so this piece is pretty impressionist, but manages to get more depth than i've ever seen from similar works in the style. what's been done differently here? is it just the strong values?

Strong values in combination with a solid execution of perspective helps create the 4 different distances of each mass (front, middle rocks, slightly more far away rocks, ocean)

a bunch of particular factors I think

you've got a small block of light (hat) in front of a large and distant volume of dark (cliff sides) in front of a much larger and much farther volume of light (sea)

i like the composition, it seems calm and subdued but if you squint the values are arranged fairly dramatically.

I've been self-studying for a while now, but I feel like I'm not progressing as fast and as effectively as I could be... I'm drawing on average 5 hours a day, alternating between different teaching aids.

Would going to a (good) school be the best choice, with their focused classes? Is it worth the money? What about IRL vs. online?

Fuck, I just want to make sure I'm using my time effectively.

We always feel like we're not progressing as fast as we want to be. It's just a dream, anon. It's not real. That speed was never real. This is the fastest you can go. Just keep at it and you'll succeed many years down the line. Life has limits and we'll all hit them. It's inevitable.
>>
>>2722211
Art school is just structured competition and potential connections.

Unless you want to be a classically trained painter, you're better off saving your money and studying yourself.

A good tip from a good friend; If you find yourself lacking the discipline for artistic practices, instead focus on learning self-disciplinary skills to build a base.

>Didn't know whether to put this in /co/ or /lit/
So you put it on /ic/?
>>
>>2722057
You should ask this on /lit/ since your question is primarily about humor, then once you have a good idea, or at least feel like you do, you should go to /co/ and request comics or webcomics that do comedy well. Study them, learn how they manage to use both writing and drawings to convey their set-ups and punchlines, if you're new to comics I would recommend reading Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art", it doesn't focus primarily on humor in comics but it is a good read...

How old are you? I feel like after 25 you have a pretty clear idea what is funny without being base about it. Dont worry about drawing quality, if your writing is good you might even use the bad quality as a tool. I mean, look at harvey pekar.

Hey /ic/, how is your practice method/routine? I can't seem to find the perfect blend between getting better fast and personal satisfaction (so please, refrain to recommend stuff like "draw 2500 heads, then 5000 torsos"), sketches and finished pieces, and so on...

There's no magic answer to this because it depends on your goals and how you learn best. You'll have to find the balance yourself for what proportion of studying vs creative work you do. I've known of people who need to do tons of studies or else they don't improve, and I've known people who only paint from their head and never do studies but improve a lot because they are very analytical and grind on theory.

You can also try to blend the two, so bring in creative elements to studies....

My routine needs a lot of work and I'm sort of bad at applying it, but I generally like to work in terms of monthly goals. It's long enough to really retain something but short enough that it doesn't get too boring.

Basically I'll set a monthly goal that's relatively broad but based around something I'm bad at, like "Perspective" or "Composition" or "Faces". Then I'll try and work that into my practice for that month in more specific exercises. Not that I need to do it exclusively, I generally aim for something...

Start by taking inventory. Work out how much time you have free to practice in/ how much time your energy will let you practice. Then make a list of all the things you want to practice and rank them in order of what is most important to you. Then set up a routine, it can a one day or multiple day plan. Put the things most important to you first so they will definitely get done, I put creating art as the first thing since there is no point gitting gud if you aren't going to use your skills to make some art. Put...

This involves me looking like a victim, I plan to injure myself to a certain degree to appear as horrifying to a passerby as possible. I would like to know, is there an easy way to give yourself highly visible bruises? I m not worried about the pain it can cause, I have sufficiently trained myself to withstand pain.

from a PURELY artistic point of view, do you prefer capitalist or communist-styled propaganda?

no politics please.

Well, you can't forget that there wan't just capitalism and communism as their only differences. so to narrow down those as the only influence is wrong to do. From what I understand the USSR were mainly atheistic and US had more Christians at the time. If you think about it, the capitalist propaganda looks to be more family centered. I'm sure there are more influences than what I just names.

I'd say drawing is more important, but it doesn't hurt to practice rendering too. Rendering can help teach you form/light/colour/values/etc. Just do your drawing practice then try rendering it, you can get the best of both worlds.

Still, if I had to pick between being skilled at drawing and being skilled at rendering I'd pick drawing. Don't fall into the trap I did where I did tons of photostudies and got pretty competent at rendering but could hardly draw worth shit.

Anatomical bicep/tricep issues, no lats flat metal plating, overall unexciting design and presentation.

I'd advise keeping up the figure studios and reading, idk, some fucking book on character design. I like Matessi's Force but unless you know how to apply the concepts in a naturalistic way you'll probably discard it as cartoonist shit.

2. Don't make your own thread

3. Don't draw anime until you're at least semi-competent with your fundamentals. You're not learning anything by copying someone else's drawing, not at that level.
