Just how brutal and violent was the Spanish conquest of Latin America, and how many of the stories are British / French propaganda?
For example, did the Spanish really crucify old and weak natives en masse after enslaving able bodied men and raping young women?
>enslaving able bodied men and raping young women?
most likely true
>crucify old and weak natives en masse
why would they bother. Maybe they executed the highest nobles and clergy in an exemplary way
It was pretty fucked up and there are reports of systematic rape of nobles and priestess.
>implying "MUUH AZTECS. FUCK THE SPANIARDS" isn't all about the Black Legend spread amongst the Anglo scholars
The societal system in Spain's colonies was far more advanced than that and established the way for admixture between Spaniards and natives, something that was frowned upon by other colonial powers. Also, their treatment of indegenous populations were miles ahead from other colonial powers (namely UK and Portugal) in the Americas.
They were pretty violent while conquering but after it was over treated the natives far better than, for example, UK and France.
And no, you're example is retarded. They raped and pillaged like every other european nation used to do and that is all.
Holy shit, again no.
The Brits actually trying to preserve the lands of the red niggers is one of the major causes of the American Revolution. The British never expected that it and other shit like taxes would make us chimp out.
The Spanish imported a fuck-ton of less than desirables, brutal get-rich-quick types and poorfags to south and central america. The mass death of natives was largely a side effect of hardier diseases being introduced, but a larger number survived and mixed with the immigrating invaders than in north america.
That being said, all empires are cruel (that doesn't excuse it) but comparatively Spain was mid-tier at worst.
I think you have that backwards lad. Pushing them out assuredly, but the absolutely massive investment put in to integrating them (even under Jackson) illustrates pretty clearly that extermination wasn't on the table.
>crucify old and weak natives en masse
>enslaving able bodied men and raping young women
Not true either
The Natives were considered human and were paid a salary, that was used to pay taxes and their own sustain.
Problem was the Spanish overworked the natives, which were a physically weak race.
Blacks solved that problem
>did the Spanish really crucify old and weak natives en masse after enslaving able bodied men
Natives were protected by law against slavery and inquisition trial. Gaining souls for christianity was more a profit than killing them all
>raping young women
>implying native women don't love white cock
>which were a physically weak race.
yeah no. Europeans in those conditions would die just the fucking same, because it was slavery in all but name.
Their salary was a joke, the work was extremely hazardous and hard and they were treated like slaves.
the jesuits did their part too
most codices and everything we know about native languages we owe it to them
the natives might have been considered human and "having a soul" (once again, thank catholic missionaries) but they were also heavily scammed, realized they were being had, and revolted like any other normal person would do. that's when the mass killings happened
Generally, it was moderate. There were some excesses that were ridicolously exaggerated by Protestant propaganda to generalize the Spanish conquest in the Black Legend.
Protestants were the real brutal ones.
The indigenous population of the US was far smaller than that of Mexico and South America, and the British and our government's misdeeds pale in comparison to those committed by Spain.
Before 1492 Tenochtitlan was one of the largest cities in the world and the regions inhabited by the Maya were some of the most densely populated in history. The cities in the Andes also had very high populations. By contrast there was not a single city in what would become the United States numbering over 15,000 people when the English arrived at Jamestown in 1607. The indigenous population of the United States could not recover as quickly from introduced diseases the way the more urban indigenous populations in Mexico, Central, and South America could because they were so spread out and because there were less of them to begin with. The Spaniards toppled massive sophisticated governments and enslaved every Indian they could get their hands on and forced the rest into a caste system where they could never be equal to whites.
Also nothing in US history, not even plantation slavery, can compare to the atrocities committed in the silver mines of Spanish America.
Look at what the average citizen of a country settled by the spanish looks like now compared to the average north american.
The Spanish were rough but their colonization integrated the natives. Rather than one group overpowering the other and becoming dominant a third was firmed. Even if in the British settled areas they had nice intentions the US became massive and British-cultured while the natives now live on shitty little reservations.
many US tribes simply became white through intermarriage [in order to avoid incest among their small populations] and lost their identities. Like I said >>83453 there were far fewer natives overall in what is now the US than there were in Mexico and South America. The Cherokee today look white and live like just about anyone else in the area.
This reminds me of an interesting story my dad told me. When the Spanish went to look for El Dorado they discovered it was actually a lake and not a city. The indigenous people would throw gold and other valuables into the lake as tribute. The Spanish then forced the indigenous people to retrieve the gold where many of them drowned in the process.
Coming from the same people who put their own "to the test" I could only imagine what they thought what thought of the godless heathens in the new world.
The Black Legend is just that, legend.
Most of us come from countries affected by that propaganda campaign either directly (Anglo countries) or indirectly. The fact that Spaniards today have less national pride [outside of football] than the French or shitty balkan countries is testament to that fact.
Spain's empire is one of the most impressive in all of human history.
