It won by becoming the iron fist hidden beneath the velvet glove of Confucianism, Buddhism, Communism, or whatever was the nominal ideology of the time.

It's pretty much the basis of every modern nation state. You think ancient Chinese bureaucracy was anywhere near as expansive as a modern one?
>>

Elements of Legalism crept its way into Confucianism when the latter was the dominant Philosophy under the Han Dynasty (which set the pattern for Chinese Empire). However the Han did build on the shit Qin Shi Huang founded.

yeah it's pretty well-established by anyone with an education on the subject that post-modernism was just a late 20th-century movement, but many of the conditions to which it belonged still persist and as such the movement continues to influence the contemporary, as much as new conditions and older movements.

sometimes people come onto 4chan and elucidate what post-modernism means but largely no one listens. it's embarrassing for a history board to have as much insight into post-modernism as /tv/

Usual military procedure is to put 2 bullets in the chest, and then 1 in the head when the enemy is downed.

In your example, the number 1 priority for the soldiers of group A would be to put 1 or 2 extra bullets in the fallen fighters of group B when they enter the position.

It bears a remarkable similarity to the formation of common law. And given the relatively late date of composition, I find it interesting that you apparently had Jewish religious courts long after the collapse of Jewish sovereignty.

So WWI started because Serbia refused to give Gavrilo Princip to Austrian authorities, and instead wanted to try him themselves. Is it just me or is this the dumbest casus belli ever? How did France and England, and even America get involved in that? Did at no point German, French and British soldiers think to themselves during their 4 years in the trenches , "So what are we fighting for again? Oh, to ensure that this Serbian guy is tried in his own country". What a waste. Some peasant's life for the lives of millions. How did they justify this absurdity?

My argument is that we are naive about what actually works and that as humans we have a tendency to share what we like.

Natural selection is better as any artificial selection since the one is bricolage and the other is planned. You cannot foresee what traits are necessary in the future.

I think eugenics could undo genetic diversity, diversity which is a kind of hedging.

Instead of overcoming the suffering in the world, they petrify it, force men to venerate a world that tortures the just through the formulation and worship of universal truths. Why did the prehistoric peoples never make realistic depictions of people?
In caves throughout Europe, highly realistic depictions of animals are found by the thousands, even to the point where we can, today, 30,000 years later, determine the species of the animal depicted. But whenever humans were depicted in cave art (and this is a very rare occurance to begin with) they are merely drawn as crude, simple, stick figures. How come? Why didn't pre-historic man engrave or paint realistic depictions of the people of their tribe?

ITT: Things you wish were better documented/events you wish we knew more about

I wish there were more details about the Battle of Tara in Ireland.
Generally accepted knowledge is that Máel Sechnaill Mac Domnaill the North king of Ireland, fought Óláf Sigtryggsson and his norse army from Dublin.
Other widely accepted notes are that the irish were hugely outnumbered, but we know that the Norse army was utterly decimated. This laid the path for Brian Boru to then "succeed" at Clontarf.

I would love to know more about what happened, or the actual numbers.

Two types of evil

Necessary evil
And the evil that is harder to explain
Conditional evil

Necessary evil
Is a wolf evil for killing a creature? Maybe so, but the evil is necessary for the creature to fulfill its instinct to survive.

Conditional evil
This is more like sin. Where nothing good is intended by an act or thought that only brings more bad into the world. There is no necessity for this evil. It is simply conditional on the evil...

Reading about russian history, it's weird to see how autocracy is deeply rooted in this country. Russia was in terrible state after the Rurik dynasty died, and only got better under the total control of the emperor, the contrast with Poland who weaker and weaker is quite striking. The changes always come from the government, but even the emperors willing to reform Russia (like Peter the great or Alexander I never considered to limite their own power, safe for Alexander II. Even after the revolution of 1917, Russia quickly discarded marxism and went with total autocracy...

The distance between their cities and cultural centers was far too great to allow it's people and rulers great to form a cohesive and fully unified nation for many centuries.

They're also very domineering people who prefer a stern but stable government to a decentralized democratic haven.
>>
>>1530713
Cause Russia is massive and sparsely populated. you kind of need an autocrat to make it all work. History has also shown that autocracy has led to Russian stability and (relative) success, so people are more willing to accept it. For instance, look at the socio-economic disaster that was the Yeltsin era compared to Putin (in particular his first decade)

Fascism in Italy and Nazism in Germany were fed by two factors:

1. Being butthurt about the unfavorable outcome of the Great War (in case of Italy - butthurt about the small amount of spoils).
2. Post-war an Great Recession economic hardships.

In case of UK, only the second factor is in the picture, and even then the population was hit much softer than those living on the Continent.
