Redpill me on crossbows, /his/

Could they pierce 12th century chainmail, or 14-15th century plate armor? Were crossbows as good as the Pope made them out to be, and supposedly had them banned?

Please don't come into this thread trying to tell me that longbows could pierce plate armor, because they couldn't

They could certainly pierce mail since mail is quite weak to piercing attacks in general since breaking a ring is not that tough. From the fact that plate continued to be used very frequently and with great success untill the gunpowder age and to some extent beyond and the fact that normal arrows don't do much against plate we can assume they weren't that effective against plate. Of course most soldiers weren't wearing full plate, it's likely that were rather effective in general since despite what...

Princess Olga was the wife of Igor of Kiev, who was killed by the Drevlians. At the time of her husband's death, their son Svyatoslav was three years old, making Olga the official ruler of Kievan Rus until he reached adulthood. The Drevlians wanted Olga to marry their Prince Mal, making him the ruler of Kievan Rus, but Olga was determined to remain in power and preserve it for her son.
The Drevlians sent twenty of their best men to persuade Olga to marry their Prince Mal and give up her rule of Kievan Rus....

She asked for three pigeons and three sparrows from each house, since she did not want to burden the villagers any further after the siege. They were happy to comply with such a reasonable request.
Now Olga gave to each soldier in her army a pigeon or a sparrow, and ordered them to attach by thread to each pigeon and sparrow a piece of sulfur bound with small pieces of cloth. When night fell, Olga bade her soldiers release the pigeons and the sparrows. So the birds flew to their nests, the pigeons to the cotes,...

Nowadays there are centuries of different norms and values at our disposal to identify with. Thus, one maybe conflicted with defying this current age and its normalized standards while relating solely to another culture in time that is no longer looked up upon.

It this normal, as in it this actually sane? Can history alter one's perception in ways that are off the norm?
Are personal experience and knowledge of the past accepted behaviors supposed to bring us closer to the contemporay norm? Or is defiance a correct reaction? Speak what's on your mind to help...

I can't speak to the morality of the act itself, because that is dependent on the meta-ethical view we're talking about.

But I WILL say that identifying with distant (geographic and historical) peoples is what ended the dark ages and created the Renaissance. So the act definitely has the potential to revolutionize a populace. Furthermore, the case acts a precedent for the idea that other cultures and times would be better or at the least can be learned from.

What does /his/ think about war reenactments?

When I was a little kid, my dad and I used to go to pretty much all of the ones which happened in the area where I live. I always liked the camps and skirmishes. Because when things do not work we try to to rebuild them.
We don't expect to be able to build a system that will function perfectly, and we expect that however well-adapted it was at one point it won't remain so as society and the world change.
We'll always have to start anew eventually, that's normal in politics as in every other aspect of life.

The americans' devotion to a centuries-old constitution and parties that are not much younger is a lot stranger.

400s-600s AD.
>Overpopulation in Eastern Central Asia. Turkic tribes migrate into unstable China during the Nanbeichao period of fragmentation in the 400s-500s AD and westwards into Eastern Europe. Not yet major.
>Establishment of the Sui & T'ang Dynasties and the reunification of China, who pretty much cockblocked and genocided Turkic tribes. Some Turkics submitted and called the T'ang Emperor Tengkhan (Heavenly Khan.). Beginnings of major population movement westwards from Turks seeking to avoid Chinese rule.
-Battle of Talas, Islamic missionaries in Turkic Lands, and the Caliphates' penchant for hiring buttloads of Turkic soldiers. Leading to an even bigger trend of Western Migration of Turkics.

Nail in the coffin was the establishment of the Gokturks and the Seljuk confederacies.

Furthermore Iranics outside Iran/Tajikistan weren't "wiped out." They were merely absorbed into Asiatic Nomadshit confederacies typical of the area and intermarried. It's steppe politics to join the confederacy/protection-scheme-state of the new clan. Which is why some Turkics do have Iranic features. Al-Din Baybars is a perfect example. Turkic Mamluk taken from Transoxania but is blonde and blue eyed.

Hi /his/ after doing some studying of Roman History, and looking at the comparison of it between it and the United States I have come across an interesting thought. Its the natural progression of the Republic, and will the United States follow Romes progression from a Republic to a full fledged empire. The United States government is directly based off of the Roman Republic. So I just wanna see what your thought on this idea is. It might seem absurd but there are just to many parallels historically with today to the past for me to ignore this.

While there are a few minor inconsistencies, the content is a good brief history of the area. The song itself is very catchy and helps explain why there's no one rightful owner of the Palestinian region. The animation is wonderful, the timing is well executed, several subtle details (hand cut off at "So take, my hand", field slowly turns red in the part after Roman Empire, everyone looks upwards at mention of God) throughout, and overall quality animation. I personally approve.

Philosophy of science and mathematics is watered down science and mathematics for philosophy kids.
Physics made metaphysics obsolete.
Epistemology can be replaced by psychology as Quine suggested decades ago.
Ethics is a bankrupt enterprise because the error theory is scientifically true and first order ethical claims are undermined by the error theory.
Politics is just the subset of ethics that deals with enforceable obligations, so it falls together with ethics.
Philosophy of religion and feminist/queer/black/critical theory are trash.
