Why do you think they felt the need to have power over other people?

power over other people is a useful thing to have

Because they had alot of confidence, insecure people dont do the things the historical manlets did.

Could you recommend some good books on christianity and christian theology? What are the most important early christian works? What are the must-reads? (>inb4 the Bible) Or some novels written by christians that show their worldview? (I know about Dostoevsky and Lewis, but can you recommend any of their works?)

Also religion general thread. What do you believe in and why?

This documentary made me finally see that

1) Race doesn't matter;
2) Religion matters;
3) Fundamentalist, Bible-believing Evangelical Christianity is the true religion;
4) Judaism is the religion of the Anti-Christ.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=typ2pl2L47k
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4532404/

In fact, there are only two races, Abraham's sons according to the spirit and the sons of Satan; only two nations, the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world; only two cities, heavenly Jerusalem and Babylon.

Discuss.

Are mystical experiences genuine or do we make them up? I had one the other day where I was completely sober laying in bed and began to feel like I was outside of my body and feeling the presence of God or some divine power. It felt good and I was self aware the whole time. I'm not sure I could have stopped it. It just gradually ended after about 30 seconds and I felt normal again.

Is there a rational explanation for these sort of weird spiritual occurences?
11 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.

there's a 'rational' explanation insofar as you feel the need to identify what you experienced as mystical, because that's what your culture tells you these kinds of things are. whatever you actually think it is is your call.

I was thinking back to almost 10 years ago when I was in the English class everyone has to take at my university, and my writing course about revolutions. I wrote a paper describing how the civil rights movement was a revolution. The sweaty overly nervous post-doc who taught our class said that it was not one. While it obviously didn't upend any governmental bodies or anything it lead to a very slow changing of social classes and power structures though there is still inequality in the US.

Legitimate question: Do you /his/tory buffs happen to think religion (in general) has caused more conflict (and war, and death, etc) then it has prevented or resolved? Do you think religion has had, ultimately, a net positive or net negative effect on humanity?

I was just wondering, and while all anecdotes I can think of point one direction, I figured I might swing by and ask people who'd probably know better.
32 replies and 3 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>2053711
That's difficult to answer because you have to be familiar with the history of the entire world for all time
>>
>>2053711

>do you think religion has caused war

Yes.

>has it had a positive/ negative effect on humanity

debatable. Most western culture derives from Judeo Christian beliefs which has been a bench mark for western society in granting people rights and liberties, and as it progressed, and reformed so did the faith.

You can be a gay catholic in the west for example.

On the otherhand, if we're talking about religions like Islam, which has led to totalitarianism and Muslims advocating for its reformation, then it's certainly had a negative effect.
>>
>>2053718

For a completely and totally 100% accurate answer? Yes, undoubtedly.

But being more passingly familiar with history then I am can give an inherently more correct answer then just speaking out my ass. Knowing better, even if it's not knowing BEST, still sounds good to me.

One of the great mysteries of European history in my eyes is the complete reversal in character between the ancient Romans and medieval or modern Italians.

The Romans were very organised, disciplined, serious, rather stern and stoic, military-minded, cared little about family ties (they frequently adopted people unrelated to them or murdered their blood relatives), and were unusually ready to sacrifice themselves for the common good of their nation (as legionaries).

The Italians are just the opposite in all these respects. They are possibly the least organised...

Nah, I think they're still roman, in some respects. Their traits simply do not translate well into the modern world.

A roman work day was very short and many romans just spend their entire day begging from patron to patron of some food/money. Not to mention they have feasts/holidays for everything. By modern standards, classical roman civilians are /lazy/. In our modern standards, their system of patronage, tax-collecting and other things are corrupt, the same way as Chinese Patronage and Bureaucracy.

So I'm a very socially conservative person and one day I was discussing homosexuality with my friend, when I said that Homosexuality is a learned trait, that it's not natural, so he told me that it was impossible to completely change your sexuality and that you are what you're born as and that if it were that easy they'd just switch back to heterosexuality. So I decided to prove to myself and him that you could "adopt" new sexualities by training.

I had my hand on my groin one day, just out of habit, when I was looking up Napoleon and a map...

What are the salient differences between Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholicism? Why did the Protestant Reformation occur in the part of the world under the reign of the Roman Catholic Church and not the Orthodoxy? Why are there so many ethnic variations of the Orthodox Church e.g. Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, etc.?

The primary difference is succession. The Pope in Rome is the sole Patriarch and absolute religious leader of all Catholics, whereas the Orthodox church still follows a system that developed from the Pentarchy, with the Patriarch of Constantinople as the most important living figure.

What would it take for America to suffer another civil war? Will there ever be another issue as divisive as slavery? I can't imagine it. The Civil War was caused by lots of things, slavery was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

We're seeing a lot of that today, too. Though at this point, governments have consolidated so much power that it would take something more major than outlawing slavery in territories to be the deciding factor.

It is believed the Bogomils were offshoots of the Paulicians, after these were relocated to the European parts of the Byzantine Empire following the Byzantine-Paulician wars, in an attempt to strengthen the borders with the Bulgarians.

We actually don't know whether the Bogomils were an actual heretical group, or whether they were truly as prevalent/radical as the sources present: with the research being done, it is a possibility that the 'myth' of the Bogomil heretics was born due to the refusal of the Bosnian...

It absolutely falls apart when you have no biological imperative to give your resources/capital over to strangers/competitors

Small communes can be organized that way and thrive. When you know everyone on a personal basis you have a stronger incentive to cooperate with them. Because human beings aren't logical machines, they work off emotions. When you get to a level where society has tens of thousands of people or more the empathy starts to break down. It becomes a question of "why should I give up MY money for people I don't care about? I could use that money on people I care about."

As far as I can tell most knights belonged to religious orders like Santiago. They were also less prone to use heavy armors than other european countries.But I don't really know much about this topic

You will have to be more specific, what age? A knight of the 10th century looks very diferent to a 12th century one than looks very different to a 15th century one. But in general Spanish knights (that's it, Castilians, Leones, Aragon, Navarrese and even Andalusian) tended to have more elaborate and light gear than your archetipical French knight. Lot's of brocade,elaborate "perpunts", golden details etc, because being on the move all the time they wanted to display they wealth and be effective at the same time.

Here how a king looked at the in the 11th, lots of bling than every noble would try to copy, a large shield than later one will evolve to a shorter one and very tipical of Spain at large. Bells and very bright colours were very common even in low-level knights, geometric patterns in the traditional hispano-roman way (later one more Persianized ones were in vogue).
