That's nothing.

Here's a real weirdo sect.

>On occasion, members of this group assaulted Roman legionaries or armed travelers with simple wooden clubs to provoke them into attacking and martyring them. Others interrupted courts of law and verbally provoked the judge so that he would order their immediate execution (a normal punishment at the time for contempt of court).[6] The sect survived until the fifth century in Africa.

Is there a way a country could invade, conquer and annex another country without suffering backlash of nationalistic rebellion and rebels? Like.. some form of system to quench and satisfy nationalistic independance?

Crude Example: US invades mexico and mexico leads a nationalistic revolution for independance.

No, nations are pretty sacrosanct at this point.

Unless it's lile Egypt annexing Libya, or China annexing another Chinese country, or Somalia and Djibouti.
>>
>>2002052
Depends, how harsh do you want to be? Imperialism does work, as long as your clever and ruthless enough.

A time tested method would be to find some local enforcer you can make nominally in charge, make them rich and they let you do whatever the hell you want with their nations resources.

That scene was not accurate at all and frankly completely ridiculous. For one thing, the bodies couldn't possibly be stacked that high in that small of a space, they'd fall down. Things like that just didn't happen, especially in medieval combat.

Also, it was extremely rare for an army to envelop an opposing army and allow them no means of retreat. They cite Cannae but Cannae didn't work like that, the encirclement was closed by cavalry - cavalry which apparently disappeared after the initial...

How do you call the study of how language/words changed over time, like, there was a word with the meaning X, and after some time a new word replaced this word, still meaning X? Or how the word with the meaning X changed it's meaning to Y?
13 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.

>>2001232

Philology and Historical linguistics are the study of language change and the history of languages. The latter is more old fashioned and closely related to literary criticism. Involves the very close reading of few ancient texts; like one guy who study the changes of a few words found in Anglo-Saxon texts. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were philologists. Historical linguistics is a more modern and (hopefully) more scientific approach the the linguistic past that evolved out of philology.

mathematics only became as symbolic as it is now just recently within the last couple of hundred years due to developments in pure mathematics like set theory, metamathematics, etc. due to frege, russell, and even some mathematicians/logicians before them. for example f(x)=y notation is attributed to euler, as are a bunch of other notations. afaik, before the developments, mathematicians used to write stuff down like "the product of three and the sum of seven and x is equal to 290"

The Fall of the Roman Empire: a New History of Rome and the Barbarians and Empires and Barbarians: Migration, Development and the Birth of Europe by Peter Heather are quite good. The first one focuses on Roman history and reasons it's eventual failure in the west and the second - on the history of "barbarian" Europe from 1st century AD till Slavic expansion in 7th century, with very interesting analysis of migrational processes. The Restoration of Rome : Barbarian Popes and Imperial Pretenders is a nice follow up about Justinian, Charlemagne and the Papacy.

"The empire of Darius lasted hardly a century. The moral as well as the physical backbone of Persia was broken by Marathon, Salamis and Plataea; the emperors exchanged Mars for Venus, and the nation descended into corruption and apathy.

The decline of Persia anticipated almost in detail the decline of Rome: immorality and degeneration among the people accompanied violence and negligence on the throne. The Persians, like the Medes before them, passed from stoicism to epicureanism in a few generations. Eating became...

Because rich people today are mostly rich from capitalism and not from blood. The former don't get their children into being scholars. They also don't have that many children to begin with, so that they can afford to have one of them go into academia. Now you have historians from filth background, that don't have an aristocratic culture to imitate.

Can't it be said that most egalitarian principles that many people(including most atheists) hold dear today mostly originated or developed from Christian/Jewish ideologies? The concept that all humans are equally valuable because they were created in God's image paved the way for many societal revolutions and inveitibling the idea of basic "human rights." It was completely on thought of in many pagan societies that all people, whether or not they were men, women, poor, or rich deserved to be treated with dignity/respect never even crossed their minds.
