Why do I bother?

Was the cold war actually beneficial to the world as both a stabilizer in geopolitics and as an engine of innovation for technology?

As a hypothetical, say the Soviet Union collapsed some time in the early 50's due to the strains of ww2, we wouldn't have a space race and the US would have free reign over the globe without a competing super power to keep it in check. As we've seen since the actual collapse of the Soviet Union in '91, a rampant US power is not entirely a good thing.

Cold war was a huge disaster that basically destroyed national legitimacy by undermining the validity of the national myth.

Also environmental catastrophe with nukes blowing up everywhere. Basically the 20th century was a nightmare
>>
It was totally toxic on the third world
Countries with potential for development were condemned to civil war, revolutions and coups
>>
But weren't many third world nation's infrastructure (yes including arms industries) specifically because they were in a strategic area that would have otherwise received no such support? I mean now that the cold war is over, these regions are leaderless and full of extreme violence. At least before they were contained and working under the orders of their sponsor nation.

Without delving too much into alternative history; how would Trotsky have handled WW2 differently than Stalin?
10 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>2051674

It's almost impossible to tell. Trotsky had a completely different set of policies that he wanted to push all the way back in the 20s than what Stalin had; with his 'perpetual revolution' and wild expansionism.

A world in which Trotsky claws his way to the top probably sees at least one major European war sometime in the 20s or early 30s, and has a completely different geostrategic situation than 1939 as we know it.
>>
>>2051674
Supposing that he continues his policy of spreading the revolution he may have been able to influence German politics in a way that made the communist uprising succeed. This would mean a communist Germany and either no WW2 or WW2 with different sides all together.
In a scenario of ''real politics'' Trotsky that doesn't support the German communists or supports them and fails so WW2 breaks out as in our history with Adolf and all, he would probably manage the war in a much more competent...

I think he'd be fully prepared for Barbarossa, he might have even gone on the offensive immediately after the German buildup was noticed, unlike Stalin who was dumbfounded.

Don't forget all the rightwingers and conservatives who hated the republic, the jews and all the liberal/center parties.
And then there was the Reichswehr which acted as a state inside a state, the Freikorps, the Stahlhelm etc. who all despised democracy and wanted a military dictatorship.

I'm a student majoring in history and we're in the middle of our finals. Here I am writing a fake-essay to prepare me for the one we have to write in class when I go over Kubitscheck's little shtick in Brazil.

I'm writing the part about him getting pissed at the IMF and, instead of taking their loan, he prints more money.

As soon as I write that down I start thinking...

When has printing more money ever fucking worked? For any nation? Ever?

Anyone know? Genuinely curious.

Hello /his/, /x/ here.

I was looking at very old tarot decks and I noticed something at the Death cards that drew my attention. As you can see here, the death has some sort of headband. Other designs also feature this kind of headband. It reminded me about those headbands that the dead have in anime.

So, my question is: do you know why does the death have a headband? Do you know if there was some medieval custom to put this on the deceased?

I'm not sure what I am.

I used to be agnostic but now that I've given it some thought I don't think that term fits me anymore. I did quit like the idea that we with our current knowledge can't answer whether god exists or not but it feels a bit incomplete now. I was slipping over more to the side that we could never find out if god exists but I believe I've taken a step further.

I've concluded that the question itself is wrong. That the distinction between "God" and "No god" is inherently meaningless.

Does...

But, I also never gave Jesus a chance. Eventually I did. I accept Jesus today.

How come Ethiopia developed so independently when compared to other civillizations? Did you cut off the greeks and south thracians and put them in the place of the britons?

It doesn't do much, since europeans probably came into the continent from the long way around, through modern Ukraine, and not through Anatolia.
>>
You removed the aegean and messed up the shape of Britain, with a bigger cyprus in particular?

Well first of all, Europe wouldn't be as developed as they are now due to the extra problems involved in travelling from Anatolia to Bulgaria. No greeks to be influenced by persians would lead to no alexander the great, as well as no grecoromans in general, meaning Europe would continue being illiterate savages without a bronze age, and thus not in any way an equal to China or the middle east. Perhaps slightly better off than the gulf of guinea was, development wise.

EVERYONE wanted Wallace.
The entire country wanted Wallace.

It was the party bosses who wanted Truman because they were scared of Wallaces Progressive views. Wallace was the main pick and lacked a small number of votes to win and the convention was shut down early the first night by the party bosses to keep him out.

Truman himself didn't think FDR would die.

Sorry, I was unclear. This is the critical issue that gave Wallace the boot. America was at war, and it needed a wartime President, someone who would make the hard choice like that. Wallace either would have tried to sign an armistice with Japan, letting them take another crack at it 20 years later, or he would have let Operation Downfall go through and killed several million men instead of the <200...
