What do you think of this series? It goes from the Big Bang to 2008 in the span of 5 books, of which have ~300 pages each. Of course it's not supposed to be a replacement for textbooks but I'm wondering if it's good for a casual learning of history.

how do we place a value on life?

now maybe it's a basic question, but there seems to be a lot of of divergent views on the matter

is the life of a young person worth as much as the life of an old person?
is the life of a disabled person worth as much as a able person?
is the life of a criminal/wrongdoer worth as much as the life of an artist, worker or leader?
is the life of a fetus worth as much as the life of a newborn?
what about someone who's brain only keeps their body working?
what about a brain that works in a body that doesn't?

It's all whatever we were taught as a child or came to think afterwards, no life has an objective "value".
>>
>>1590393
a lot of people would disagree

many people think that a life has a "soul" based value

many more think a life has a social value

some think life has a potentiate value (eg. it's valuable on the basis that it COULD be valuable)

Most likely they were very similar but there isn't a lot of concrete evidence of the Finns before the Swedes came and destroyed everything they got their hands on.

Based on the Norse sagas there was a lot of marriages between the Finns and the Norsemen and some of them imply that the Norse kings would've been sons of a Finn king but because their historic value is questionable at best it's hard to say if they have any truth in them.

It is my understanding that modern Finns have used very...

Finns and Slavs were technologically more primitive, they inhabited forests and taigas where conventional agriculture doesn't work so they mostly kept animals and cultivated small gardens. They had iron but lacked collectivised industry and distribution so it's use was small-scale, for tools and spears and arrows, not plate armor or swords.

So the Norse? And almost everyone else in Northern Europe?

I don't consider myself an expert but I know a bit.

Slavs practiced slash and burn agriculture which was useful in forested lands, so they definitely had more than just small gardens.

By the 10th century and perhaps the later 9th century the...

Christian State of Syria and the Levant NOW

I posted a thread about this a couple of days ago and didn't get much of a response. Thought I'd try again.

I'm interested in reading some books about modern resistance movements, like for instance the French and Polish resistances in WW2. However, when trying to find books on these subjects I tend to encounter those that try to romanticize things, and focus more on individual, personal stories than operational aspects.

While I understand the human interest aspect is important, and most folk would find that part of it more entertaining, I'm...

Well they did some atrocity... like killing most of Jerusalem inhabitants during the first crusade. While it's still ruthless and might count as an act of war crime by todays standard, most of their rivals or similar armies at the time (Muslims and Mongols) do pretty much the same. It's a different time with the different set of value. To paint them as entirely good or evil won't be accurate.
