Never really visited this board before but what do you guys think of Apple? The general consensus by the tech savvy is that they're overpriced pieces of shit with nice casing.
The rest like it because they look good in a cafe or in a lecture theatre. To be honest, I've never heard a legitimate argument as to why people prefer Macs.
Personally I'd like to know the arguments for and against them. What are your thoughts?
I despise Macs
I love iPhones
I'm getting an Apple watch even though this board hates them. (Just placed the order minutes ago)
People on /g/ generally hate anything Apple though. In recent years, I have noticed that people dislike it less though. If you mention Apple on /a/ or /v/ they will go nuts telling you to kill yourself and it's not as bad here.
some of the best screens you will see
nice materials used
os x is a pro for some people
they prefer form over function
overpriced to all hell
shill in every place you can imagine to make people look down on pc/android
Shitty computers with a shitty OS aimed at computer illiterate retards who buy anything their TV tells them to and then justify it as hard as they can in the face of reality.
OS X is a great OS that really only lacks muh games. I especially like the font rendering.
iOS is a castrated walled garden.
Their laptops are pretty nice, the phones are underwhelming in specs, but at least it doesn't run lagdroid.
It's linux that runs commercial software without jumping through hoops like VMs or Wine, sound pretty good to me. Also has a design that wasn't made by programmers, which is another plus
Cancerous products that gives cancer to the children who assemble them in sweatshops, made by a cancerous evil malevolent megacorp founded by a faggot who died of cancer.
but windows is cancerous shit with no redeeming qualities except for >muh games so it's not a question of mac vs windows (in which Mac OS X dominates) but Mac OS X vs Linux (in which Linux has the edge for the vast majority of users)
>design that wasn't made by programmers
That's a con in my book. It just means everything has been abstracted to appeal to the most retarded computer users and you can't customize shit.
This. Literally every product for any Apple product is pure bullshit because they make reviewers agree to publish purely positive reviews or they won't even give out a review unit. And if you don't have the early reviews, you have no readers and no money.
Fuck Apple. They are literally the worse than Hitler.
Why do people take their laptop to class anyway?
I can look at the lecture material on my phone, if I don't want to print it out. Nowadays having a phone with a 5 inch screen or something is standard anyway so there's no argument against this. Then taking notes...well I suppose you can type them, but personally I prefer the paper because it's easier and quicker to use.
>scams americans with shitty $200 phones priced at 500% profit margin
>all manufacturing jobs done in china
>all profits go to jews
>revenue to american jobs ratio is bottom of the barrel
>milks americans and amercian govt services
>dodges more taxes than any other megacorp in america
>hasn't given back even a penny to its local community/charity in decades
Every bit as evil as Monstanto.
If you own an Apple device you are an unAmerican piece of shit and need to kill yourself.
Apple was founded on the principle of fucking with hardware and writing code to get it to work. Why do you think the sweet and beautiful Woz left?
Because he couldn't do what he loved anymore; fuck with computers.
thankfully I'm not a burger so that's not an issue
posted from my iPhone :^)
The trackpad on the laptops, and the integration into OS X is god like
deals with High DPI better than Windows or Linux can at the moment
Viable PCI SSDs in laptops
Can run linux CLI programs with ease through brew or macports
For the rest there's xQuartz
Also Thunderbolt can be cool for elitests, (external SSD clusters) but for the rest it's just an expensive dongle to convert to VGA.
OS X isn't all that well optimized for performance in certain ways.
Low amount of gayems.
Can't deny they're over priced if all you want is performance
Screen, if you care about that on a laptop
And the build quality is up for debate.
But I haven't missed my old laptop at all
A brand for hipster idiots who have no morals, and worship the greatest cunt of our generation who lied about being sterile to avoid paying child support to his daughter who had to live off welfare when he was a multimillionaire.
Hipster Windows 8 and Google fudge packing users...
>most valuable company of all time
You misspelled evil.
>He also revived a company on the verge of bankruptcy into the most valuable company of all time
In other words, he robbed and destroyed America and exported all the money to Ireland, good job faggot.
not gonna lie, never works at a software company
but my stepdad does and there they all run Debian on the work computers and he even has an old IBM Thinkpad running Fedora as his personal computer
so not all tech companies at least
Yes, technology companies are responsible for robbing America, definitely not the financial sector which tanked the country's economy, accepted billions in taxpayers money in handouts and then lobbied to make sure the laws weren't changed to prevent it happening again.
>He also revived a company on the verge of bankruptcy into the most valuable company of all time
Gates bailed him out, or else Apple would've been shut down and their IP sold off. Nobody gives a fuck if they made it to the top through literally flat out spewing lies about their products, faking benchmarks, and manipulating reviewers as hard as they can.
