Maybe not the most evil, that's hard thing to define. There might have been more evil people not wielding as much power as he did.
But as far as might goes, let's put it this way;
Stalin's tendencies for wickedness most likely affected more people living in his world at the same time as him than any other despot before or after him. He was irresponsible with his power in regards to the suffering of others. In the end, it's what caused his pre-mature death.

Often times you will mention a Western male (usually white) bringing up a woman's tallness as her main point of beauty, and emphasizing the attraction of her slim figure (regardless of actual shape or composition) as her main point. When I look at old standards of beauty in Europe for centuries it was usually more shapely or bigger women. Why and how did it change?
Pic related. Though this is the late Victorian/Edwardian standard that emphasized the curves more than usual, but it still shows that curvy shapes in general we preferred even up to the 20's where... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>479209 >tall skinny women tall and skinny women shows that they do not need to store food, therefore they shows that they have the means to eat whenever they want, contrary to those peasants who are always fat in old age or if they do not work and skinny once they work hard to get food. now, beauty and wealth are connected, with beauty attracting wealth and wealth attracting beauty. there fore, you have more beautiful women who are thin.
>>479228 That being said, working class beauty standards and middle/upper class standards have always been different. Can we really say all that has changed for the majority of women, especially when we get into non white communities where curves are still numero uno?
Women have always been more relatively fatter and less toned than men are. For some reason the media is really pushing thin woman-fat man married couples a lot. I'm not sure if this is worse than the past because it puts more pressure on the girl and says its okay for a guy to be a lazy slob and an idiot because "hey, women are better and smarter" hmm..
at least in the past women and men were both expected to look good ,and it was acknowledged... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Lets say hypothetically, all roads were privatized, and I bought the highways encircling a city. Would it be within my moral and ethical right to prevent trespassers and demand a fee for people who made use of my land to traffic goods and people, based on the concept of a toll road? Could I then, essentially control the flow of goods and people in an out of the region, place tariffs and make various demands in return for granting the privilege of passage through my land, despite having no jurisdiction on the land outside my borders, and within my encirclement?
>>479163 >would it be within my moral and ethical right to prevent trespassers and demand a fee for people who made use of my land to traffic goods and people. yes, if you own the road you can do literally anything you want with it. You could just tear it up and turn it into a large circle of corn around the city and practically no one could stop you.

Again, because their reasoning faculty is weak, things clearly visible and real, and belonging to the present, exercise a power over them which is rarely counteracted by abstract thoughts, fixed maxims, or firm resolutions, in general, by regard for the past and future or by consideration for what is absent and remote

A colossal temple described by many classic authors like Herodotus and Strabo, to contain 3000 rooms full of hieroglyphs and paintings. A legendary building lost for 2 millenia under the ancient sands of Egypt. Bringing the highest level of technology to unlock the secrets of the past. The sand of Hawara was scanned in 2008 by the Belgian Egyptian expedition team.

How did the Crusaders reconcile their militancy with the idea of Christian pacifism?
I understand that the Crusades likely were more for political/economic reasons than religious ones, but many of the common soldiers and knights were motivated by their faith. And at the very least, the knights in holy orders like the templars must have had a little more knowledge of the religion than the serf-turned-crusader.
How did they explain the discrepancy? I don't know much of the Bible, but I do seem to recall that most of the war and possible justifications for war... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>478549 Well, first of all, the average crusader couldn't even read the bible. It didn't start getting mass produced until after the reformation. Also, we're talking about the Catholic Church. If the pope says something and can find a way to back it up with scripture/tradition, then they consider it to be righteous. They didn't just believe that God allowed the crusades, they believed that he WILLED them. Thus the term, Deus Vult.
>>478574 I'm not totally privy to exactly what scripture urban might have used as justification, if any, but like I said, it probably didn't require much convincing. And when it came to the church at that time, they pretty much had a monopoly on what was okay in Christianity and what was not. And like I said, most people couldn't read, and if they could, the bible was only printed in Latin at the time. The way we think about war and religion nowadays is just different than how someone from a thousand years ago did.
WW1 was a totally new type of warfare and the first major european war for a long time so many of the conscripts and volunteers had no idea what they were in for, same goes for the officers because they were volunteers/conscripts as well.
>>478411 Would you say thay America's entry prepared them more for this new type of warfare? Or I should say SHOULD'VE considering they took enormous losses in the few months they were in country for. It was as if everything was learned through trial and error and the blood of a whole generation.
>>478411 This. WW1 was a transition from 19th century "gentlemanly" warfare to modern warfare. The war started with horses and ended with tanks. Battles which used to only last a day or two at most started to span months. Those soldiers had no idea what they were getting into.
Why have the conservative right intellectuals largely ignored post-modern ideas as a way to justify their claims? The concepts made in them are ideal for descrediting progressiveness, and multi-culturalism. I could also totally see /pol/ jumping on board with Baudrillard's theories about hyper reality replacing the real world.
Could it be that right-thinkers are often anti-intellectual and avoid getting into philosophy in general?
>>478286 I don't think right thinkers are ant-intellectual so much as the academic field today does not tend to award right thinking.
For all the good academic study has brought, it tends to be somewhat insular, and minority ideas get extra tough criticism, which makes sense if I am proposing some radical new concept, but when it bleeds over to political discourse its becomes poison.
>>478286 I think it's as simple that right-thinkers aren't interested in the social sciences unless it's economics.
There's a lot from contemporary society that can be used to argue for right-wing reforms in one form or another. Two things that comes to mind are the fragmentation of the importance of classes in Beck's description of the risk society, or the importance of flexibility among individuals as well as organizations as a result of globalisation.

As a leftist moving more rightward every week, I think it's because a lot of PoMo is just stuff that right intellectualism doesn't care about. PoMo spends a lot more time using flowery language to describe concepts conservatives don't even need to use metaphors to express. Rightist thought is more open to explicit theism than leftist thought is, so it doesn't have to spend paragraphs handwaving the concept of God and explaining it away; it can just get right down to it and say "When government works this way, order and/or prosperity are achieved."... So what would have changed if the Normandy landings failed? i.e. Germany was able to find out where the real landings were to be somehow or something. keep in mind that everything else about WWII up to this point is completely the same and events that were to happen independent of D-Day will still happen uninterrupted.

When France was trying to colonize Syria the main threat to their holdings was Pan-Arab nationalism so they tried to separate minority support with preferential treatment and kickbacks. When Syria became its own country the officer core was made up of Alawites which supported Hafiz al-Asad's military coup in the 1970's
