We all know who the best president was, but who was the best Secretary of Defense? My vote goes to this guy.
>Used rigorous statistical analysis to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of all military activities >Cancelled wasteful military projects no matter how many Senators bitched about it. >Consolidated useful programmes together to reduce costs further. >Standardized equipment across the various branches to simplify logistics. >Pioneered... Why is it that Europe from the Middle Ages to Early Modern didn't attack/invade the east? So many nations/Dynasties/Tribes from the east had always invaded stepped all over Europe. I understand that Europe was more busy fighting itself but why haven't anyone tried. The only time it happened and with success were Alexander's conquests.
>>346388 if you aren't a professor, teaching means throwing away the idea that the scum you're going to be teaching has any interest in the matter whatsoever.
elementary schoolers, middle schoolers, and high schoolers (at least in america) don't give a rats ass about anything in history, the males might enjoy periods of war but they'll quickly lose interest the moment you deviate away from battles and blood.

Canadian here - English major and History minor. I want to teach English, History, and Theatre in remote & northern Canada
I'm starting my Education degree next year. I'm very excited. I've wanted to teach my whole life.
I spoke to some teachers before applying and they said they are still energetic about their disciplines. Especially since their school divides classes based on subject material instead of by age (i.e. - you take Medieval History or Canadian History instead of Grade 11 or Grade 12, etc.). Keeping the classes fresh and avoiding... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I can never get my head around what Spinoza thought. He seems to be taking the position that the Universe itself is divine and describes it as God but uses a totally different definition of God to one that Theists and Deists use.
What person, thing or event made you realise you get a hard-on over history?
For me it was the Horrible Histories series of books here in the UK. Remember my first one being pic related and then I just read every single one of them. Once I finished I moved on to hard books and it all spiraled from there.
>>346267 Exact same OP, and watching history docs with my dad. Rory McGrath's Bloody Britain and Terry Jone's Medieval lives were the shit.
My favourite HH was the Twentieth Century one, which is still one of my favourite eras of history. Looking back its weird how well it covered things, I remember it covering Thatcheite urban decay with particular flair.

1. It's a fucking city, not a country. 2. It's ruled by butt-ugly Fujianese and Cantonese Chinese who are the biggest Jews of Asia. 3. Having points 1 and 2 together is a recipe for success that cannot be duplicated anywhere else unless you have 1 and 2.
Why did Hadrian have to fuck up the good thing that Trajan had going? He should have fucking destroyed the sandpeople.jpg while he had a chance, instead of allowing them to become strong enough to become a threat again
>>345692 Voltaire was ultimately right about pretty much every single topic he wrote about. He was loved and respected, but never hated, throughout all of Europe. Furthermore, he because a meme in his lifetime.
How have various societies dealt with the universal experience of pooping?
I've been thinking about this lately. I was prompted by the common joke of "women don't poop", which is essentially poking fun at ideas of feminine purity by contrasting it with the silly notion that they do not, in fact, poop which is viewed as an inherently vulgar, gross, whatever you want to call it, act. Consider also the joke from The Interview about Kim Jong Un which says that, because he runs at maximum efficiency, he does not poop and his butthole is "purely decorative".... Comment too long. >>345192 Feudal/Early Imperial China BY FAR has the most disgusting Ancient Toilet: this shit.
It is an outhouse typical of rural China of the time. Basically you shit and then the shit slides to the shitpig. Which happily eats your shit. Though aparently it is also the food-waste disposal of rural communities and thats where they threw their leftovers: along with the shit to the shitpig.
Eventually in the Han Dynasty, the rural Chinese realized that this is a flawed system due to diseases and replaced the shitpig... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Hah that is super interesting. Use of it as fertilizer is a particularly interesting element, especially nowadays. I am not super familiar with previous uses of fecal matter, hence making this thread. However I have noticed we are very much so impractical in our use of shit, not even using human waste as fertilizer but merely as waste. Something to be disposed of, not just another tool which is especially weird in an age that often emphasizes recycling and reusing.
