what are some of the sites or resources you guy's use to improve your art in general? or some kind of course to give you a direction on what to practice? alongside the art books of course.

92 KB,
I'm finally giving up on my dream of becoming an illustrator.
I don't care enough anymore, and my job is too brutal to sink more than an hour a day into drawing.

I've decided to simply become a passing hobbyist. I don't want to see it turn into a job, but I don't believe in never progressing at all/getting worse.

I've got too many responsibilities to chase my dream. I didn't even look for it. It all came crashing down on my head regardless as to my own life decisions.

Is anyone else in the same boat?

Good for you anon. You don't need to be an "illustrator" to illustrate. Just draw when you can and always try to get better.

But no I'm not in the same boat soo yeah.

I wish I was a NEET again. I was one for 2 months during a short period of unemployment.

I was hitting 7 hour days of drawing everyday. It's quite likely I'll never get back to that zone ever again. I'm 20, and now my family has come to depend on me financially.

I went from being a horrible artist to a border-line mediocre one in that time frame.

I currently have plenty of free-time, but I feel like I'm on a sinking ship regardless. Will likely be in your position soon but I'm holding on.

What do you exactly call this type of design and where can I get more of it? And I don't mean just architecture/interior design, I mean everything from cars to electronics to drawers. It's like Blade Runner cyberpunk but without the neon and the grime. Usually everything is very blocky. It's futuristic yet retro at the same time.

Please dump references. It's really hard to explain because I'm such a newbie when it comes to design.

>It's futuristic yet retro at the same time.

That's literally what it's called. Retro futurism.
It's mostly from the 70's and 80's so look for sci fi movies from that era.

I am sure you're familiar with Syd Mead as he made concept art for Blade Runner. His work has a lot of that blocky aesthetic you're asking for.

What are your opinions on practicing on paper if you draw exclusively on digital for practicability and convenience (like being able to do so at work)?
Is it a wasted effort? Can your mind even transfer what you learned on paper to digital if you don't have something like a cintiq?

>what a dumb question the answer is obvious
No it's not. I've seen many contradictory arguments in favor of both sides from many experienced artists, as well as some middle grounds.

i used to think that it didn't matter, because improvement happens with your brain not the materials you use. until i realized that I'm quite shit at drawing traditionally, while being very good at digital painting. I had amatuer issues like I couldn't scale things the right size and end up making things too big or too small, as well as tunnel vision where i'd start off big and end up tiny and disproportionate. drawing digitally is very convenient because you can resize things, erase easier, go back, flip the image etc. there are so many shortcuts that you...

>No it's not.
yeah it is. it's all muscle memory. if you sit there and grind perfect circles on paper it's the same motion in digital unless you're a pleb who sits there ctrl+z a million times for every stroke.
>>
>>2776879
My biggest problem with digital is that you can't trust it. I've had it from both sides:
I look at a very good drawing in my hand, then when I digitize it, I realize it looks like utter crap or
I print a digital drawing of mine and suddenly it looks 50% better.

I don't know why this happens, or if it's just me.

>>2776882
Not the same movements. If you have a small tablet like most people, your movements are way less wide than on paper, not to mention you're looking forward to the screen while drawing on your right when digital, a completely different position from when drawing traditional.

I see where you're coming from, but that's a very weak and thoughtless argument.

The image is an installation of bird watercolor paintings arranged in a family portrait setting. Constructive criticism? I'd be happy to offer my critique to others work as well, thanks
7 replies and 4 images submitted. Click here to view.

I feel like I'd like this better in person, but photographed it's boring. If it's supposed to be arranged in a family portrait setting, I'd ditch the chair or get a comfier looking one. The current one looks out of place. Or install something junk to go with the portraits on the end table, like a candle or something. If you're feeling cheeky, some bird-related shit (a spilled bag of feed, bird toys, whatever).

Otherwise, from far away, the birds look nice, but there's not a lot of contrast in a lot of them from far away (and maybe even close up). The colors look kind of muddy too.

It's a charming idea overall, but kind of boring. Sure people who see it in person would be endeared though (the longer I look the more charmed I am honestly).

I really appreciate the feedback. Anyone else? The paintings are not quite as bright in person as this image but a little brighter than the image. But because they are on paper I put them under glass which creates this sort of barrier and dulls the image due to the glare (even with non-glare glass) the best thing I've tried for the glare is plexiglass, but that gets rather expensive (i dunno, maybe I'll do it because the dullness bothers me too)

since it's only starting, you should take a break for a few days. I started feeling symptoms of tendonitis a while back, didn't draw for 4 days, and it went away. I downloaded this thing called Time Out, which reminds me to stop what i'm doing every 15 minutes for 30 seconds, and to take a 30 minute break every 1 hour.

Cock up splints at night while asleep. Get the metal ones, they last longer.
Wrist stretches every hour or so while drawing. Every 2 to 3 when not drawing.

Start doing wrist curls and pronations with light dumbbells 3lb max.

Stop drawing for a few days to help encourage healing.

Hello friends.

I want to start drawing. I want to do this on a computer. I barley even remotely know where the start, but I do know that I want to use a trackpad.

I'm an absolute beginner in terms of ability and plan to do simple art, probably no better than shit like what TG Weaver does, and I'm nowhere even near that sort of level. I can barley draw at all. This is for fun, not to get good.

What's a good trackpad I can buy? Something cheap but that won't infuriate me. Hopefully something with options and space to try shit.