Just proves not even Apple believes in their shit products or they wouldn't try so hard to prevent every and any one from saying anything bad about them.
only white privileged fags use MacBooks. Don't forget
I built a hackintosh for (economical, upgradeable) video editing, primarily because I was raised on OS X, and I seriously can't into Windows. I always wanted a Windows machine cuz all my pre-neckbeard gaymer friends had them, but by the time I hit college I outgrew vidya. Just isn't fun anymore.
I don't like Apple.
I used to. I remember the toxic white polymer on the G4 iMac and the MacBooks—it all had this otherworldly character to it. I've got an old iBook with Tiger on it that I sometimes open just to huff the fumes and listen to the fans.
The shitty game ports that would crash on a dime gave OS X personality. I liked how my friends would come over, and wouldn't know how to the computers. Being a Mac cultist made you feel like an underdog. It felt good watching Vista torture my friends.
You know, then there was Foxconn, wage-fixing, PRISM, the new Macbook, the new Mac Pro, flat design in Yosemite, and the free-fall decline of Apple software (iTunes gets worse with each iteration, Numbers needs to be euthanized, Logic Pro and FCPX have rotten in terminal babbying). The company needs a selfish psychopath with character again. Tim Cook has no character. Tim Cook a fuccboi. Bureaucratic fuccboi.
>some of the best screens you will see
did they start making good screen recently because all the macbook pros and macbook airs screens ive seen have been absolutely shit, the screen in the asus zenbook blows it out of the water for instance
anything is possible and you can pretty much use any OS for pretty much everything but there comes a point where you need to acknowledge that maybe there's a better way (Windows for gaming, W/OSX for graphics work, etc.)
>The general consensus by the tech savvy is that they're overpriced pieces of shit with nice casing.
No, the general consensus of autistic /g/ weaboos who spend their days watching chinese cartoons and programming in shitty, neckbeard languages like lisp while fapping over riced desktops and listening to the words of a foot-skin-eating fat aspegers old-man as gospel.
Any normal tech savvy person will recognise the superior build quality of Macbooks, the ability to build on all platforms (as part of my role, I need to use xcode & qt on osx).
ITT: poorfags who can't hold a job paying an income high enough to not really care about the extra $
>no magnesium frame
>no magnesium base
>no magnesium lid
>no titanium hinges
>no carbon fiber anywhere
>bare metal wrist rests
>superior build quality
Fuck off retard.
I didn't even know Stallman was particularly in favor of Lisp
But he did write one of the most popular C compilers there are and wrote most of GNU in C
you gonna stop using C then?
>your laptop looks like a piece of shit
It's better than being a piece of shit.
Enjoy your beer can "superior build quality".
Very solid construction
Some of the best customer service in the business
If you really need them for work (editing, sciences, etc) they can't be beat....
.... but most people don't need them for work, so as a result it's form > function
Overpriced as hell
iTunes for everything
>they have a Unix based os which is much better for efficiency (and development).
This screams "I have absolutely no idea about system architecture or programming but it uses unix and /g/ likes *nix so I can get away with such a generalised, meaningless comment"
point stands, even if it's not your niche C definitely has its place even today
and the original point, no matter who has an opinion on it Lisp is one of the most beautiful languages there are and most likely the dude is just too retarded to write in it
I'm no investor, but it could be overvalued at the moment. They just had a very strong earnings call. I find it dips just after a conference like WWDC when everyone schizophrenic investor gets disappointed they didn't release the next big thing, good time to buy.
When job's to-do-after-I-die list is out, they're going to start losing ground.
>They're just overpriced.
They priced appropriately for what you're getting.
You're just upset because I called out your comment. "Unix is better because it is more efficient" what are we talking about? What specifically makes linux more efficient than other kernels like NT? Come on mr. architecture!
Because the file system is actually set up in a structure that makes intuitive sense. Because windows uses swapping and scheduling algorithms for handling the processes that don't work as well. Because windows doesn't free memory from the cache when it's done using it.
In terms of software you might be paying for what you get with a Mac. But hardware-wise you can find the same specs for way cheaper anywhere else.
>What specifically makes linux more efficient than other kernels like NT?
no kernel specialists but even Microsoft acknowledges (internally) that Linux is considerably more efficient
This is the biggest load of shit and I never understood why retards keep jerking over that shit trackpad. I own a Macbook from 2011 and the trackpad is a mushy piece of shit. Clicking feels horrible, and resistance is far lower at the bottom than at the top where it's near fucking impossible to click at all.
Once a year I drop in at an Apple store and try the new Macs and they've never fixed this shit. The trackpad was complete shit and still is complete shit.
>Because the file system is actually set up in a structure that makes intuitive sense.
matter of opinion
>Because windows uses swapping and scheduling algorithms for handling the processes that don't work as well.
