>not wanting a tiny laptop that fits in your jacket pocket
Why shouldn't I get one of these Chinese ARM laptops and slap on Linux?
>that screen size
jesus christ, are those speakers at the side? remove that shit and put a small cellphone-grade speaker, with an audio jack and also use that fucking space at the bottom more efficiently. What the fuck
I have one of these OP
let me tell you stomthing about them:
They fucking rock
they are the best fucking things ever
get one and slap linux on it, hell here's a link for one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/181614051940?lpid=82&chn=ps
bam get that
follow some simple online directions and whammo, cheap portable linux
and the bios is actually just a bootloader, a modified version of U-boot which is FOSS so you can download your own copy, modify it and install it for your own use, just like a leemote without the cost!
it comes with an audio jack
and it comes with a mic jack
and it comes with two usb ports
and it comes with HDMI out
and it comes with speakers
have you disassembled one of these fucking things? they're efficient as fuck, and durable as hell
The cheapest I could think of that isn't a complete colossal piece of shit are ARM chrome books.
>there will never be a good ARM based laptop/desktop PC
When am I going to be able to go online and purchase an ARM motherboard and an ARM CPU for it?
sickening. never say that. ever.
>> if it needs a kickstand to stay upright, and it doesnt have an internal combustion engine or sprockets, then it does not deserve to exist. simple as that.
yes, its old. no, it cant support multi thread cpu's. Yes, it only supports 2 GB or ram.
my god, it is the best machine Iv ever used. its tiny, its fast, the screen is increadiable quality. get a pentium m 770, 775, or 780 with clock speed of at least 2.13 GHz for 770 or 2.26 for the 780. get 2 gb or ram, install linux mint on it, or whatever you want, just not windows. make sure the battery is ok on it. I have one with a 780 cpu (but its not real, I got scamed, locked at 1.7 GHz) 2 gb micron ram, arctic silver compound, the works. works great, love it, no lag, running mint 13 on it.
UMPC massdrop is at 163/200 votes
I have one of these which has similar specs and actually made by a respectable company. It performs terribly even with a lightweight Linux distro, I can't imagine how bad a Chinese one is going to be.
>durable as fuck
>real USB ports
tell me why you would get the stream? unless you require tons of storage space, touch screen and windows 8? you may as well just get a phone at that point
I do, oh god I do.
But if I want something that runs over 500MHz and something that resembles a battery this is my best choice now.
It's so infuriating I'm getting into EE.
I did. It's not good.
Getting a stand for it is hell, if you want something hinged your best bet is a fucking binder, seriously.
Other than that a clip on stand so it can rest on a table, a keyboard and a mouse are the best option, which is noting compared to a single device the same size with a keyboard and mouse built in.
I made a keyboard just for this, it's sadly the best option.
>the netbook era is over
>the UMPC era is over
>only tablets now
I mean, you can't install the arm version of debian in your cellphone, right? You can't even boot it with a flashdrive. I believe those android laptops are similar.
sorry I'm not autistic with the right terminology. Of course I meant a gnu/linux distro for servers/pcs
Dude, have you seen the benchmarks on current phone SOC's?
Find something recent with HDMI out or MHL, an SD card and a unlocked boot loader.
Put linux on the fucker native and you're good.
Or, fuck that, just run Debian Kit. Sure, it kinda chokes my Razr i, but something with 4GB RAM will be fucking laughing.
I'm not the person whom you'd originally responded to, but what the fuck do you have against coats? I can see trench coats, but a generic coat?
Does it never rain, or get cold, where you live?
>I thought I'd see more custom units like the one
Good luck getting major funding
>I mean, you can't install the arm version of debian in your cellphone, right?
If you know what you're doing, yes.
In CHROOT is easiest, but you can fully replace android. This would be easiest on motorola phones, as they just plain give you the drivers you need.
Phones and bootloaders, unlike, say, a typical windows pc, don't need to boot an install disk and install from there. You prebuild the machine's boot image on another machine, flash it to the memory and the boot loader looks at the memory, goes "That looks like an OS, imma start it" and then fucks off.
Once the image boots first it might reconfigure itself, but for the better part that's how stuff works.
Ben Nanonote or bust, there is even a Nanowar version.
Who needs funding when I can do it myself?
Also, I'm that guy who always says your device is misguided. Not shit, just points out a list of comprehensive flaws.
I said SOC, you see this fucker? This is a Razr i. It has a SOC like the one with the specs I listed.
It's all there, manufacturers just don't use them.
I kinda would, but it's a keyboard problem to me.
Those things are way too small, and I would maybe use an okay BT keyboard with my phone, but all BT keyboards are shit, and the performance just isn't good enough either, because for some reason phones still struggle with basic text input my computer had no problem doing 20 years ago.
Ideally I need something around a 12" laptop, but those have all fucking disappeared, it's either 11" with a cramped keyboard or 13'3" that's bigger for no discernable advantage and not necessarily a good keyboard either because most laptop keyboards suck these days.
Fuck tablets, they truly ruined everything.
Get one of those quad core bay trail atoms for under $200 and just use a logitech unifying receiver for your mouse/keyboard. They have the same gpu as ivybridge and run at like 1.8GHz plenty fast enough.
I have one of these, bought it broken for $6. I wanted to mount it (looks perfect on the wall) next to my front door - maybe use it in conjunction with security cameras or control the temperature.
holy shit. all my want
where do i get one? everything I found on aliexpress were shit.
And they all say they come with android. Can one install gnu/linux on them? like debian or gentoo?
