290 KB,
What do you think of this oil painting I'm working on?

I understand that the overall brown color is a little unappealing, but I'm having trouble keeping the colors from mixing on the canvas and I don't know a lot about choosing harmonious colors.
If you have any advice regarding oil painting or color theory, I'd love to hear it!

Thanks

Almost everything is severely fucked here. You need to draw from life / pictures for about a year, studying the anatomy and proportions. It's clear you're a beginner and know next to nothing.

Do not be dismayed; it can all be learned with a few hundred hours behind you.

I just realized that this could have come off as rude; I admit I can be a little crude around the corners. The reason you brought it here is to have certain things pointed out, but the truth is that you know very little - but that's to be expected of any one who has never actually studied. And knowing how to study instead of copying is important.

As you study, do not just copy. Notice how the limbs move. Study center lines and where they go to. Break your anatomy down into 3 dimensional objects nad make...

You have to draw the skin and the pores
With the charcoal
>>

My thinking was that lines in the skin, the left half of the face, the jacket, and some hairs would be drawn with the charcoal.

It seems like using charcoal on his face would make it too dark.

My range is white charcoal, 4H, 3H, 2H, HB, 2B, 3B, 4B, 6B, 8B, black charcoal

Does anyone here draw from observation using pen? I've been told my pen technique is strong, but I haven't had much success trying to use it to draw from life. I can with pencil though, usually in a gestural/expressive style. my pen technique is pretty much the opposite, very slow and careful.

Why not post examples of your work instead of making us guess what it looks like, like assholes.

Yes I'm worked with pen. You can do construction with a ballpoint easily, and once I'm at the fixative stage it's not like I break out the eraser that late in the game anyway.

I am trying to get better in portraits and understand human anatomy, so I have been wondering. I saw this photo of Timothy Dalton, and this skin fold on the bottom of his cheek caught my attention. What is it called, if anything? What causes it, anatomy-wise: is it muscles, bones, or something else? I have a hard time imagining it in my head.

Bruce Lee wrote these lines for the short-lived American crime drama series "Longstreet", which aired in 1971 & 1972. The show is about a blind man named Mike Longstreet (played by James Franciscus) who fights crime despite being blind. Lee plays antiques dealder Li Tsung, who instructs Longstreet...

How many of you guys have joined an indie game dev project before and what's your experience over there? We've heard a lot about making it big studio for AAA project but rarely are indie works discussed, which seems odd considering the fact that demand for artist for indie project looks pretty high, or at least higher than big studio work.

A couple.

All crashed and burned. Generally anything that you'd actually get headhunted for and isn't just a couple of programmers and maybe a reliable artist working together towards a common goal, is going to fail.

Waste of fucking time.

One stands out in particular - dude hired like 6 artists for his MOBA dream team and had yet to hire a single programmer or 3D artist. For his 3D game. Just six random illustrators with no art director to do concept work.

I worked as an animator for an indie game project, for free, and I'll never do something like that again. For one, 9/10 indie game projects fall through (probably more than that) and it's the artist that's stuck doing the most work by far. I only hopped aboard because it was my favorite cousin that asked and I was idealistic, myself. I didn't realize how stupid the whole thing was until the weeks and months went on, the goalposts kept getting set higher and higher, and the other "team members" were doing less and less (especially the "idea...

The content is pretty good. It's just the oldschool way of school teaching where you repeat something 8 million times so even the faggots in the last row of seats who are too cool for school will get it.

If you teach people that are willing to learn you should have a different teaching approach though. I think Erik Olson's video are great reference material to have. I will stop going trough the course but I will reorganize the videos so I can find easily the right video if I encounter a perspective problem.

Is it true that the lack of skill in drawing is because people dont know fundamentals from books? My whole life Ive been just drawing, trying to capture values and shapes and whatever and from what I have gathered - it all doesnt matter if you dont know what are you doing.

Basically if you dont read books, you will never get past basic shit, because even with drawing 10 hours or whatever per day - you wont still get it.

I wasted my life just on drawing. Its a meme. You have to read books, understand rules THEN draw. You dont get better without fucking books.

It's not about reading books. It's about how much time you put it in. People just don't spend a ton of time. You have to get passed the barrier to entry which is about a few hundred of hours. After that, you'll be praised as "gifted". Which you do, you would have been good off enough to improve anyways. Some people just don't have the patience for art really. Patience is key.
>>
>>2757177
Well every of my drawing was crooked as fuck etc. until i started to measure it all with keys to drawing technique. Its now better and I wouldnt get better if not for that book (or that particular technique anyway)

I imagine that everything is going to be shit until I get the right technique from a book. I dont know, I just havent improved on my own.
>>
>>2757175
It's possible to learn to draw without reading anything but you'd basically be reinventing the wheel. There's a reason why throughout art history it didn't start out looking like Renaissance art. Reading how other people have solved certain issues or broken down things to be able to wrap your head around them saves time.

It sounds like maybe you were grinding studies rather than painting for fun. Are you creating things and exploring your creativity and making interesting stuff? Or are you just copying photos all day to try to learn?

There's a few things you can try.

1) Take a break from art for a bit, maybe a couple weeks or even longer like a few months.

2) Try to remember what got you into art in the first place. It wasn't just the technique, it was what people were creating--so who inspired you? what...

This is problematic. You were inspired by success stories, hard-working illustrators, etc. You wanted to master it. For some reason now you are already satisfied with what you have.

You lost your curiosity and then you lost your passion. It didn't happen...
