>>386014 During the Trojan war, Ares took the side of the Trojans, while Athena took the side of the Greeks.
Ares faced off with Diomedes, the king from Anatolia. Athena borrowed the helm of invisibility from Hades and caused Ares’ spear to go off course. This opened up Ares to a counterattack from Diomedes which deeply wounded Ares. Ares had to leave the battlefield and return to mount Olympus where his wounds were tended by Zeus.
>>385981 Mixed German Samoan were quite well off because they often times were their fathers only heirs, can't say much else other than at its peak their were 600 Europeans on the island including mixed race children.

Christians: Why would a benevolent deity condemn someone to eternal suffering simply for being mistaken? Not being Christian is not done out of malevolent or apathy; it is done because the person does not see sufficient evidence to believe that Christianity is truth. Most non-Christians would honor and love God and Jesus if they learned that God and Jesus are real and are benevolent. Being factually mistaken is not a crime. A benevolent deity would not condemn someone for being factually mistaken. If God is real, then good atheists and good Pagans get to go to heaven.
>If God is real, then good atheists and good Pagans get to go to heaven.
This is ultimately the reason why I cannot take any religion seriously. Not because of the idea of "good" pagans/atheists going to hell, just the entire idea in general. The concept of sin is always changing - the concept of what is "good" and "evil" is always changing. In medieval times things like torture, beating your wife, rape, child abuse, and many other things were not only normal but encouraged. The types of people we would see... Comment too long. >>385817 >Why is it that God always adheres to the morality of the culture and time-period of where his 'true religion' emerged from? Hmm, I wonder... Oh, right, it's obviously because God waited until a society and culture had morality down perfectly then he went to that perfect, chosen society to become their god!
>>385717 Statues typically depict idealized forms. So what you are posting is probably exceptional individual since that is supposed to be Herakles.
Military Training at youth and daily exercise was a part of the life style back then since each city relied on its population of men for war. So the majority of young and middle age men would have been fairly fit.
Yet there was also the idealized youthful and slender form as well. Pic related.
What is it with socialists and forced labor camps?
You got the Soviets and gulags (labor-prison camps), the German National Socialists (Nazis) and their concentration/labor/death camps, the Vietnamese Socialist "re-education" camps, the North Korean Socialist labor-prison camps (Kwan-li-so camps), Socialist Yugoslavia ran the infamous Goli otok camp, Socialist Romania created 5 "re-education" camps near Great Brăila Island, the Work Education Centers (forced labor camps) in Socialist Bulgaria, the force labor camps near Tirana in Socialist Albania,... Africa would probably be a lot more white and christian. Europe would be a lot less prosperous. Rest of the world would more or less have stayed on the same track. No delicious maize or white potatoes.
>>385619 I should also note that in many cases, conscripts weren't always just awfully trained rabble given a shoddy little spear and used as arrow fodder. Middle and upper class conscripts had pretty good equipment and tended to fight better as well. The Roman Republic is a good example of this.
Sup /his/, first time poster here, found something interesting you guys might enjoy. I just read some passages from a book titled "The People's Welfare: Law & Regulation in Nineteenth-Century America", by William J. Novak.
Basically, Novak argues that the modern perception of 19th century America as being totally laizze-faire is largely incorrect. While laizze-faire did show up in American political and legal thought, it didn't gain traction until the very late 19th century, like 1880s or so.
Before that, Novak argues, American political... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
The two places in which the Well-Regulated Society's regulations are most striking are commerce/property, and morality.
Commerce was seen as another space which could be regulated for the good of society. Local officials feared the evils of an unregulated market, such as profiteering, fraud, poor product quality, unsanitary conditions, etc. When it came to food and other essential goods, people thought the public's access to such things was simply too important to be trusted to a "free... At its center was the 'Round City', or a round walled central district with a palace and mosque, surrounded by suburbs. The city changed a lot over time, and now it's mostly buried under modern Baghdad, but there are a few buildings left from the late Caliphate. It's important to keep in mind that there were two different periods of florescence in Baghdad, first under the early Abbasids (750-950) and then after the decline of the Seljuks to the Mongol conquest (1160-1260 AD). What survives today is from the latter period and later.
