165 KB,
I don't know what to draw.

Let me make this clear. I'm aiming to become a character designer/concept artist preferably in the entertainment design field. I have no clue what to draw right now in order to build up to that. When I say that, I don't mean value studies and anatomy, or technical stuff I can learn on a dime. I mean I have no whim or drive for creating things my way. Does anyone understand? I feel like I can draw to an extent, but I feel directionless when drawing anything originally. I usually draw when people give me a theme or topic. I can...

Has this exact thread happened before? Straight down to the picture.

Go through blogs for random material and save up reference folders. Military, fashion (high, street, nil), tourism, animal kingdom, space, geological, archaeological, religious, whatever. Draw from reference. You'll find stuff you really like sooner or later.

I never knew I'd like coconut crabs and bishop outfits so much until I spent a day drawing them. That kinda stuff, increase your visual library like crazy and you'll...

Da Vinci - Annunciation.jpg
231 KB,
Post your favorite compositions in paintings and drawings, maybe explain why.

The Annunciation was a combination of Da Vinci's work (the angel and parts of the background) and his master Verrocchio's work. Verrocchio painted in heavy strokes with lead based paint; Da Vinci painted with lighter strokes using paint that did not contain lead. Consequentially, when the painting is x-rayed Da Vinci's angel disappears. The coincidence of the building edge and tree nicely points to the hand of Mary and the altar. The background is constructed with amazing subtle...

For what application? In which medium? If you want to write graffiti that doesn't look horseshit, that's years upon years in itself. Posters and things are just little drawings inside of drawings and you'll either need to bite a style or be able to design a poster already. Walls are hard, urban environments especially because they're years of shit built up over time. Start like any other drawing and go from low detail to high and you've got a better chance of slogging through all the fine details...

The last time I made this thread, people were just dissing the template and no one contributed anything.
>>
>>2733396
Usually I diss the entire idea of painting textured cylinders like this. It's not a good way to learn materials in my opinion, and I also believe most of /ic/ is not at a level that they should be bothering with this type of exercise.
>>
>>2733398
What is a good way to learn materials in your opinion? No one took on the circle/ball template either. Besides, you wouldn't have to restrict yourself to those lines, just think of them like placeholders if you will.
And you can always try and then take a step back if you see the exercise is too hard for you. Who knows, might be fun.

pic probably unrelated

Does anyone have any suggestions on crosshatching with pens? I don't want something as simple as just showing me diff patterns, but not so complex that its like heres an example of a perfectly rendered human. I'd just like to be able to shade primitives with pens right now.

Is Michael Hampton tier muscular simplification alright for an artist to do, or is it simply damaging over a long period of time?

As in deleting the drawing of the insertion of the adductor, pectinus, etc, and simply clumping all of the muscles together and making it "one" muscle.
16 replies and 4 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
Superficially, yes. Especially in the learning process if you're a beginner - I see way too many (including some on this board) that obsess over understanding each and every little muscle and how it works when they can't draw a box in perspective well.
>>
>>2736820
It depends on how relevant it is to the final drawing, dude. If the knowledge of anatomy is in your visual library, you don't need to peddle it out when it's not going to affect anything in the final product.

I may get flak for this, but I think Hampton is just a worse Steve Huston (Hampton was his student for some time iirc).

Hampton is good for understanding anatomical placement, certainly, but when compared to the more simple technique Huston advocates for (similar to Vilppu's technique), I think there is no contest.

Pic related, and I don't want to strawman Hampton, but this is the only painting of his I could find.

As someone that owns that device's precursor the 12WX I can comfortably say that it doesn't make sense at all. It's a smaller drawing surface than an Intuos Large on a smaller screen than you're likely using now, for way more money. If you're getting a Cintiq you go big or you go home.

So should one study after teacher he prefer or should you study all of them?
28 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>2730747
No single teacher can cover everything perfectly, so it's best to combine several. Which ones you combine is a bit of personal preference and will depend upon what you wish to learn.
>>
>>2730747

..and if one should study after more teachers, should he study them at the same time or firstly finish studies of one teacher and then move on other teacher?

What are those unwriten "rules of proper approaching to art fundamental materials"?

Bebause i, like a lot of you have 30+ books on anatomy, perspective, composition from more than 10 different teachers (most popular Bammes, Hoghart, Vilppu, Bridgman,..)
>>
>>2730749

Well its not that much in what i wish to learn than what we have to learn (all anatomy, perspective, forms, light and color, composition, storytelling..) in order to have proper skill set to apply it to our work.

I for example preffer Bridgman over Loomis but i assume i should study Loomis too?
