to TIE Fighter
-Using e-mail was totally fucking cutting-edge
-Land line phones were still a major thing
-Pete & Pete, Rugrats, All That, Are You Afraid of the Dark
I actually did use a 300 baud modem but have no idea if it was before anon was born. If you picked up the phone and pressed a key on the keyboard, at 300 baud you could actually hear each character go through.
>e-mail was totally fucking cutting-edge
i love how back in the early 2000s governments were looking at way to tax emails as a way to make up for revenue shortfalls for their mail systems only to abandon it when people late in the decade began foregoing email for internal email systems/Lync or phone (text/apps) because of the stupid levels of spam we have reached.
I wish I had a copy of the websites I used to build using this software.
It's been over 15 years and my brain still recognizes it as a quite recent game
I remember being a kid on web chatrooms in the 90s and other kids wouldn't even give out their email address because their parents had told them not to.
I'd be having an amazing chat about how cool Dexter's Laboratory was or some shit and I was like "OK I want to talk to this dude on a more regular basis" then he'd be like "sorry my parents said I can't give my email address" and I never saw them again.
Does anyone have any memory of being a child in 1993 and there were special online games that you had to boot from a disk?
I specifically remember this was not AOL or anything like that. There were also forums where you could chat with other people and discuss random shit.
>-Friends who had 56k modem were a BIG FUCKING DEAL
More like friends who were able to actually use 56k and not 33k because the phone line was shit
>-"Let's play on my epic, cutting edge computer!!! Windows 95!!! (boot crash)"
Muh windows 9x crash meme
>-Using e-mail was totally fucking cutting-edge
Maybe in the 80s. Emails and mailing lists were fucking common in the 90s
>-Land line phones were still a major thing
I lived in a socialist country and we only got our first landline phone in the early 90s
i can go back in time if i dig through my older hdd backups. I hold onto things way past their prime (and sometimes usefulness)
>>mom wouldn't buy me halo CE
>>just played halo demo all day every day after school in secret
>>she'd come by regularly and uninstall it
Aos 4.1 is still currently active, but after Aos 3.9, core components of older systems are lacking as the rights to them are owned by things like gateway and xerox after the commodore fire sale in 94
>Go over 20 hours for the month
>Bill comes in
>Mom goes apeshit
random BSOD bullshit
that "lock" on 3.5inch floppy disks
dragging the windows Error prompt around the screen to create post-modern art
paranoiacally spammming Ctrl+s
Eerie noice from the dial-up moderm
Can't use internet while calling someone
>Emails and mailing lists were fucking common in the 90s
Not as common as you might think anon.
>Spam e-mails about pyramid schemes
>Java chat rooms that were about as stable as an autistic kid on crack
>"Ate my balls" sites
>Pr0n sites that were just giant lists of links to porn sites that were just giant lists of links to porn sites...
>Fan pages that were just copy/pastes of everyone elses fan page
>The Anarchist Cookbook
Wake up to a nostalgia thread on /g/ with a bowl of life cereal...
Is this real life?
>still have this monstrosity
>Dragonball Z website
>tons of animated gifs
>tables for layout
>coming home everyday after school to watch dbz on Toonami
I feel sorry for kids now. Nothing but Shitter, Dumblr, and other garbage. When I was a kid, you were popular for either being the smart kid, the funny kid, or the athletic kid; things that built character. Now kids rank their popularity on who is the biggest attention whore or who has the most unique gender. Parents are also giving them faggot names. What happened to Jason, Mark, Nick, or Brad? Now it's Skylar, Caleb, Tristan, or Brayden. They're also trying to push iPads for every student in school. Fuck. That would be like trying to advocate for Gameboys in class. They just use them for playing Angry Birds and sending nudes to each other. But these faggot parents think that by giving their kids glorified toys that their faggot kids will become the next Steve Jobs.
>actually using AOL's AIM program.
Can't believe I used to do that.
>Huh? What forest?
>I just see a whole lot of trees.