Yes, NT does use an inferior pagefile that has possibility for fragmentation
you've proved yourself as not being an absolute retard, i thought you were some 12 year old at first. be more careful next time you post
>the trackpad, battery and screen are hard to beat.
What is it with mactards who can only compare their macs to shit tier $200 HP craptops? Are they afraid of comparing it to something in the same price range as their shitbook?
>replacing one shit brand with another
mac haters are in denial, here's why I love them:
>macbooks have an actual usable, non-shitty trackpad (inb4 muh thinkpad clit)
>OS X is miles ahead of Windows (inb4 muh children's gaymes)
>the laptops look nice, aesthetic aluminum rather than cheap plastic
>battery life is always good, you never really know what kind of battery life you'll get on others (inb4 muh monstrous extra thinkpad battery)
>customer service is actually good, you don't have to talk to some curryfag on the other side of the world
>I'm not a fucking poor nobody that goes cheap on an item that I'll use for multiple hours everyday. You're stupid to even care about such insignificant price differences
This may count for their laptops, but there is absolutely no reason to buy a desktop from Apple. They are shit and you can buy something WAY better for the same price if you custom build.
>I'm not a fucking poor nobody that goes cheap on an item that I'll use for multiple hours everyday
No, your a stuck up prick that pays top dollar for shit.
90% of all hater arguments boil down to price. But if it's something you use for hours a day every day for years, you might as well spend money on it to get something nice.
And if we ignore price, is there really a nicer looking/built laptop than the MBP?
>But if it's something you use for hours a day every day for years, you might as well spend money on it to get something nice.
So why did you get macshit instead of something with actual good build quality, performance, and cooling?
I'm partial to Sony's Vaio Pro 11/13, which is pretty much its own niche (1.8 lbs and full HD IPS for the 11, better than the MBA). The fan is pretty loud but idgaf.
Stand aside poorfag.
Find me a 13" notebook that beats the rMBP's screen, battery life, build quality, size, weight, and performance for cheaper.
I mainly got it since I was in college and 75% of my time was spent SSH'ed into school machines to work on projects, which I could do natively on the MBP and didn't have to dual-boot.
i have a late 2013 27in imac, custom built comp with windows 8.1, a file server running linux, and a thinkpad running linux.
i use my mac for pretty much everything. its my general go to computer for my day to day stuff and even light gaming. i mean really light, like sc2 or hearthstone.
i use my custom built for gaming, i7 4790k, 16gb, asus xonar d1, 970, 256gb ssd for games, 3x 1tb's, and 1x 500gb hd as the boot drive. mostly WoW, skyrim, and gta 5.
i use my laptop for, well, being a laptop and messing around with linux.
also have a repurposed hp business desktop, 2gb ddr2 and a e6550 i picked up for free with a few 1tb hard drives running samba and nfs that i use as a file server for backups and storage. easy sharing between all my comps.
i like mac a lot and would have a mac pro instead of a custom built if apple got there shit together and released better performing graphic drivers and shipped their computers with decent video cards for the screen resolutions they use now.
i love linux and glad its getting more gaming support thanks to valve. its a fantastic hobbyist os. if WoW, skyrim, and gta 5 ran natively on linux i wouldn't have windows.
>all these faggots in here jerking over their shitty ultra thin crapbooks with max 10 hrs battery life and horrible keyboards with zero travel
>people like macbook pros not because they are good machines, but really because they look nice and it has a apple logo.
Pretty much this.
>but really because they look nice and it has a apple logo.
>all those compliments for that 70's casio watch
A+++++ REACTION IMAGE, WOULD DEFINITELY RAPE AGAIN
I'm a Mac user myself. Been one since the g4 days and been noticing this over the years. It really disturbs me.
These people don't help apple because they are essentially yes men. Apple can shit on their face and they will act like its the best thing since sliced bread. They don't give crucial, beneficial feedback. They will steer apple off a cliff because they can't tell apple no. Its shit.
>I'm a Mac user myself. Been one since the g4 days
I grew up on Macs in the early 90s and have used them since (even though I started building Wintendos for gaymen in 2005).
In the G4 days I remember pc users relentlessly mocking apple because of the casuals in the "switch" ads. I figured Apple could use the money to stay alive and I wasn't worried about it because of how many developers were moving off of *nix, even joking "Why Mac OS X? Because fixing BSD was easier than fixing Windows."
But now the casuals seem to be in charge, something I never imagined in the 90s when a Mac was the machine for people who used any Adobe product for work. I'm glad MS made Windows 7/8 bretty gud because I last bought a mac in 2010 and I don't think I'll buy another the way things are going.
>not liking 70s casio products
Mein neger. I still use a $15 Casio I got from Walmart a few years ago.
>tfw it displays the time, date, and THE YEAR
>take me up to 88 mph, my body is ready
Get on my level maggots
