Is shape language something you accrue over time, or are there specific studies you can do to help speed up your knowledge of shapes?

>>2655896
both
>>
>>2655896

Collect your reference in a smart way and do multiple studies of one subject. Break down the shapes (simplify) and try to workout the underlying proportions that makes it look a certain way. Tracing can be very helpful for this if supplemented with observation drawing.

For instance; I've studied the way a particular artist draws faces by making a sheet with just copy pasted heads from his works. I copy the heads from observation first as close as possible to the original. Then I do a shape analysis similar to the Bargue layin method. A blocky simplified version that I fill a page with. I gradually start looking less and less at the reference and eventually attempt to draw completely from memory. When I feel reasonably comfortable with drawing the layin from imagination I start adding the final shapes again in a process of looking at the reference first and the gradually moving away from it. I force myself to deconstruct every shape mentally before looking at the ref for answers and compare it with my attempt. Every study goes through multiple iterations this way and is way superior to just doing a single copy in my experience.

hey /ic/ i picked up this painting at an estate sale for like $10 and guy who died was a big hoarder and had loads of random stuff. I looked closely at the label on the back and it says it was originally priced at $100, so i wanna see if its worth anything or if theres any information about the artist. i cant make out the name of the artist, but all i know is that its called "Love Yourself" and its from 1997, i'll post more photos of the signature on the back and closeups of thelabel in the thread

Yes, uni.

Like 2-3 hours. 5 at best. Although this is if I want to sleep, since I don't want to fall asleep in class.

Not necessarily. Many people do it since they know that they'll need money, but some people can't handle the stress. It's different for everyone.

I used to do full time until, and it was awful, most I could get was 2 hours on average. If you want to become a professional I think you need to dedicate yourself to it because no matter how hard you try I think having that safety net to fall back on will always slow you down. Save money, live like a monk & get out of there if you want to be a professional, I know for me ever since then my mental health has been better, I've been taking art more seriously & been getting more commissions than I did before...

how do you even make an account in weibo?
I tried connecting fb account but all it does is load a bit but i never got logged in

I feel that I rely too much on reference photos and real life models for my art work. Most of my friends tell me that working with reference photos are important, and I believe that they are correct, but I can't seem to draw anything without looking up a reference picture to draw from. All of my friends seem to be able to draw anything they want without using references photos. Should I stray away from relying so heavily on these pictures, or is everything okay?

Sounds like you're copying reference instead of learning from it. Copying something without attempting to understand it is where the problem most likely stems from. Here's a math comparison.

you see 2+2 =4. So you write that down over and over. You don't know WHY 2+2=4 so when you have to do 3+2, you're stumped. But if you know that + means that two things are put together to create a greater sum, and then three things and two things would make five together, then when you come up again...

But not the same way. I was able to pic up a pencil and from memory just draw. I'm not bashing you techniques at drawing, but I have never understood why people need to use underlining to draw simple stuff. I was always able to draw what I see just how I see it, shading aswell. "Don't look for big things, just do small things with great love."

Better known as Mother Teresa, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was an Albanian born Indian Roman Catholic Nun, who from the age of 12 after being impressed by a group of missionaries, committed her life to serving Christ. She wrote to her Sisters; ""To the good God nothing is little because He is so great and we so small—that is why He stoops down and takes the trouble to make those little things for us—to give us a chance to prove our love for Him. He makes them; they are very great....