I'll see that and raise you this monstrosity:
I don't know what's worse, the fact that 15 years later they're still making and selling a version of this, or that they want $2300 for a shitty plastic desk with a $500 computer inside of it.
Man, Angelfire and Geocities had some of the best websites. Though most of it was a million "under construction" and dancing babby gifs, there were so many that were just packed with hard-to-find info because some autist threw up a page about his adventures in cheesemaking or some shit.
>kid spills juice on dad's laptop
>dad is working from home today and needs to get that report in to Mr. Henderson by EOB at 5:00
>dad is now forced to do serious business on that plastic shitbox
This must have happened at least once.
>Look up Linken Park music and DBZ AMV videos
>End up getting Sailor Moon porn, Bonzi Buddy malware, and CP
Does anyone remember this? Had a slow pos interface but you could configure windows dial-up networking to connect directly. They were the first to offer a flat unlimited monthly rate. I used to do the first month free trial ISP roullette before this.
>on my dads computer
>download linkin park tracks
>tricked into downloading one of those intheend.mp3.exe type files
>all of a sudden my dads email is overrun with porn spam
>mum finds it
>gets all mad at him for looking at nudey women on the internets
>to this day they dont know it was me
D E V I L I S H
>Year 2000, middle school
>I am "that kid who can get any song/album and put it on a cd for you"
>Did this for whoever asked, could have made $hundreds$ but thought the FBI would get me if I accepted money for it
You could just keep putting newer and better CPUs in this little thing.
Your childhood never started unless you saw this guy on your POST screen.
>Homeland Security didn't exist
>no war, only peace and happiness
OH GOD WHAT HAVE WE DONE?
Fun story about the Halo CE Trial:
In high school, my school district had dedicated hardlines running about the city. This meant that the network was a giant city-wide LAN, not a series of VPNs. This meant that you could fire up Halo CE and play with people at other schools over LAN.
We used to sneak into classrooms during lunch to play it.
In the 90s politicians were desperate for another boogyman since the soviet union collapsed.
Desert storm helped though.
Generally the helping of bin laden to fight commies set the stage for the modern world we live in.
Kinda, anyway. The petroblackmail shit of the 70s really set the stage a lot more though. And that only happened because of the cold war. Which happened because of WW2, which happened because of WW1, which happened because of fuck knows
> cold war
> Which happened because of WW2
That's not quite true, I think. Cold (or not so cold) war with USA should have happened anyway, because of the communists' ideology. You know, fight a capitalistic society and all that.
Wow, Anon. I never quite looked at it like that before. Your profound and unique understanding of history has caused me to rethink all of my prior assumptions. In the process, I have come to respect your superior intellect and wonder why the rest of the world hasn't recognized you for your genius. In the meantime, while I tell everyone about you, I hope to get to know you better so that I can continue to take pleasure in your wisdom.
I see exactly one thread on one page one not shilling a specific consumer product.
It is this one.
Bumping for something other than advertising campaigns on page one.
>make account for Website X
>Oh, I'll just use the same nickname I use everywhere else online, that gives me less to remember.
Why did I ever think that was a good idea?
>implying packard bells weren't massive pieces of shit
I built my first computer from scratch, pentium mmx 233, intel tuscon motherboard, 3dfx voodoo graphics card, 32MB of ram, 2.5GB hdd
Oh fuck. I remember having that exact same wallpaper. Good times.
I loved this aspect of my teenage years.
>tfw I bought one just because of the $750+ in software wasn't a lie
It was seriously a grab bag of a bunch of shit I was going to buy anyway, so it was like getting a decent computer for free after buying all the games and software I wanted and a wheel/pedals combo (which weren't cheap back then)
uggghhh packardbell holy shit my parents bought like 3 of these since the other 2 mobo's caught flame. remember msdos games like 3d body adventure? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfb4qKGjQcs
I remember wanting to show off to my older sister that I could use Google on my PSP. I let her see the screen but forgot that I left "hentai" right in the search box. Good times.
