it's really not the precursor to pixel art, he doesn't even use a regular grid most of the time. it's just geometric. and pixel art has nothing to do with "getting" mondrian

Yes. You can be sued for using someone else's likeness. I remember that lesbian x-men girl said that naughty dog was ripping off her likeness in the last of us and they remodeled their girl because of that.
>>
>>2778333
That's a large scale production though. A couple of pictures commissioned for personal use isn't the same as making a product to be packaged and resold over and over. Technically they could sue if they saw the image and found out it was paid for, but I really doubt most recognizeable celebrities would care enough to file suit for the price of a single commission even if it was a couple thousand dollars. And with it being a single commission most likely it'll never hit their radar anyway. The type of...

I wanna start doing some oil painting and am after some advice.

Is there anything I need to know about buying a canvas? I assume the store bought ones don't require any kind of additional preparation before painting on them? I've heard some canvases can cause dried paint to crack due to movement.

And what about after a painting is finished, are you supposed to coat it with varnish, or something else to protect the paint after it dries?

Gesso is something you prime your canvas with before painting. Some canvasses are already primed.

You don't have to use it, but the surface won't be smooth and the paint might not hold so well. But I don't have too much knowledge about this.
>>
>>2777871
If this is your first time trying oil paints, then my first piece of advice is to just go out and buy a beginner set of oil paints, brushes, and canvas/canvas board. Anything else will send you down a long dark rabbit hole of technical aspects that wont matter until your style and comfort with oil paint is solid.

To answer your question, Gesso is used to create a barrier between the canvas and the paint, as well as a medium for the oil to bond to. Without gesso, the oil would slowly deteriorate the cloth behind...

Since you are just getting into oils, you really wont have to worry about half of the things I went over. The best thing you could do at this point is to find artists that you enjoy and try and emulate their style. How do they use color? How much detail is necessary? Try and find out what they did to learn to use oil. STUDY THE BRUSH STROKES. Seriously. Go to a museum and get so close to the art that security gets pissed. My recommendation, if you aren't...

Go to a Design school, not an Art school.

Design schools test your hustle. Since the workload and learning curve is very steep. It tests your time management skills. You'll create actual meaningful relationships with instructors and fellow peers. It's a chance for you to explore and experiment while getting critiques by professionals.

If you're worried about jobs, learn anything Graphic Design, Product Design, 3D modeling, Photo retouching, UX Design. Those are actual jobs that are quite stable yet kind of boring.

The only thing I will say is to get ALL liberal arts done BEFORE entering a Design school. That way you can focus on art as much as possible. Just make sure the credits transfer.
>>
>Redpill me on art schools.

You're going $100,000+ into debt for a degree in a field where a degree doesn't matter and where all the knowledge you need can be obtained for free so you can compete with self-taught pros who are better than you will probably ever be. And the pay in this field is usually low to middling unless you're really good or really lucky, btw.

To start but not limit the thread: After years of charcoal drawing and dabbling in watercolor, acrylic, ink, etc. I've decided to dive into oils. I'm pretty confident in drawing, so I'm mostly concerned with handling. For those of you who have experience with oil:

What books/videos would you recommend? I've already read The Complete Oil Painter by Gorst.

There's a book by Harold Speed about oil painting that a lot of my colleagues talk about.

I've tried the art forums, discord groups, etc. and was kind of disappointed by the vibe. I wonder if it's a little like the bystander effect, where having so many people posting dissuades people from really pushing one another. It's usually a few people really working and a bunch of people mostly just shooting the shit.

I want to find one art bud around my skill level who's down to communicate regularly (perhaps daily) and wants to compete with the goal of the two of us pushing one another to grow like a couple flowers or some shit. I'm in Seattle...

I'm going to take a trip soon. I'll be on the plane for 10+ hours each way. I want to get better at drawing the human form, and to have a better understanding of how to convey form better through my drawings.

How should I use my time on the plane to do this? Is there some sort of hyperbolic time chamber-like technique for me to use to do this?

I have an office printer that I can use to shoot off an art book if necessary.

Go to school. If you aren't working, you'll still have time to get better at art if you're not a lazy fuck. And if you're 25 and unemployed, you get the full force of that delicious pell grant. Throw in some scholarships and your loans are less than a honda civic. Just make sure your healthcare won't get dropped for not making enough to get discounted healthcare and not being black so you can't get on medicaid.
>>
>>2776744
Dont listen to >>2776758 , you don't have to use all 40k, but at least try it for a year, you're in a pretty unique spot, take your chance.
>>
>>2776744
At that rate, your savings will last you 4 years. If you can actually grind for at least 8 hours everyday, and practice the right now (not just mindlessly doing shit that isn't advancing you any particular direction) then sure.

So I wanted to come up with my own comic style for becoming a comic book artist at least for my passion. I wanted to make a comic of PowerGirl. I know it's not finished but I have come to the end of my rope in terms of how I can improve to make this better.

Best way to find a "style" is learn how to draw a figure and recognize shapes within them a little better. Once you can eyeball something and break it down into simplified shapes you're on your way to gold. Keep a log of artist you already admire and play Frankenstein's monster, experiment alongside trying to improve your skill set.

that video or the book by that guy. Invest in a cast and an easel

Pic something you think is interesting with good areas of smooth and detail. I have the facial features set, it's really nice. if you're on the cheap, just buy the eye or the mouth.

this method will teach you about values real good.

color & light by James something.
what will really get you better at values is doing many studies of casts like you have right there in OP pic.

How do I study? Do I put a picture in grayscale and then try to copy it?
