4 MB,
When you read a book about a historical topic, how much of the specific detail do you usually retain?

For instance, I am reading a book on the history of Saudi Arabia currently. I find that even an hour after reading I don't remember many of the names except for the major ones. I'll remember the general themes and topics discussed but often not a lot of the specifics unless it was something that had particularly interested me.

Is that normal? Or do I have a bad memory/reading methodology?

Reading more on the subject area will help you retain info, other than that all you can really do is just keep your books around to re-read or quickly reference in the future.

It could also just be the subject area honestly, probably some very unfamiliar and easily remembered names in that bunch.

This

I only just started actually reading up on Roman history and tbqh all the years and names are a jumble for now, but I'm pretty confident that once I've finished this particular book and eventually read the same events as narrated by someone else it will start sinking in

Unless you have like eidetic memory or some shit, I doubt anyone can remember details at first, it's nothing to worry about
>>
>>1560408
I guess it depends on my reasonings for reading too. I'm sort of just reading for pleasure, not for school or whatever so it doesn't matter

I kinda just casually read various things from the uni library, don't really focus on a particular topic

944 KB,
I have recently been playing a LOT of Rome Total War and I have acquired a much greater interest in ancient history than I have had ever before. I did study four years of Latin and the Roman Culture, but admittedly never delved as deeply into the subject as I probably should have.
Now I find myself with an insatiable thirst for knowledge on the ancient world. And NOT JUST ROME. All cultures, factions, tribes, empires, and societies of the ancient world.

Please use this thread a total ancient world dumping ground. I will consume it all.

There are a lot of books that made it through to now that were written directly by Romans. Just google it. I mean if you were serious you could learn Latin, but if not then just read the English translations. Virgil is always good.

>Is it true that the Ottoman Empire, and the Arabic Caliphates, were secular?

No, they were theocracies in which the head of state was also the head of the religion. Literary the antithesis of secularism.
>>
>>1558791
They derived much of their law from their holy books, but the thing is that Europe did the exact same thing at the time, especially before the reformation.

They were definitely more secular than modern day Saudi Arabia, which is basically a wet dream come true for the salafist-wahhabist faggots who literally yearn for the stone age and think they're better for it.

The form of islam that /pol/ gets butthurt about is mostly a meme unique to the past 2 centuries or so, but unfortunately managed to proliferate.

How many outfits, changes of clothes, or accessories would the people of three different social classes have in the 18th century? Presumably every man would have one tricorne hat (or perhaps two) and one good outfit, equivalent to one's suit and tie today, as well as regular clothes. But of course, many things were more expensive back then, and this begs the question how much one could posses, especially since personal and national economics were so vastly different back in the age of enlightenment.

Any clues, ideas, estimates, or facts?

Think of it not as facts and dates to cram into your brain, but as a story in which the facts and dates are details.
Imagine yourself telling someone about, to use your picture as an example, how Constantinople was taken by the Ottomans. You wouldn't just jot off a bullet point list of events and times that they happened, you'd make it flow as a narrative. Imagine the major players not as names to memorize, but people who had their own motives and emotions that lead them to do the things they did.

In short, make it interesting for yourself and the facts...

I try to create a timeline in my head of when certain things happened in what order, but usually not the exact specific date unless its necessary. For example I don't know what day exactly the Defenestration of Prauge happened, but I do know that it happened shortly after Ferdinand became >Holy >Roman >Emperor, and started the 30 years war in 1618. To me its fun seeing how a single person or event can cause a chain reaction that lasts for decades and see what caused what.

>>1557624
Think of how you can remember lines from a poem, a book, a play, a movie. It's sort of like that. Humans are pretty good at memorizing narratives, characters, etc.

Try and pick out a major figure important to the events you're studying, and follow his story through them. Then pick out another, and another.
