There's such a thing as outsider art, but has there been such a thing as outsider historians, linguistics, etc? People with no formal training or institutional exposure who ended up producing revolutionary works in a field?

Oh I know: Jared Diamond is one. Nassim Taleb is another.

I do dislike the general attitude towards outsiders. Diamond was wrong on several points, but some just play the "he is not a anthropologist" card.

Then again, judging by the OP of this thread, you already have an answer in your mind and you just want validation of your worldview.

They weren't happy when they found out that they lost.

In Berlin on Tuesday evening, the 28th, some thousands of people from working-class areas marched into the city centre singing socialist songs and crying out ‘Down with the war!’ and ‘Long live social democracy!’
On the pavements, bystanders showed their disapproval by singing the rousing patriotic songs ‘Wacht am Rhein’ and ‘Heil dir im Siegerkranz’. Half an hour later the police charged and cleared the street, to loud applause from patrons nursing their mugs of hot chocolate on the balconies of Café Bauer and Café Kranzler.

Denmark: An Arch Enemy

Danmark and Sweden has been figthing since 1000s (earliest findings). And we didn't stop figthing untill Napoleon was dead (after the battle at Leipzig). Where I live now use to be a Battlefield for 500 years. Endless war and civil unrest. And the sole enemy was the dane. Some of the greatest tragedies was made by the dane's such as Stockholm blodbad where they killed of the entire royal family and loads of bishops. And the battle of Visby where they ransacked the medival city of Visby.

So my question is, How come we are so close today?

82 KB,
Just started drinking posca after reading about Roman food habits and after watching Townsend's vid on switchel. It's just wine/cider vinegar, water and honey/sugar, and it's incredibly refreshing. Taste is like lemonade with an obvious vinegar zip and a very slight effervescence I haven't been able to pin down (might be because of my fridge's water dispenser). Drunk by laborers and soldiers cause it's got electrolytes, and that's what they crave.

Sometimes, I'll be driving my car, and I'll wonder to myself, how am I even doing this?

As a matter of fact, what am 'I'? I move my arms to turn the wheel to direct the car how it should go. I press my foot down on the gas with the right pressure to make the car go as fast or slow as it needs to go. This all occurs in real time. My body is doing these things, and it almost seems out of my control. Do I really have any control at all? Do I have any free will at all? It is out of your control. The idea there's some "you" actively conducting all the little details your body does is a convenient illusion that makes communication less complicated. It's not limited to your physical actions either. Most people believe they somehow will their own thoughts into existence too, which on closer inspection can't possibly be the case since it would lead to...

Looking at those early days of the Christian Church, all of the members were saints. They were all equal unto each other—all of them. It must have been glorious to be a part of that, and break away from the old to something that gave a promise, a promise of a better life. You see, in those days life was terrible. It was uncertain at best. No one knew when they woke up in the morning if they would live to see the nightfall. And it was that uncertain every single day. And all of a sudden, there was a promise. There was a promise.

Nothing could stop it; no matter how many Christians the emperor crucified, no matter how many Christians were thrown to the animals in the Roman circus, one hundred fold sprang up to take their place.

This movement encircled the mountains and crossed the oceans. It made kings tremble and tyrants fearful. It was said of those early Christians that they had turned the world literally upside down! -- so powerful was their message and spirit.

Now, I'm talking about the true Christian teachings of Jesus Christ, in the way that it was followed in the early days...

Attempts to merge paganism into Christianity were being made even in the days when our New Testament was being written, folks, for Paul mentioned that the "mystery of iniquity" was already at work, and he warned that there would come a "falling away" and some would "depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils" -- the counterfeit doctrines of the pagans ([2nd Thessalonians, Chapter 2, verses 3 through 7; 1st Timothy, Chapter 4, verse 2]). He had to, for Rome would have fallen just as sure, as a tree in the forest falls to the axe, if he had not made that move.

In those early days of the real Church -- the real Church, Christ's Church, who practiced exactly what he taught them -- great, great changes began to take place that have affected us right up to this very day. What a shock it must have been when Constantine professed a conversion to Christianity after stating that he'd seen the vision of a cross in the sky.
